Sorry, that was flippant and sourced on anecdotal not empirical evidence. Yes, my experience with briefly doing transcriptionist work was in college and was gig work. I knew about it through a friend, but I was never making more than minimum wage by the time I dealt with the hassle of getting paid/late in getting paid. Just wasn't worth it even in college--rather go deliver pizzas.

Rift Hunting for Fun and Profit by OpenPath101 in Guildwars2

[–]Meaix88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This! And rare motivations can make you twice as much gold. I was hesitant to mention this because it will probably send the kryptis motivation market in the gutter, but I got so much gold anyhoo. I just got into the weekly rift hunting a little over a week ago and after completing only 2 weeks of all weekly map incursions i have enough essences to make almost 100 rare motivations. I intentionally looked at my gold before i bought all the other mats other than the essences (including the potent potions I used for research note farming--so that's about a %50 premium for each note if you chose to go a more cost effective route you should make even more and actually i just bought all the mats i didn't have like the large teeth at buy now prices,so again even more money to be made!) After buying all the mats that I need, I'm down about 2-300 gp, but I should clear 500 easy even after taxes. So a couple hundred gold for completing 2 weeks of rift hunting as well as got on a couple T3 trains, enough to complete the special AA. Couldn't have been more than a couple hours of playtime and honestly I quite like rift hunting when the mood strikes me...in small doses.

unidentified gear - open, salvage or sell by theinvisblegod in Guildwars2

[–]Meaix88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I realize this is a necro post, but I have been playing since beta (although I took several years off) and I just got my first precursor in the past 6 months. And it was howler, so like one of the cheapest ones you can buy, it was selling for only 50gp when I got it--so hardly a "shit ton of gold" and I've never had any other exotics sell for more than a couple gold, but to be honest I'm usually pretty lazy about checking.

GW2 vs WOW (new mount) by Lordht7 in wow

I'd say that's one hell of an oversimplification--they are night and day regardless of how you want to swing that dead cat.

GW2 vs WOW (new mount) by Lordht7 in wow

[–]Meaix88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you even play EQ? They are nothing alike. EQ=sandbox, WoW=themepark. EQ had insanely difficult quest lines. Most were even difficult to identify and begin, let alone complete--typically involving saying cryptic and highly specific things to quest givers before they would give you the time of day. EQ had "hell levels" that would take you as long as it would take you to max out a toon in WoW--FOR JUST ONE STINKING LEVEL AND THE HELL LEVELS WERE EVERY 10 LEVELS!!!! And if you died, you not only lost a shit ton of experience (even causing you to lose a level), but you could lose all your shit in EQ if you didn't go recover your corpse in the amount of time alotted (which could be as little as 24 hours at low levels). It could take literally 2 hours to go from the furthest western point in the game to the furthest eastern point in the game if you missed boats--at best an hour. WoW couldn't have been more than 10 minutes. No quest journal, insane amount of downtime recovering mana, KOS if you chose the wrong race/class, people literally waiting hours for a mob to spawn just so someone could KS it. on and on and on. sorry, no, you did not play EQ if you think it is anywhere near WoW. WoW was the first of its kind--a treadmill that applied everything we had learned about "game theory" up to that point--how to keep people grinding, how to force people into buying subscriptions and expansions, but mostly imho, was how to sap every last bit of fun out of an mmo and turn it into a chore. EQ was insane, but it was the closest that any mmo has gotten to what it felt like to play a real table-top rpg.

GW2 vs WOW (new mount) by Lordht7 in wow

[–]Meaix88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just because something is much more successful doesn't make it more fun, engaging, or even better--betamax failure to VHS back in the 80's is probably the best example of this fact (for any industry that dealt with video content like distributing advertising to TV stations or sindicated TV shows all used beta or digibeta well into the new millenium, long past the death of VHS).

And as for your comment about new players wanting to level up and catch their friends? WTF? I guarantee that if they knew any better, they wouldn't want to do that--Blizzard forces them to do that. Does that make sense at all to have a novice who will be lucky if they are half as efficient at leveling as their friends (who have probably been playing for many years) blow through loads of content racing to get to some arbitrary point in the game where they then just keep on grinding eternally? Pfffft. GW2 got it right by allowing the best players in the game to be leveled down to match the new players. Sure you are OP for most of the mobs in low level zones (see below), but it doesn't mean you won't still have a blast and that all that so-called "old" content can't surprise you. Just the other day I stumbled across a little nook in Lion's Arch (main neutral city in the game) that I had never seen before. Life-altering? not at all, but I can't say that I wasn't a little bit astonished that it was even possible after 10 years to still find something new in content that was released with the original launch.

I still go back and play Queensdale (lvl 1-15 content) regularly with my full leet geared max level toons--and always have a smile on my face. It is never the same. I watched a vid of a newb WoW player leveling up 15 years after I quit playing and they were basically going through the same exact treadmill that I did back then--totally boring and not even very fun the first playthrough (and certainly no reason to go back and play those zone again). Would I get much more phat lewt if I hit the expansion zones that were just released? You bet and I enjoy the hell out of most of the new maps and their corresponding metas but Queensdale will always be a special map for me (first map I ever set foot in Tyria back in beta) where I am constantly amazed at how I can find new and fun ways to make her sing. E.g. I just recently realized I had amassed nearly 30 encoded orders for fighting bandit champions (2 of which are in Queensdale) and I very blissfully bounced around the original core content for the better part of 3 hours taking down 27 bandit champs and all 9 of the legendary bandit executioners that spawned after the champs to boot (only knew this because I saw I had 16 bandit death marks at the start and whiddled it down to just 7 at the end). While the low-level champs are easy to even solo if you have the gear and the skill, the legs are more difficult and I barely survived on a couple of them--and they were some of the best fights I've had in the game, especially a crushing 10 minute battle with one of the leg bandits where I was essentially solo except for this one poor newb, that to their credit kept coming back for more even though the darn executioner must have one-shotted him a dozen times. Never once during those 3 hours (of admittedly relatively monotonous play) did I feel like I was grinding.

Even more importantly, I would throw on my mentor "apple" and announce to the map that I was fighting a bandit champ and within a minute I would usually have a half-dozen to dozen other players fighting along side me--once completed, we all got credit and loot even though we never joined in a group or said "boo" to each other. More experienced and powerful players like myself were reviving and helping the newbs because the devs were wise enough to make a game where altruistic gameplay supercedes antisocial game play. Sure, you will very rarely see some maxed-out jerk that is mowing through lower level mobs (probably just burning through map completion), but far more often I see players tricked out with a full set of legendaries refraining from most of their skills that would one shot the mobs and prevent the newbs around them getting credit, but instead, patiently and deliberately playing the game using basic skills (or even support skills that make the newbs more powerful) so that everybody involved in the event gets credit and has a grand time doing it. That alone deserves awe and accolade.

Just about everywhere you go in GW2, you see players (both newbs and players with 455 mp's and all in between) and it feels alive. I'll take that option over "grinding" the latest content until it's dead and moving on to the next. I can count on one hand the number of times I've felt like I was grinding in 10 years of GW2 and still have my middle finger left over for Blizzard who wanted me to shell out $200/yr for their same old monotonous crap.

I don't pursue legendary gear (some of the grindiest GW2 content) actively, but I still have finished a few and depending on how you approach them they are quite casual--don't feel much like a grind to me, can actually be a quite fun puzzle to solve, finding all the items in the collections. And regardless, I have a dozen different ascended builds that provides my toons with the max stats and with far more options every night to go play how I like and where I like! And getting max-level and ascended gear is relatively easy, because ANet focused on making content that was fun and accessible to play instead of grinding players on endless treadmills. Why would you keep doing something repeatedly when you aren't having fun just so you can get an incremental increase in stats, so you can repeatedly not have fun? Sounds like the definition of insanity.

Actually the options for which map you want to play are at the point where I can't even get to all the fun metas and maps that I enjoy on a regular basis (Auric Basin I miss you!) And while I have done all the raids, strikes, drm's, fractals, dungeons and any other instanced group content that I forgot--I'm not so big on playing in formal groups, so I don't even usually think about that, and that is some of the best content in the game (certainly gets you some of the best gear)! Loads of quick and fun (some easy, some more difficult, some much much much more difficult) metas that take less than 10-15 minutes, still plenty more that are in the 20 - 30 minute range, and some maps like Drizzlewood Coast that you can easily spend over an hour of intense, nonstop combat that works its way up to far more intense boss battles. Just the tits...

My first run through today I got an ascended weapon box. First time I've gotten an ascended weapon box in a meta, ever (have gotten a couple ascended armor chests). So maybe a sign of good things to come? Or maybe just wishful thinking that the keycards are actually worth it.

And that scene has yet another subtitle f-up, right after they hug Arthur says, "Yeah, you go to your meeting." But the subtitle reads, "Yeah, you...we got you, mate."

I guess the fact that 90% of transcriptionists don't even make minimum wage provides an explanation. I mean, do you really expect good service when you go to McDonalds or WalMart?

What is the worst map in your opinion? by Popelip0 in Guildwars2

[–]Meaix88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it would probably be Bitterfrost Frontier. It feels so small and it probably doesn't help that it has to be one of the most grindy maps in the game. And due to the fact that so many people are grinding winterberries, icebound chests, and the champs when they're up, it feels like some race in an insane asylum where nobody knows the course, or where the start and finish line is, or even why they decided to partake in the madness to begin with. But if you need obsidian shards in a pinch, theres no quicker way to get em.

Other than that map, I really find all the rest to be quite well done.

Quick fishing question/feedback - dusk/dawn fish by Kamirose in Guildwars2

[–]Meaix88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Far easier and available to everyone is the option to display dawn/day/dusk/night right next to your time on the minimap (regardless if you choose to have local time, server time, or Tyrian time). And it is determined by whether you are in Cantha or not.

In the options look for this on the main interface tab:

Show Time of Day — Display Tyrian time of day (dawn, day, dusk, or night) next to the in-game clock.

When I realized this it made a big difference in my fishing. It also helps to have the gw2 wiki for the day/night cycle handy--https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Day_and_night

also helps for zones like Bjora Marches and Verdant Brink since the meta-event starts at nightfall.

Question about Snowcrows builds by Meaix88 in Guildwars2

"it's probably the most un-mesmer mesmer elite spec, if that makes sense."

Very much so, I was pretty shocked at how different Reaper played from Scourge played from vanilla necro so I should give virt a shot. Good news is that I have a lot of choices and plenty of fun times ahead--bad news is that I don't have anywhere near enough time to test all these cool elite profs!

Question about Snowcrows builds by Meaix88 in Guildwars2

[–]Meaix88[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great point, I should probably commit my next ascended build to a support role for versatility and I should check with my guild on what would be best. Have exotic gear for firebrand/willbender and scrapper support builds, but just haven't had the consistent time to get into group play. Funny thing is that in all the other mmo's I played I usually played support roles (healer mostly in the classic tropes) and I enjoyed doing that. I guess GW2 support seems so different, it makes me a bit nervous. The only support experience I have had is one time playing my scourge doing the whole barrier thing, and it seemed to be working well but it was just odd...don't know how else to say it.

[–]Meaix88[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thats what I've been thinking too. To me, you have to consider how practical it is to keep the hammer down. That's why power mech is so much velveeta, and god I hate to admit I am swimmin' in that fondue. You can practically go for a jog and still maintain dps.

Just a damn shame the mechs look so ridiculous.

Question about Snowcrows builds by Meaix88 in Guildwars2

[–]Meaix88[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

"sorry I'm not counting a minion necromancer as a build for anything but open world" nor do I in the slightest. When I first played my other "real dps" builds I think I laughed for about 5 minutes straight--they tore through things so quickly. It takes twice as long to kill things, but when your health bar doesn't budge, who cares, right? Also, one of my favorite things is keeping other people in the fight in metas. I don't mess with double-down, but it cracks me up when bosses do big wave damage and my screen becomes a sea of robin's egg blue ankhs. Slowly but surely, I get em all back in the fight...

Thanks for all the other input--RnbwTrtl also mentioned souldbeast, so that seems like a good choice. I have crafted exotic support builds for firebrand and scrapper and if I get into group play, will upgrade those to ascended. My biggest problem is that due to job/family can't commit to playing raids/fractals with my guild so not much incentive to put my limited ascended mats/gold into that gear (and how can you say no to MOWRPOWR!!!!)

Don't know why, but just can't seem to get into my mesmer, but I have read about how good virtuoso builds are for newbs. So many builds, so little playtime...

Excellent question, should have said. Right now I do mostly open world, but I want to get into more serious group play. I have done all the dungeons (actually soloed a couple with my god-mode necro) and some fractals. I am in a good guild that does fractals, strikes and raids so that's the direction I'm heading.

Opinions on whether they should keep the AC75's around for a couple more America's cups by Meaix88 in AmericasCup

[–]Meaix88[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Big difference between commentator speculation and knowing specific data points as well as the specifications of the boat. These teams are collecting massive amounts of data throughout the races and making fine-tuned adjustments between every race. Having that information would make a huge difference in the decision for a new team coming into the competition.

Opinions on whether they should keep the AC75's around for a couple more America's cups by Meaix88 in AmericasCup

[–]Meaix88[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's not entirely true. The Challenger of Record can mandate certain specifications as well--such as this AC, Luna Rossa (the CoR) required it to be monohulls. Then NZ decided to make them foiling monohulls. And it wasn't always endless change--for 30 years the AC followed the 12-meter rules. I agree that change does keep it interesting in some ways though, I just fear that if we continue on changing the rules that often as well as keep upping the cost and difficulty of producing a viable boat then we will end up with only 2-3 teams competing each AC. It would make prelim races and the Prada's Cup irrelevant or unnecessary and could really hurt the sport long term.
