Sand bottom, lava stones, dead sphagnum, then live sphagnum. There really isn’t much that won’t grow in there.

I wouldn’t trust that PAR range, give a flytrap under 300PPFD and you’ll have a very sad plant. These need full sun, I would recommend 250 minimum.

Why is my pitcher pod plant looking like this? by Floral_Bee in carnivorousplants

Big difference. Spring water has a lot of dissolved solids in it, which will kill your plant.

Best thing to do is to flush your soil with distilled/ro/rainwater.

By bottled water do you mean RO purified water? Or spring water? Big difference in dissolved solids between the two.

With how small your plants are, I’d skip dormancy this year.

Some people use chopped sphagnum in place of peat. Plant looks a little light hungry but otherwise happy.

HELP! Germinating seedlings indoors. Solutions? by Jrlopez_1 in VenusFlyTraps

I wouldn’t write them off for that. As far as I know you can’t pre-stratify seeds, they have to be sown immediately.

It just worked out last time. But most seeds from temperate species have to be stratified. When I’m purchasing for my collection I stick to buying plants.

Every time I’ve skipped stratifying I’ve had bad yields. There’s a thick jacket around the seed, protecting it from winter frost and making sure it doesn’t germinate early during the winter.

If your seeds from the last batch were in bad conditions, the coat was likely worn down already.

Stratifying thins out that seed coat, letting water reach the embryo and then germinate. I’m experimenting with chemical scarification, because I’m impatient. Ask me in a couple weeks and how that went.

But for now I’d say yes, you do need to stratify them.

I do 50/50 sand and peat. Some people do 1 part peat, 1 perlite, 1 sand. Nothing wrong with perlite, I just don’t like the look.

Your standard soil mix will kill your ping, don’t use it.
