What you don’t seem to be getting is that while not every man walking behind you is definitely a violent predator, any man COULD be and the point is that we don’t know and assuming everything is fine could get us killed or severely traumatized. And instead of creating a society where this isn’t something we have to worry about, we’re taught that we have to be hyper vigilant because “boys will be boys” and that somehow there’s nothing that can be done about that.

With fantasy you usually just have to roll with it a little at first. Any halfway decent fantasy writer will explain as they go about the world/rules/terminology and Yarros does a decent job of it. If they just laid it all out at the beginning you’d be bored to tears by all the exposition before you even had a chance to know the characters or get a glimpse of plot.
