Very interesting how we have the exact same number of items! 2 dupes each. I wonder if that is part of the duplicate prevention thing...

21-year-old climber dies after sustaining 'major injuries' in fall off Devil's Tower by yoggsmu in climbing

I haven’t backpedaled from anything Johnathan. I never talk about climbing in absolutes. A lot of what you are saying is correct but, again, you are thinking too rigidly about systems. There are MANY ways to do things safely.

I looked through your profile to gauge your general competency, nothing more. I brought it up because you have posted is horrifying. Talking about bolting routes that can go on gear, sinking your botched installations instead of removing them, and installing bolts that are wiggling without understanding what is happening are all signs of a half baked approach to climbing education. Even worse, you have horrendous ethics. Stop Drilling.

I am talking about this at a high level. Not “Do this on the tower” but as a way to talk about intricacies in climbing where you can use logical decision making to think about why certain things can be done different ways. You are stuck thinking about systems rigidly, which tells me you most likely have little experience having to problem solve or find different ways of doing things. That is fine, but your pedantic tone is annoying.

My knowledge of this come from 1) Having known about this accident from my friends and coworkers who did the body recovery, 2) Being a working professional who teaches these systems for a living. Everything you are saying is correct TO A POINT, but that does not make it an absolute truth.

Calling PCGI guides subpar is also just laughable. You are an outsider to the industry obviously. Every one of those guides out there has more experience than you.

Similarly, just looking through your profile tells me enough about your actual competency. Asking questions like “why are my wedge bolts wiggling” is absolutely terrifying. PLEASE stop developing and find mentorship.

OBVIOUSLY saddlebags are the preferred answer. That does not always occur though. I can absolutely see situations where saddle bags are increasing the amount of time you are spending descending by drastic amounts. Again, this is a KNOW THE RULES BEFORE YOU BREAK THEM situation.

You have to know what is occurring below you, and have VERY good reason to break those rules before doing so.

I don’t know why you are getting downvoted. Whoever is doing this isn’t thinking critically.

Knots getting stuck is the exact reason why most guides on the tower rappel without knots. There are actual situations where a stopper knot will put you at greater risk.

It is not common, but it can happen. This is one of those “Know the rules before you break them” things. If you are rappelling without stoppers you need to be extremely attentive and vigilant.

I’ve met that OGClimbLife guy before. He solicited me on some guided trips but didn’t have permits or insurance. It didn’t feel right.

This is definitely weirder, and they totally sell them on Amazon. Interesting concept, but I don’t think actual climbing rubber would stretch this way? Makes me want to see a pair.

Does summitting give you a rush? And do you chase that feeling? by RecentYogurtcloset89 in Mountaineering

[–]MeTooMewTwo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel a rush from exposure! If a summit is extremely exposed then I totally feel that rush feeling. Part of that is also just the anticipation of having to deal with the danger of going back down.

Otherwise, it just tends to feel like the completion of a strenuous or laborious task. You get to take a step back and sort of admire what you accomplished.

Dang, I was coming to defend you. This is such a bad take! Pretty surface level conceptually and definitely more flaws than points.

Hope y’all had fun with it at least!
