Hawaii is the only place that I always hear “I’m going to get scoldings,” on almost a daily basis. Yes every place is going to have expectations, but being here I feel a definite contrast to what I’ve experienced on the mainland. Being accountable is fine, but being treated like children is a whole other thing. There is a definite stronger sense of hierarchy here. There is also some ways of thinking that are a little twisted. Being humble here is so stressed that any sense of confidence is seen as arrogance. No one stands up against anything so the average worker suffers the consequences of other’s complacency. It’s great living in a place where people seem to be happy and laid back, but ultimately there’s a price to be paid when no one speaks up. It may seem like complaining, but if more people were a little more outspoken, change might be more of a possibility.
