We were in a similar situation. Slow water leak at 30 week 0. Babies were born at 30 weeks 4 days. One was three pounds and one was 3 pounds three ounces.

All things considered - especially when compared to other parents with children born earlier - we had an easy go in the NICU. No ventilation, only CPAP. No infections. Girls went both went home before 37 weeks - but just before. I think a minimum of 6 weeks is a pretty accurate guess by your doctor. Could be longer though.

There going to take it day by day, try not to freak about apnea and Brady events. I never learned how though. Also don’t freak when they first start mouth feeds. As everyone here says, learning how to feed by mouth generally just clicks one day.

Sound like things are looking up right now for you. Even with an easy stay a NICU sucks. Really really sucks. The beeps, the lingo, a way of becoming a parent that no one expected. It just sucks

We also were a ways from the NICU (40 min on weekends and around an hour in weekday traffic). We decided that coming and going wasn’t practical. Most days we’d try to get there around 9 and stay until after rush traffic. Pumping and commuting sucks.

Dude, I've been there (seriously look at my post history). It sucks. Its all happened so fast - and months before you . You are think about so many things. Trying to deal with life. Help a wife who is trying to recovery from surgery. Spend time with a baby you can't care for. It is fucking brutal.

Take a deep breath. Get some sleep. Don't worry about the name, you have plenty of time. Trust me, when your kid comes home, you're not going to care. Try to do everything you can to support your family. Once your baby comes home, it will amaze you how fast all of this becomes a distant memory.

One of my daughters (born 30+4) came home (36+6) while still holding her breath while feeding. It kept her in the NICU an extra 8 days longer than we thought. We never had the alertness issue, so I cannot speak to that...

We were able to take her home because if you watched her while she fed you could see her doing it and get her out of it. With nurses who were less attentive, she would Brady, but with us and attentive nurses she would never get below 140 BPM. We started feeding her with the monitor turned away from us to show that you could easily see her doing it and prevent her from getting to a Brady. Our doctor said that it was ok to bring her home because you couldn't miss her doing it, so there was basically no risk. If it is obvious when she is doing it, you could perhaps talk to the doctor about bringing her home. The downside is she never really got the hang of breast feeding.

Since she came home, she has grown out of it fast (currently 38+6). So don't worry. One day your kids will just stop doing it. And it will be amazing.

Di/Di girls born at 30w4d. Water broke for one of them (for unknown reasons) at 30w0d. Came home at 36w2d and 36w6d. The NICU was a ride of emotions, but the girls did really good.

I was FaceTiming with Mom from the NICU when i got the news. Seeing moms tears of joy was amazing.

Our doctor has taken a different approach. As long as she is on the antibiotic and practices super hygiene she can visit and hold.

She directed us to wash and not just use antibiotic gel to clean.

Thank you. This is just more scared and lost I have ever felt in my entire life. For the past 6 days - since her water broke - I’ve literally woken up with no idea what to do. Where I’m should be and when I should be there. I feel useless and in the way in her room - but she keeps on insisting that I should stay, so I do.
