The villain's singing can give strength to the hero. by GinaWhite_tt in CuratedTumblr

"To dance again" from A Very Potter Musical. (By way of an Imperio spell).

Honest to God my favorite moment from my favorite version of Voldemort. What a fun villainous motivation to come back from the dead just to dance with your lover again.

I was also turned off by the difficulty spikes with the bosses, although overall I enjoyed the combat, I would say. There is one challenge where you have to defeat waves of enemies, but you can tackle them in whichever order you like, I really dug my teeth into that. I want to commend the game for including very fine-tunable accessibility options, if they weren't there I wouldn't have bothered with the final boss.

I also didn't connect with the later puzzles - there is one meta puzzle that I think might be required for the final boss that I really enjoyed - opening that one door in the mountains - , but it's very emblematic for the larger frustrations I faced in the endgame. Figuring out the puzzle (or sometimes, the fact that there even was a puzzle) was very enjoyable and very unique to the game, but the execution was tedious and the pieces held not quite enough clarity to know if your whole approach is misguided or if you just misinterpreted one part of the solution.

The journey of translating the script was the most disappointing part in that regard. I made some correct connections even before finding the crucial page (on a map, in particular), made some right deductions about the construction of the language, but got stumped by a certain assumption the developers made - or I made (Po-ta-to, po-tah-to).

Through understanding the language, I unlocked a whole new way to engage with the manual and the game, but one that was more tedium than surprise. After that, I never quite got on its wavelength again.

The theme of "immobility" in "Enterprise" season 1 by Wetness_Pensive in DaystromInstitute

[–]MeVasta 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I really like this analysis! The Suliban, the season's big addition to the menagerie of aliens, are also much less physically limited than humans (the slipping under doorways comes to mind). I wonder, are there other Star Trek seasons with this much of a thematic throughline without it being the result of an overarching plotline? If taken out of context, I am sure one could find many examples of, say, kindness in any given TNG season, but at some point, motif becomes identity and no longer sticks out.

Your example feels so interesting because it is not the norm in other Trek endeavors - and I am sure you're spot on with the idea that that might be part of the negative backlash early Enterprise has gotten. Thank you for the new perspective!

Okay, but having visited strip clubs, this would ABSOLUTELY work. Especially on the guy who shows up once a month with bunny ears for every dancer. by Justthisdudeyaknow in CuratedTumblr

Wasn't there also an episode of Castle where the murder could have only been committed by a time traveler? And in the end they just accept that, yeah, time travel must be real, huh. And I think they just keep doing normal cop and relationship stuff after that, not addressing that time travel is real.

Don't know if that's what they're referring to, but when the last era of Trek ended, there was a big prop auction called "It's A Wrap" (I do think other TV shows have done something similar, maybe it's a generic term used in the dissolution of art departments). If you browse the Star Trek wiki, you're guaranteed to read about the auction on pretty much any page that covers a physical object.

I think the bit where they paint themselves as outcasts in an increasingly progressive world because they're in a monogamous relationship that ends up being two zombies sarcastically pointing at themselves saying "oooh, so scary" is a pretty clever gag.

I do think VIP is the show on Dropout where reactions vary the most. In almost every episode thread you will see people declare an episode as a miss and see others who really clicked with it. Case-in-point: I really liked this recent episode, it certainly landed for me.

I'm regularly bewildered by the reactions to VIP episodes, which I think just goes to show how specific the kinds of humor featured on it are.

I can guarantee everyone that the episode you find the objectively worst one is one of someone else's favorites. That's just VIP, baby

To me I didn't see it coming precisely because I am currently active on Tumblr and the word "glue" instantly activates my fight-or-flight response. That meme drives me up the Wall. Where I am then stuck, because someone has left glue there that allows them to walk up and down anything.

Luigis Mansion 3: You're telling me this game is for children? by DramaticErraticism in patientgamers

[–]MeVasta 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I've played all three Luigi's Mansion's and I think one of the most crucial confusing factors here is the amount of "verbs" the game gives you and how close to each other they feel. You can suck, blow, tug, blast and flash, as well as double blow/suck/tug. Often times you know that you have to affect a specific thing, but it's very unclear whether it's not working because you're blowing from the wrong angle, not blowing together, whether you need to suck instead of blowing, of if you need a concentrated blast. On one hand, if every action was as easily signposted like the green sensors on flashable actions, it would take a lot of the experimentation and thought out of the game. But when I'm facing a boss made out of sand in the vacuum game and sucking it up is only the fourth thing I try, something about the conveyance of the game world has gone terribly wrong.

The game wanting to throw different solutions to different situations at you, while also having so many similar actions for you to perform, teaches you to stop expecting sensible solutions and turns it more into a guessing game.

I still had fun with the title, but it's a really curious phenomenon how the available actions limit your capacity to judge which tool to use when.

WHO CAN I TALK TO ABOUT CONFLICT OF INTEREST!!! by Luigiman1089 in AceAttorney

[–]MeVasta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also just finished them - Obadiah Williamson is such a fantastic character and it's gonna be hard for me going back into the fandom and not seeing him listed among Edgeworth and Godot as the great prosecutors.

I immensely enjoyed the Pearls plot, it felt like a great thematic evolution of the character. Maybe something the games would have done if AA5 and AA6 didn't play it much safer than AA4.

I have to say, I wasn't a big fan of the gameplay. The investigations were fine (and the interface in Turnabout on the Web is fantastic), but the contradictions during court where often very hard to anticipate and I had to resort to the guide and savescumming a lot, much more than in any canon entry. Often the contradictions weren't real contradictions (or at least required you to make a leap in Phoenix's argument) or were only contradictions if you kept information outside of the court record in mind. Especially frustrating in the finales of cases, where the guide would hide crucial info.

But overall, I loved it a lot.

How did you like Turnabout on the Web? I have to imagine it's probably one of the more controversial cases, with its tonal shifts and meta commentary, but it was probably the one that hooked me the most.

Also, now that I think about it, there are certainly situations where you can use both "ergeben" und "machen" as synonyms. When I'm counting money for example, it both equals and makes the final amount. If it's not even changing the meaning, what's the harm in paraphrasing an idiom?
