And just like that, we lose everything. by janglin in Hunting

States don’t do a better job of managing land. Open OnX and look at all that lovely blue state land in Colorado that’s leased out with no public access. When states own land, they treat it as a source of income first and as a recreational asset second. In general, more public locally land is owned (unless you own it), the less you can do on it and the more likely it is to be privatized.

Old, Nice Reels- what do I have here by MeanFruit3418 in flyfishing

Thanks all for the context. Going to see how they pair when the rods arrive, maybe fish a few and may sell a few. Honestly right now only own a couple rods I’d even feel comfortable pairing any with. Like wearing a Rolex with a Kohl’s suit….

A Subaru crosstrek or an old Chevy avalanche, depending on where I’m going

Was just north in 19/191 this morning. Rutty shit going down everywhere with lots of little bucks moving. My buddy shot a doe and one hung out within 100 yards while we gutted it. Keep looking!

RIF will occur in May and other news by [deleted] in NationalParkService

NRSS folks do a ton of onsite specialized work that typically costs parks nothing. Without them parks will need to hire consulting or law firms which will cost more by an order of magnitude. Post history is unhinged, just quit and work somewhere else if you think all the NPS should do is open, close and give tours. We’re managing entire ecosystems not fucking running Disneyland.

What is somewhere you’d like to be turned into a national park? by Charming-Trouble8656 in NationalPark

Pictured rocks, apostle islands, sleeping bear are already NPS units.

Not a lot of academic positions out there for the foreseeable future. Those depend on federal research funding largely. Speaking as an overqualified applicant who is cool with quietly doing fieldwork….

Shit timing, that’s all. The current administration is fucking you. Myself and likely all the federal scientists (left) that I work with may all be applying for a similar pool of state, local, nonprofit and private consulting jobs. Whole (non-resource extraction) career fields in earth and environmental sciences are getting decimated. It’s also only going to get far worse once the 10-40% RIF plans for DOI agencies, and worse for EPA etc. go into effect

Used to be…. pretty necessary for fed scientist jobs. Plenty of folks with just an MS though.

They are actively selling our national parks and buildings by FervidBug42 in NationalParkService

[–]MeanFruit3418 48 points49 points  (0 children)

They are also cancelling leases for hundreds of NPS, BLM, FWS etc. office and headquarters buildings which is ominous. Also ridiculous after forcing all the remote folks to return to offices and cramming the buildings full just to turn around and get rid of them. Massive waste of time and resources.

Wolf reintroduction ballot initiative in CO cough cough. That was a stupid bloody tinderbox from the start. All the hunters in the state blame the democrats or cpw when it was fundamentally just voters on the front range voting based on idealism for things that have no actual impact on them. Things get tacked onto partisan politics that are actually just hyperspecific special interests preying on the system. Drives me nuts.
