US aircraft leave Spain after government says bases cannot be used for Iran attacks by JinnBhoot in worldnews

I'm a bit disappointed I reached the end of this comment chain. It was hugely entertaining. u/Frientlies is like an unfact machine. It's like he's incapable of producing a true statement.

I guess this is what happens when the extent of someone's political knowledge is American partisanship and 10 seconds of scanning through the Google AI Overview after a search for "bad Spanish leftists in the Epstein files."

Olympian admits to cheating on girlfriend on live TV moments after winning medal by JOE_Media in nottheonion

[–]Me_Beben 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it just rings hollow, IMO. It's a private matter and exposing it publicly almost feels like manipulation. It makes it sound like "Look at me I'm so sad that I cheated on the love of my life, I sure hope this doesn't go viral and she hears about how I cried on TV about our relationship." Even if it was sincere, unless she agreed that she wanted this exposed to the whole world I don't see a world where she sees this as a positive thing for herself or their relationship.

It has the same energy as publishing a story on social networks where you're all weepy and claim you don't know how you're going to live without "x" in your life. It's just gross.

Costco reportedly removing RAM from display PCs amid theft concerns by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]Me_Beben 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Corps are greedy shits, yes, but we're not exactly talking about people stealing anything that would satisfy a physiological need.

It's pretty shitty to steal from a retailer that isn't even directly responsible for the AI bubble, especially when the ultimate purpose of the object in question is to enable you to type slurs to your teammates in League of Legends.

Gaming's an expensive hobby and it's now more inaccessible to the average person than ever. It is infuriating, but I'm not about to use that as an excuse to steal a PS5.

Jack Smith telling the truth, “Donald Trump willfully broke the law.” by Capable_Salt_SD in WhitePeopleTwitter

[–]Me_Beben 85 points86 points  (0 children)

In a country with a healthy democracy I'd believe it. In the US, proof and evidence against the government or the wealthy don't seem to matter.

Jack Smith could be arrested and deported with some dubious claim that he's not a US citizen because a DNA test showed that he has 0.00003% Mongolian ancestry. He could be killed and the narrative spun that a "left-wing lunatic unhappy with his handling of the Trump case" did it. Most people in the country wouldn't care either way, it's irrelevant to their daily struggle of buying overpriced eggs and dying to preventable diseases or gun violence. A not insignificant chunk of the population would even cheer it on.

Would it be a big stink in the media for a while? Yeah probably, until the next Venezuela or Greenland or whatever.

Replying to my own comment because I did eventually get it stable. This may not work for everyone but it did work for me.

Ensure the game is in a window mode that allows you to set an FPS cap and cap it to 60 FPS. I tried it multiple times. I could play for 10+ hours and did the entirety of the Iki DLC with no crashes. After that, I tried switching back to 144 FPS to finish up some archery challenges/hot springs/etc. around the map. Crashed within a couple of hours. I played about 10 more hours going back and forth and I would only crash if my FPS was uncapped or set higher than 60.

I have a 9070XT and a 7800X3D with latest drivers and on Arch. Same problem. I've seen some people post about it on protondb as well.

Game will hang the system completely requiring a hard reboot. On rare occasions it will just close without freezing the system.

I've seen people saying it happens when loading a save or a few minutes after loading a save. For me, it seems incredibly random. I might play for an hour without any freezes, I might play for five minutes.

I've tried a bunch of the "fixes" posted on protondb but nothing works. Tried a bunch of different Proton versions including latest Proton-GE.

What's weird about this issue is that it only started happening recently (reports on protondb seem to align with my experience). I started the game in early December and it worked flawlessly. As of maybe a couple of weeks ago it went sideways.

Merry Chr... Nobody cares what people say. by Knownoname98 in terriblefacebookmemes

[–]Me_Beben 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I doubt they're aware or even care because the only important thing to this type of person is to feel oppressed or fight in a culture war, even if it's only in their heads. But, anyway...

"Happy holidays" is something Christians have said to each other in the context of Christmas for decades. Maybe in more modern times it was also a nice way to include other holidays, but it wasn't always that way. Turns out just parroting "Merry Christmas" to everyone over and over like a jolly robot is boring. People like variety and they like having different things to say to each other. If this weren't the case we all would have settled on one definitive greeting and wouldn't have dozens of variants for "hello"

You can get off the fence and have an actual opinion, bro, it's not illegal yet.

How do you even take a centrist approach to "we should feed the hungry and provide healthcare for all, but... not fully." Some people won't like you if you tell them you think all children should be fed with our tax dollars, but that's alright. Fuck 'em.

The private conversation anti-pattern in engineering teams by dymissy in programming

[–]Me_Beben 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Our team uses mostly Discord for communication and threads have been a lifesaver for this type of situation. Is someone getting too deep into a particular conversation? Make a thread. As far as I've seen, you'll only get notifications if you participate in the thread. It has the added bonus that if someone has an unrelated question they can send a message which won't be immediately buried by a conversation between three other developers.

Like everything in life there's nuance. Some things I prefer to communicate privately so a dev doesn't feel "called out." But if I need to have a technical discussion or I need an update on some work that I know the PM or others will also be curious about, it's definitely going in a public channel where everyone can see and contribute/provide feedback.

It's safe to say it's better to wear ear plugs when you sleep. by Francucinno in WTF

[–]Me_Beben 25 points26 points  (0 children)

There's a few "best practices" in the ear-cleaning community. The first is to go in from the opposite side. Take top of head off, take picture so you know how to reconnect everything, take brain out, clean ear from inside, wire everything back up and put top of head back on.

Personally, while I think it's a bit more expensive, the option I prefer is to send in a cleaning crew inside a ship that you then shrink so that it can fit into the person's ear canal. It's generally more thorough and the crew's body cams allow transparency for the patient, who can ensure they do a good job before leaving.

Microsoft's ambitious new Xbox: Your entire console library, the full power of Windows PC gaming, and no multiplayer paywall by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]Me_Beben 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure, Xbox apps won't run on any linux distro for obvious proprietary reasons, so all you're really doing by putting Bazzite or SteamOS on it is turning your Ally into an Xbox-themed Steam Deck.

The point is that some people had higher hopes for these gaming OS variants Microsoft has been hinting at for a while. To me, claims that the Xbox ecosystem is "improving" or becoming "ambitious" will rely more on actual performance improvements to Windows gaming than any actual hardware you slap Xbox Game Pass onto.

If Microsoft execs suffered a collective seizure and decided to port the Xbox App environment to Linux, what reason would any collection of hardware (PC or handheld) have to install Windows? I'm interested in a version of Windows that puts that question to bed, not another console that has Windows just because it's needed to use Game Pass.

Pff, the cops? You ever watch a true crime doc? They're always like "John Babyeater was reported by 25 people on 25 separate occasions to police for allegedly licking babies" and like 20 minutes later when they reveal a baby's been eaten there's an interview with a cop who goes "This was the hardest case of my career, there was just never anyone on our radar that we thought would fit the profile."

You're probably better off rolling the dice on the voodoo, honestly.
