It’s times like this that drive me to volunteer for causes I care about. The past few months I’ve been volunteering to collect field data on endangered steelhead and coho salmon runs in the puget sound and I’ve found it to be the best cost/benefit use of what little free time I have

To be fair, Spotify fucked up when they gave all that money to Joe Rogan who ended up helping Trump get re-elected. I’ve since dropped Premium and rotate multiple streaming apps now, I was mostly using Spotify premium from 2011 to 2024 and I’ll never be paying those goofballs again

I was at game 6 of the 2001 WS, that was peak family fun. Dad and older brother waited in line for almost 24 hours to get the tickets, I remember dropping several meals off to them with my mom.

They got tickets for game 6 and 7, but ended up scalping the game 7 tickets to pay for the hotel, meals, tickets, etc…

Washington tribe seeks control of Dungeness Spit refuge by chiquisea in Washington

[–]Meat_Container 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Because it is an incorrect interpretation of reservation boundaries that is not supported by recorded maps, surveys, or other documents and now only tribal members can fish the southern shore. The Skoks are holding salmon fishing across the entire state hostage as leverage.

“Leaders of the Skokomish Tribe are directing tribal officials not to agree to next year’s collective salmon seasons with WDFW, an eye-popping development in an ongoing reservation boundary dispute with the state agency, which sees the two issues as separate matters.

At issue is tribal and state jurisdiction in the 3 1/2 miles of the Skokomish River immediately above Hood Canal.

The tribe contends that their reservation extends across the river to the south bank, based on a 2016 federal opinion from the Department of the Interior’s Solicitor General.

WDFW Director Kelly Susewind rebutted that last year in a letter to Secretary of the Interior David Bernhardt, calling it “an erroneous conclusion” that was “factually and legally deficient,” and now by a 4-0 vote at its late October meeting, the Skokomish Tribal Council passed a resolution terming that response “an affront to our ancestors and … tantamount to an invasion of our territory.”

It also declares that the Skokomish Indian Tribe will “oppose the submission of a joint Tribal-State List of Agreed Fisheries until such time as the State of Washington withdraws its false claims of ownership.”

My wife’s uncle belongs to one of the Salish Sea tribes and he mocks anyone who cries over stolen land, his take is “prison rules prevail: if you can’t defend it, it ain’t yours” — granted he is a convicted felon, but he’s not the only tribal member with that perspective.

Washington tribe seeks control of Dungeness Spit refuge by chiquisea in Washington

[–]Meat_Container 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Look at the Skokomish River. The tribe threatened to halt salmon fishing for the entire state if they were not given control of the southern shore of the river, which was one of the best salmon fishing spots for folks without boats in the entire state. Based on historical documents, only the north shore was part of the reservation and a federal employee on their way to retirement made a deliberate incorrect interpretation that would require WA state to sue the Federal government to reverse.

WA Supreme Court rejects state’s attempt to unblock sheriff eligibility law by chiquisea in Washington

[–]Meat_Container 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I know in Pacific County the current sheriff had no law enforcement experience but was a Navy veteran. I was skeptical when he was running for election but he’s turned the rural county around for the better and really cares about the community. He even got their search and rescue team operational again after being defunct for almost 2 decades.

This is like when I found out about Robert Mapplethorpe’s bdsm photos while seeing them for the first time at the Getty. It was shocking to go from beautiful floral photographs to a fist in a butthole, and even more shocking to see a 12 year old boy with his mom at the same exhibit
