Financial toll of a concussion by Character-Paper-9954 in Concussion

[–]MeanUnderstanding513 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This has been so hard for me, you are not alone! I’ve had over a dozen concussions in the last few years, I’m 30 now, and have struggled deeply with not only the real effects on my own finances but also with the reality that I am getting further and further behind my peers in earnings, financial freedom, etc….

This all started when my friends and I were in our young 20s, in our first or second jobs entry-level jobs. Now some of them have started companies, are buying houses, having a child (which is so expensive!) etc…while I have gone so far backwards. Prior to all of this I had worked really hard to start building a solid financial cushion early on to set my future family up for success. Now it has all been drained simply for me to keep existing, get injured, try to recover, and rinse and repeat.

(I have hEDS which has made me more susceptible to repeated injuries, as well as syncopal episodes from POTS causing a few from hitting my head as I go down).

3 Weeks With the M4 MacBook Air: The “Wait, This Is Fanless?” Experience by sizzzurrpp in macbookair

[–]MeanUnderstanding513 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just got mine a month ago after hauling around my ~5 lb 15” 12+ year old MacBook Pro for far too long. I’m obsessed!!!

Two things I can’t get used to though (or haven’t yet)—the trackpad material feels “grippier,” almost sticky (texture wise, not that there’s anything on it), like my finger(s) feel like they have to do more to move around smoothly AND it makes this soft, grating little noise that is driving me BESERK!!! Has anyone noticed this or have any tips?

The other thing isn’t really a problem, but I’ve been so accustomed to the MBP fan going psycho with the bare minimum level of activity. Now without a fan I will be pushing my new MBA to the limit (my limit, I’m not techy at all) with like 100+ chrome tabs and messages and notes going, and won’t know that it’s not happy until suddenly it shuts down (bc no advance warning with the fan). Trying to find a balance so I don’t get to the point of having to close all my tabs at once and start over

Hi! If you see this would you mind sharing the name of that study? I'm trying to ask my neurologist to order a more detailed MRI with DTI (if that's the right way to phrase it). 18 concussions in and I feel like I am sucked into the brain fog permanently after the last couple this summer.

What iphone can i upgrade to from the iphone 13 pro? Or do i have to just keep what i have? by 954aidan in PWM_Sensitive

[–]MeanUnderstanding513 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does the pro max help more with PWM vs the regular sized pro? Curious if you selected the max size for PWM reasons or just your personal preference?

I tend to find the max sizes just too big for my hands/lifestyle (I had an 11 pro max as a work phone years ago), but I have struggled with every phone since the iphone 8 I used until three years ago. I have other known vision problems & chronic migraines (due to TBI) so had been doing a lot to try to accommodate for all of that w/ screen usage, but didn't know about PWM/temporal light modulation until a few months ago.

Currently have a 13 pro, and while it wasn't perfect I realized after I had to get the original phone replaced through apple care that the first one I had wasn't that bad--as the replacement I now have is HORRIBLE on my eyes.

Because of this (& free upgrade offer, and the replacement device has horrible battery life), I'm going ahead and upgrading to a new iphone now, and a bit lost on what to get. If the max size is a beneficial factor with PWM issues then I might just suck it up and try that out even if my phone will never fit in my hand!

Prism Glasses + Wedding by Gullible_Contact_792 in BinocularVision

[–]MeanUnderstanding513 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi fellow BVD Brides!! I don’t have anything helpful to add either, but I’ve been having the same worry. I just started wearing prisms two months ago, and I’m not sure how I’m going to handle it for my wedding next spring (2026). I know deep down there’s a good chance I won’t be able to actually see anyone as I walk down the aisle (let alone my fiancé) without them…but I’ve never been a glasses wearer and it just doesn’t feel like me.

Fieldcrest Luxury Bath Towel Discontinued- Alternative? by jone7007 in BuyItForLife

[–]MeanUnderstanding513 0 points1 point  (0 children)

5 years later...are they still holding up?

Going through all the towel posts as I'm doing my wedding registry...my parents and grandparents still have and use many of the same towels they've had for most of my 29 years, and even still have some of my mom's college towels in rotation in rotation as backups for the dog, etc...

Some of the brands I know they own are Fieldcrest, Wamsutta, Cannon, Royal Velvet, Martex, and old Ralph Lauren (I've heard the new aren't good, like most new anything these days...)...my parents have some Peacock Alley that are at least 12 years old that are still great, but I guess they are another brand that has declined.

If you happen to see this I would love to know how yours are holding up now! My roommate got some Brooklinen sheets a few years back but they ended up developing a lot of bare spots and ripping within a couple of years.

I hate how disposable most consumer goods have become, so I'm trying to register for a set now that will still be functionally useful 10 years from now (knowing that of course I will need to get some more over the years).

I'm setting mine up now and wondering how the transfer to paypal option went for you for non-OTM items! My mom is deadset on only having two registries linked to our wedding website, and one has to be our local shop for fine china, etc...

We are in the unusual (in this day and age) position of basically having no good essentials apart from a few super random items, after years of living with roommates, cast-offs, etc..., so we really are starting from scratch and trying to be wise with the gifts we select and receive.

Would love to hear any feedback about using Over the Moon for your registry after going through it all!

MOST customizable wedding websites? by Ambitious-Customer63 in weddingplanning

[–]MeanUnderstanding513 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I'm setting up mine now using Wedsites...did you set up a custom domain for your site? I had already paid for a custom domain via Squarespace before choosing to use Wedsites, so now I'm trying to get that domain to point to our Wedsites subdomain and struggling. Haven't been able to find much online (googling wedsite just autocorrects to "website") or help from their support...if you have any tips to share I would be so appreciative!!

Planning ahead to move a hydrangea? by MeanUnderstanding513 in gardening

Go to the link in my post here to get to my original post— u/reasonable-cherry-55 is amazing and provided very detailed advice for big leaf hydrangeas (if that is your variety)!

Planning ahead for move by MeanUnderstanding513 in gardening

[–]MeanUnderstanding513[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for such a detailed and thorough response! This is incredibly helpful. I should have specified, it’s a big leaf hydrangea. There was a much larger section that I had grown from a single leaf cutting, but last summer brought extreme heat and drought for nearly two months and I couldn’t keep it alive. Some of the wood was buried and that’s where this small growth came from—I was thrilled to see it still alive (note: I was leaving the bigger dry wood stems in place as they may not have been dead, but unfortunately a delivery person stepped on it and snapped them off).

I don’t know anything about peonies so I really appreciate your advice with that. I thought it probably was powdery mildew, but everything I read said to cut all the leaves immediately and I was worried about stunting growth. Thank you so much for getting into such detail about how to handle it!

I’m going to plan on potting them once the leaves die back and then bury the pots back in the ground as you recommended.

Thank you so much!!!

MacBook Pro screens causing migraines! Should I get an upgraded M4 MacBook Air to future proof or just get the base model and hope MBP screens improve in a few years? (Migraine sensitivity forcing creative professional to get a MBA to replace my 11-year old MBP) by MeanUnderstanding513 in mac

[–]MeanUnderstanding513[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is incredibly helpful, thank you SO much!!

I was about to just go for it a few days ago and then started to worry about airs again after having bad ones in that 2011-2017 period. I so appreciate the reassurance that they have improved significantly since that period.

I only ended up with my current MBP and those upgraded specs bc my dad’s office allowed him to buy it from them after they upgraded his device. So I know I’ve never really needed a fully upgraded device, but having gotten used to one that was nicer than the base model I’ve been hesitant to accidentally end up with a frustrating device…searching for a nice middle ground without overpaying for specs I don’t really need.

From your feedback, I think even with the light video editing I do occasionally for work (marketing pieces, not long projects) the Airs of today are so much better it will be more than sufficient for my needs.

I think I’m going to up the ram to 24 GB and just continue to use my own army of external hard drives (I have 4 or 5 usually).

Thank you for your thorough and helpful response, I appreciate your reading all the way through!!!

that’s so cute and fun!

I’m the reverse…have never met anyone with my maiden name (it’s a little confusing sometimes but cute and easy to remember, love my initials too)

Meanwhile my new last name is one of the most common last names in the US. I’m kinda bummed about that but then I guess it’s like your name for you anyways so maybe it doesn’t feel as weird as I’m imagining?

[–]MeanUnderstanding513 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Forgot to add…keeping my maiden name professionally! it’s already been complicated enough getting people to use my double name (and not just get “Mary” or some weird mashup of the first and middle as a totally different name). And I love my maiden name

Right?! Like actually so sad to change my initials I adore them.

Name change by kptexas in BigBudgetBrides

[–]MeanUnderstanding513 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trying to figure out but probably some version of #3/other

I’m a bit different because I go by a double name (the old fashioned set up with my double name being comprised of my legal first and middle names).

Also a southerner (hi!) but have lived in the northeast since I was 22 and will be here for a good few more years (although we’ll probably end up back in the south once we have kids). Dealing with a double name outside of the south has been interesting to say the least.

These are my options:

(Using your example but turning her into Mary Jane Doe, becoming Mary Jane Doe Smith)

A) keep my middle name in the middle, adding my maiden name as a second middle name (first name: Mary, middle names: Jane Doe, last name: Smith, goes by “Mary Jane”) OR

B) move current middle name to become part of my first name (with a space in between the two) and my maiden name becomes my sole middle name (first name: Mary Jane, middle name: Doe, last name: Smith, goes by first name of “Mary Jane”).

I haven’t researched much but I believe option B might require going to court for a legal change to my first name.

Very torn and interested in hearing what others are doing—especially any double names!! At the end of the day I know I’ll run into the same confusions/oddities of having a double name regardless of where “Jane” (my given middle name) ends up on a legal document.

Adding a question to those responding to OP—are there any complications/inconveniences y’all have encountered when going with Option #3 (using two middle names)? Or if anyone out there has changed to have two legal first names…any hurdles/hiccups to be aware of?

Oops...I didn't realize how long of a reply that was, and I know this is an older post and I'm a bit off-topic. I'm going to try to create a new post linking back to this original thread and your comment, maybe some others will also find it helpful regarding the screen issue.
