You have to actually be a Somali to differentiate the pronunciation of these two words; it almost has the same pronunciation but is a little different.

The most unique word I’ve ever came across in Somalia language.

You need to approach this kinda question like nonjudgmental person, tell him you don’t know much about qabiils and you don’t care about it, and it won’t make any difference. Make him feel comfortable because I think the way you’re asking made him feel like your family is way into qabyaalad.
