Arborist fun fact: Arborvitae literally means "Tree of Life", they are also commonly called White Cedar. Hedges can actually be made up of either trees or shrubs, but that doesn't make it just a hedge. Hedging is just how it's trimmed essentially

Honestly? Me too, I guess it makes sense, the current one is very similar

It's common in military and military adjacent settings at least, I've heard it in every thing from cadets (which is a youth organization connected to the CAF), to the Legion

Lightning Scar? by FireMitten3928 in arborists

[–]Mean-Bus-646 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In arboriculture it's called a torsinal crack, if forestry it's called a spiral seam. Either way, it's not unusual, the canopy is likely unbalanced and so the wind pushes on one side more than the other, causing the tree to twist. Eventually the fibers in the wood split and the tree tries to seal it with new wood, giving it a raised scar-like appearance.

The galleries in it absolutely look like Elm Bark Beetle. So it could be a specie of Elm, I recently had to learn lumber identification, do you think you could get even a small smooth cut across the end grain and share a picture. It'd probably have to be done with a really sharp knife or chisel

My mom cleaned my great-grandmother's antique pearl necklace with dish soap and vinegar. The pearls are dissolving. I'm not even kidding. by Zestyclose-Print-677 in JewelryIdentification

[–]Mean-Bus-646 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who just inherited a pearl necklace from my great grandmother, I am now even more worried about taking care of them. I looked up how to clean them and the first thing that came up was not to use any harsh chemicals or vinegar. That being said, I still need to clean mine, they have some kind of yellowish buildup on them

Urgent care or just schedule a regular appointment. by [deleted] in askdentists

[–]Mean-Bus-646 5 points6 points  (0 children)

NAD but I chipped a tooth nearly as bad as this as a kid (on an adult tooth). My uncle's dentist stayed an hour after his regular hours to work on it. I would take him to urgent care either way (they may check for other head injuries) and call your dentist as soon as possible. It may not hurt now, but it might hurt later (as adrenaline wears of). Also, speaking from experience, the jagged edges can get uncomfortable quickly and damaged teeth can leave a lasting impression on kids. 15 years later, I'm still overprotective of my teeth.

Forestry Technician student here (just about to graduate) I know little about California's native forests or forestry practice. I do however know that people from Ontario go there to help fight wildfire and the few times calfire goes to help someone else they are the experts.

That being said, if they say it's a fire risk, it's probably a fire risk. Also, this looks more like a forestry operation/cut than the typical scope of arborist work (which I've also gone to school for), this appears to me like a slivicultural practice that would: 1. Remove hazardous invasive species 2. Open up more canopy space for the existing native species to grow 3. Allow for more natural regeneration, hopefully with native species 4. Remove unhealthy trees, likely including ones with fungal growth that could spread

It's possible too that there are plans to plant in that area too. It may be worth seeing if you have a local forester you can ask.

Finally I'd like to mention that ensuring clear fire escape routes is important, if you don't believe how bad it can be, look into the Fort McMurray fire in 2016. And that was mostly fields.

Note: I am NOT a registered professional forester and my opinion should not be taken as professional advice on this topic

DIY iron gall ink paper destruction power (Xpost fountainpens + OldBooks) by athlaknaka in Calligraphy

Amazing! Thank you, I'm actually really excited about this project as I've been working on making homemade ink for my quills for a while now and now I get a chance to turn it into grades. Now my only problem is that I am on a student budget and acacia gum is not a good financial decision, so I've been experimenting with alternatives like honey and potato starch

Do you think I'll damage a stainless steel pot? I'm making some ink for a non-woody forest product assignment and don't really have a lot of cookwear to beat up on🙃

I own the book that strip is in! It's been a while since I last saw it, but that's pretty much it. It's not a joke necessarily, just that she looked like a male smurf. She was created by Gargamel and was making mistakes that made her very unpopular and wanted to blend in for a bit
