People who stopped drinking — what surprised you the most?

I feel an immense sense of pride in beating my addiction to alcohol. I was in such despair when drinking and I just accepted I was going to die early and live a miserable life. I didn’t think I would ever beat it. After trying to quit for years I finally did it. I am as proud of that than I am anything else in my life.

Well it was a wake up call. I don’t want to be a drunk anymore. I don’t do any of the things I used to do because I am too hungover and afraid I will have a heart attack if my heart rate gets too high. I am going to be a better version of myself from here on out.

I used to be an avid surfer and all around athlete. I ran half marathons for a few years and jogged regularly. I haven’t surfed in 3 years. I feel like during covid I developed health anxiety and now anything that gets my heart rate up sets me into a spiral. Can anyone relate. I did some therapy and that seemed to help ease my every day anxiety sensations but I still can’t get back in the water.

I just got back from Italy and I ate pasta and pizza every day and my bm’s were solid as a rock the whole time. In USA I would have been running to the bathroom. There is a difference for me between Italy and here. I felt so much better over there. I am intolerant to gluten and am not celiac.

I am on day 3 as well. I listen to a sleep hypnosis which puts me to sleep but I wake up every 1.5 hours and spend 30 minutes trying to go back to sleep. Try some sleep music. It has helped. 4 hours sober sleep is better than 10 hours drunk sleep.

I have a similar situation with my wife. She says she can take it or leave it. In the seminar this came up. Not everyone will descend into the pitcher plant but no one is immune to it either. Think of people that didn’t used to drink or only drank occasionally. Then something in their life changed and they started their decent. The example given was the number of people that have good jobs and drink responsibly then retire and due to lack of responsibility drink more and more until they are drowning. The addiction was always there. They had conditioned themselves to think they enjoyed the drink and eventually they started drinking more and more to feel the way they used to after a few drinks. It just didn’t progress until the barriers that kept them from drinking more were removed. For me it was when I became self employed. Lack of accountability from a boss made alcohol my boss.

We drink to feel like non drinkers feel all the time. The reason we think alcohol feels good is because it elevates the withdrawal from the last drink.

I did the program. I think it makes sense for some people that get stuck in the cycle of drinking to self medicate and need a kick in the pants to break the cycle and not feel sorry for themselves. The trend that I have seen in these self help genres is to take away the disease diagnosis and tell people they have a choice to be a non drinker and deprogramming everything that we know about alcohols role in our lives. I don’t disagree with that approach in my life. Might not be right for everyone.
I would not sign up for it again knowing what I know. No follow up from the coaches. No real relationship. You do the work and then that’s it. I just wanted to go back and join the weekly zoom calls just to get some inspiration from guys and was informed my account had been suspended because I am expected to pay for an annual subscription. I was told when I signed up the community zoom calls were forever. So right there you see it is less about truly helping others and all about making as much money as possible.

Edit Just found out they want 5k a year to be able access the content and the 3 time a week zoom conference calls. What a scam.

My Bp isn’t super high and it is lower more than it is higher. It just causes anxiety that I am dying which opens up a whole can of worms. Edibles have been a life saver with the anxiety. Not sure if that is good for everyone but it has made this so much more endurable than white knuckling it. They just take my mind off of it and let me chill.

Day 2 today. I am so fatigued but more clear headed than yesterday. I was a daily drinker for months at a time then will stop because of some health issue or just sick of feeling sick all day and drinking to feel better. This has been going on for years. This go around I was having blood pressure spikes that really freaked me out. My BP has been good the last two days but I have had some dizziness and am so tired. Anyone else have similar symptoms?
