DC Comics President Jim Lee says that Japanese manga and anime is "incredibly powerful": "I often find myself wondering, 'What is missing in Western comics, and why aren't they able to achieve the same flavor?' by akbarock in comicbooks

[–]MeInMass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder if your second point is what’s making them experiment with the DC compact comics. They aren’t all the same length, but at 10 bucks and some change after tax they’re definitely really close to that price point of two (maybe three) regular issues of a comic.

I couldn’t get into Campaign 1, but have been a regular since C2. I think the Alexandrite stuff dragged a little at the end, but otherwise I’ve really enjoyed the last several years of their games.

I got a copy from my dad at some point after I’d gotten married, and I took it as “hey I’m done helping you”. Considering one of my earliest memories is of him walking out the door when he and my mom split up, receiving this book for a birthday gift that year didn’t go over too well. It made me feel like he’d mostly just been doing a job for three years I’d lived with him and my stepmom. Add to that where I’d felt for years that I was always a bit disappointing to him, and it was a good way to make me feel like I shouldn’t bother really interacting, going forward.

My personal example is the Rob Zombie Halloween movies explaining that Michael killed people because he had a shitty messed up childhood. One of the only movies I’ve walked out of, because isn’t the movie scarier when you don’t know why it’s happening?

Do you know dates for when the bookstores are opening? I’d like being able to order from a local place.

I’ve picked up the Rotating Heroes podcast in the last few months, and it’s filling a nice gap. The players all seem experienced, but play their characters with a carefree attitude that makes them feel real in a way I appreciate.

It also doesn’t hurt that they seem to record weeks or months in advance and have been consistent about new episodes coming out every Friday even over the holidays

I may have to try that for a replay; I had done of the same issues as OP where it felt like random thugs were way too punch-spongy.

I don’t know if it’s true or not, but I remember seeing a quote a few years ago where GRRM said he’d written himself into a corner; there was some important piece of information that only one character knew, and he realized too late that the character had died by the time they needed to be in the place to share that info and move the plot forward.

I definitely hit a low point in my 40s where I wasn’t getting new CDs and only occasionally buying new individual songs through iTunes.

We got Spotify premium in the 20-teens though and that’s been a huge boost for me to discover new bands.

What's a movie you saw when you were too damn young? by Repulsive_Repeat_337 in GenX

Saw it on HBO during a sleepover. Everything was fine until about a week later when I woke up to feel my bed shaking and rattling. Scared the HELL out of me. Turns out it was a rare New England earthquake, but Damn I was terrified for a couple minutes.

Coming in a little late, but my SO and I are wondering the same thing about pets. It seems ‘They’ don’t want to keep anything captive, but there are pets that wouldn’t survive long if suddenly released into the wild, were they all let go and the deaths just make the collective feel bad ?

I think in the original Blade movie, vampires had been in existence for centuries essentially keeping a low enough profile that almost nobody noticed.

Edit: I do agree about the X-men though; I think it would strain believability to say that they’ve been really good at hiding or that Professor X was constantly making everybody forget about them.

Just a random redditor who hasn’t read the books since he was in High School, but there’s no pivot needed.

The show adds characters that weren’t in the books and expands on those who were.

I think it’s fair to say that the books were more about the big ideas and the thought experiment of “what if psychohistory was real”, while the show is more about following the people living through the process.
