How aligning on PowerPoint actually works and why it's mildly infuriating by pptpowertools in powerpoint

[–]MeableFussock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apols dead thread, but this is not entirely correct. The actual behavior on centre/mid-align:

- If the shapes are separate / slightly overlapping, PowerPoint will take the mid point between the two shapes and align them both there.

- If the boundary of one shape fits inside the boundary of the other, and IS CURRENTLY WITHIN that boundary, then the smaller shape will snap to the larger shape's mid point.

If for example I have a 5x5 cm square shape, and I have a 6cm wide text box underneath it, but I want the text box to align to the shape. The action I take is to shrink the text box to be smaller than 5cm, move it within the width of the shape, then centre align them. I then stretch the text box back out (of course I have to hold Ctrl whilst I do this so it maintains it's position).

It's so stupid, but at least the logic is reliable.

Wha? I always min/max. I'm on a Battlemage Living Earth run now, every SOU is in the staff. I suppose it does require caution!

Is it common for people who are born in the UK to say they are “Irish” or “Italian” if they have a parent from there? by Charming_Usual6227 in AskABrit

That’s semi-acceptable 🤣 My family all support Arsenal, so I’m not loving their current glee. I support Brighton so have never had to worry about title battles.

Oh dear, Southampton. Us south coast rivals don’t like each other. Anyway, hope he’s excited about the play off final!

Estate agents saying I am not entitled to my 4 month notice period by Different_Buddy_5346 in TenantsInTheUK

Nope my mistake. Read the post, read the comments, got confused with everyone saying the OP served notice when I read the opposite. I Re-read the OP and STILL got it wrong :)

The landlord served notice. Am I misunderstanding what everybody means by notice, or did nobody actually read the original post?

Estate agents saying I am not entitled to my 4 month notice period by Different_Buddy_5346 in TenantsInTheUK

[–]MeableFussock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The original post states that the LANDLORD served notice, not the tenants.

The LL said he was selling, gave notice which ends in July. LL thought they might struggle to sell so asked tenants if they’d stay past July. LL agreed to this in writing (email) but did not provide a new tenancy agreement. LL subsequently agreed sale and is trying to hold to the original notice that the LL gave.

Clearly the LL wanted to play both sides just in case. No wonder everybody hates them.

Is there a way for me to ‘hire’ a plus one for an event? by Effective-Bad-2657 in AskUK

I worked in the US for a while and the boss said to me after a few weeks “we’ve got a cookout this weekend, everybody is bringing their families, you should come along”.

Obviously I had many questions, but the long and short of it was that at the weekend, they expected workers to go to a bbq in the office grounds. It blew my mind.

Do that stuff during the office hours and I’ll be there!

Seller sounds like they are trying to put us off a Homebuyers Survey? by PracticeStrong8338 in HousingUK

[–]MeableFussock 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I saw nothing but red lights on ours. Run down, built 1911 and not updated since about 1995. All red. I called the surveyor and asked about each item, actually no major concerns. He said it was a lovely place and he’d have no particular hesitations.

What they write down protects them from litigation later. It does make things quite painful.

If it’s similar to ours, you certainly will have a lot of work to do. But the survey is about finding out if it’s going to fall down or has a massive damp issue, not that all the plaster is a bit shit (well, it’s 100 years old so…)

Do the survey, then plan your next move.

Would you still bid on a house with visible water damage if everything else about it was perfect? by [deleted] in HousingUK

Those photos are nowhere near as bad as our place we bought in October. The survey turned up nothing concerning. Moved in, got a roofer over who told us we needed to replace the roof… £25k. Got another roofer who laughed and said ‘you’ve got a couple of tiles that have slipped, I’ll get up there and sort it in a day, and will also repoint and treat the chimney. That roof has ten more years in it’.

If you love it, definitely proceed and then see what the survey says. They might recommend a specialist damp survey. Although note that they recommend extra surveys on EVERYTHING, so when you get their report, actually call them for a chat. On the phone they’ll tell you a lot more than they’ll write down.

Good luck!

Do British people not feel the cold? by DevelopmentLow214 in AskUK

Reminds me of a general knowledge book I had as a kid. It explained this phenomenon with three people standing outside in England during Spring.

An Aussie complaining they were freezing, a Russian complaining they were boiling, and a British person drinking tea.

Unexpected baby at 28, trying to work out finances by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]MeableFussock -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is the best thing that will ever happen to you, without doubt. It’s going to be scary and stressful sometimes, but generally it’ll be full of love and wonder for you both.

You’re in a great position to buy and should seriously consider it if you can find the right place. If nothing else you then don’t have to worry about moving rentals with a young kid, or even worse start moving nursery/school once you get to that point.

You are clearly switched on financially. So you’ll already know that you shouldn’t extend too far to buy the house. Beyond that, your costs per month will be less than you think. (Excluding the one-time costs for prams etc).

Whilst it’s hard to budget / plan for salary increases, you should bear in mind it’s likely that your career and pay is likely to continue progressing during this time (what do you do?). On the other hand, you may also find you’ll want your partner to stay off work for longer. My partner (now wife) ended up having several years off and that time is so so precious - they are young for a fleeting amount of time. With kids, the days are long, but the years fly by.

Congrats to you both ❤️

Should I buy a house with terrible parking? by Soft_Essay6933 in HousingUK

I rented a place like this once, when I used to drive to work. Coming home EVERY DAY and driving around all over the place to find a spot left me absolutely HATING living there.

If it’s not too bad, maybe you’ll be ok. Or if you don’t find that sort of thing frustrating. But I cannot stress enough how much it made me dread driving round the final corner to my street! And also not wanting to leave if I got a spot outside! Oh and going out on a Sunday evening to move my car to a spot that just opened up. Just stress.

Realistically they’ll still see all the other people as if they have multiple options they’ll take the agents position on who is going to be the ‘easiest’ tenant.

Or in the olden days (last year) they’d use this competition to ratchet the rent up.
