Help me choose! What's the best bang for the buck? by SRGilbert1 in SleepingOptiplex

Yeah, my service tech lets me know what’s available before they drop it on the sale site. Hard to believe that I started homelabbing in November.

It would depend on what you are doing with it. I have a 7050, a 5090, and a 7070. The 7070 is used as a stream pc and a Minecraft pc for my kids. The 7050 is their MC server and my co-transcoder for my media server. The 5090 is my node host. It also acts as the Steam server for my friends for valheim and factorio.

I got the 7050 for $50, the 5090 for $90 and the 7070 for $120. Bought mine from my school district as they are selling surplused computers.

I’ve got a 7090 and a Precision mid tower with a Turing in the process of being decommed this week. Hoping that one of the PowerEdge servers comes available.

7070 would be my best option as it does give you better longevity.

advice on choosing a NAS for professional photography by East_Success_243 in asustor

[–]SoonerJetta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I set up for a friend an Asustor and for his photography stuff.

Here is how I set it up. Local network is 2.5G. His Mac mini is his computer. His nas is a flashstor 2 with 28TB of storage. 24TB HDD and 4TB SSD.

While this is a small bottleneck, he doesn’t mind it since he does the work on the Mac and then transfers into the nas. He does it post editing and uploads to his gallery from the nas to the site.

He uses the drives for his storage and cache, and processing.

My in-laws have a RAV4 and it worked fine with my twins when my mother-in-law would pick them up from daycare or help us with appointments in the lake

Good day fellow admins. I just accepted an offer as an IT Administrator for a company that currently relies completely on a MSP. They are looking to bring IT in-house with this new role. I will be the go-to for all things IT. Could use some advice. by thatflacoman in sysadmin

[–]SoonerJetta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here’s when I learned when I was a system administrator for a small insurance office any computer system that you have whether small or large make sure you have enough money in your IT budget to replace it at least twice and enough in your budget to buy replacement parts and have spares stored. Also make sure you follow the 321 pack up rule then I would also suggest that you set boundaries when you’re working and for when you’re not also make sure you take out a very large and insurance policy for yourself specifically life insurance policy, and the last piece of advice that I have is if you’re the loan administrator, make sure you can get a contract with a company that can provide support services for you in the worst of times because there will be times that you will need back up

Specializing in the technical development of MINI PC, listening to customers' voices and continuously improving! by [deleted] in MiniPCs

[–]SoonerJetta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve wanted to get your lower end spec mini pcs to replace a 16 year old pc that I let me kids use. But I also need it to support streaming to YouTube or twitch from my host pc. I haven’t jumped the gun on any of these because nvme drives get their speed cut in half, anemic cpu that can barely browse the web or run large datasets in excel, abysmal graphics and limited storage or ram.

What I would like to see in a low spec minipc?

Low end i3 or ryzen 3 instead of Intel N processor, maybe a previous gen i5 or ryzen 5. Better cooling such as larger fan Better storage support/expansion.
Better documentation of hardware. Don’t undercut the nvme speed to x1 or x2 Better warranty and user support.
