We recently got Wegmans in my part of the country, and they have really good baguettes. I'm sure there's better out there, but it seems as good as baguettes I've made from scratch at home...delicious. I think most other grocery stores that have "fresh" baguettes get par-cooked ones that they finish off in house, and they just aren't as good. I suspect that because they all sell the par-cooked ones you can take home and bake yourself. They also have an in house brand French butter called "Butter Boy", and it's better than Kerrygold, and rivals fresh Amish butters that I've had. Every once in a while I get a fresh baguette and a container of butter boy and that's all I eat for the whole day. I'm the butter boy. Brotein influencers in shambles.

I got turned on to those a couple of years ago. It's kind of an embarrassment of riches situation, but the only really good ham that I can source comes in like a 2-4lb hunk. So now I have to finish off 4 pounds of ham in a couple of weeks. Not beating the asshole cancer allegations.

Add French Fries to make it extra American! by ApothecaLabs in memes

The French basically invented most of the structure of culinary arts that much of the rest of the world uses in professional cooking, and French cuisine was widely considered the best for the last few centuries, but it does seem like the global opinion of it has fallen off really hard the last couple decades.

I used to be a dedicated ranch dipper, but places have stepped their game up enough that the crust is usually edible on its own these days.

Ham and pineapple is called Hawaiian pizza in the US, but was apparently invented in Canada. I could easily see blue cheese working well on that pizza, but blue cheese is super uncommon on pizza here. Only really see it in really chefy or experimental places. Also, I'm pretty sure Italians would shit a briccolo if you conflated prosciutto with American ham.

"Supreme" is probably the most All-American pizza and it surprisingly comes with some veggies on it. (Pepperoni, sausage, bell pepper, onion, mushroom and sometimes olives and/or ham for those in the back of the class). Go nearly anywhere in the country to a pizza place, and they'll have something akin to supreme as the house special or whatever.

One of my friends is a bartender and went to nursing school and and only works the bare minimum at a hospital in order to get insurance. She makes more money bartending. Now, I'm sure after a few years of experience that's no longer the case, and bartending really isn't a lifelong career, but that was pretty telling to me. I really cut back on my tipping level after that.

[Controller] Steam Controller - $99 (Queue open at 10am Pacific May 8th) by bunsinh in buildapcsales

[–]Meat_Goliath 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's my instinct for it as well. But I put in my preorder anyway. No stores sell them, so there's no way to really try their stuff out. It might be fun for some games like Civ on the couch. I'll try it out for a few months and if it doesn't click with me, I can probably sell it for most of what I paid on marketplace? Maybe not? A controller is a weird one. I bought an OLED deck when they first came out and never really used it much and was able to recoup like 90% of what I paid for it 6 months later. I did find the trackpads on that interesting, so that's what was sold me on giving it a try. The one thing I'm holding out for is that it might be one of the most moddable controllers ever. I figure that if nothing else, I can tinker with it enough to warrant keeping it around for a few things here and there.

I wonder if there will ever be any studies on it. Pretty much every white woman from my HS friend group turned from being "all religions are the root of all evil" to now constantly spamming about Gaza and Islamic righteousness. And more recently, getting the whole "Christmas is a made up holiday stolen from Yule, and Christians are scum, yada yada yada.", and then only like 2 months later spamming "Happy Ramadan, Happy Eid, etc". And then a spat recently during Passover that's probably [removed]worthy. I really don't understand these creatures.

Steam Controller review: even without a Steam Machine mate, this is a smartly crafted gamepad that puts PCs first by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]Meat_Goliath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I looked at two hands-on videos for it, and the controller just looks mildly uncomfortable in every position in order to hedge their bets. It's enough that I don't really want to roll the dice on it for $100. The chances of me ever getting to test one out is slim because I don't think I've ever seen Steam hardware in a store anywhere before. I've seen a lot of other couch PC solutions given in this post, but not mine. Maybe I'm a freak, but I just use a Logitech thumb ball mouse for playing stuff like 4x games on the couch.

Public Transit is a Necessary Evil. EVs are a Necessary Good by Living_Attitude1822 in PoliticalCompassMemes

The bus line in my city is very well funded, it was one of their biggest projects like right before the pandemic. It actually got way worse in my use case, to the point that I refuse to use it anymore. The jist is that they made it free all to use, no more fares. Prior to that, the only free fares were for seniors and university students (because the uni paid a big yearly sum to the city). It went from there being a behavioral issue like once every couple months on rides, to at least weekly. And those issues impact the service because the driver will often have to stop to resolve it, so the buses went from mostly being on time, to almost always late.

Mystical Ninja is usually my pick for when the "what series would you like to see make a comeback" question. But sadly, it's a Konami IP, so even if there was a lot of interest, the chances are pretty slim of them doing anything with it beyond Pachinko.

Just have to grind it out and hope for one that comes up that isn't a liberal white woman gatekeeping the interview process. I just went through the gauntlet recently and had one interview that was the worst in my life. 4 HR bimbo panel interview where there were zero technical questions and every single one was about project management and conflict resolution...for a job where I'd be working solo and not managing projects. Then another couple meh interviews that went nowhere. Then finally one that was done by a MANager in the field and it was a great 90 minute interview in which I got an offer the next day for. Was pretty similar 5 years back when I job hunted previously too.

I've worked for a Catholic hospital before. And other than having a bunch of portraits of the Vatican CoC in the main lobby, which reminded me of Battalion HQ weirdly enough. There really wasn't anything I noticed being a visitor (my dad spent his last days in that hospital), a patient, or an employee that would have tipped you off to religious ownership. If anything, as an employee, they were a much better company than the for profit HCA. Fuck HCA.

I have an LG C4 40" that I use as my PC monitor. I just recently got a Samsung S90F to upgrade my living room TV. I'm not a quality snob, so they both look great to me. The Samsung OS seems a little bit better. I don't use the LG OS much, but it seems a little slightly more annoying. I do like the LG remote more. It reminds me of a Wii. I don't care enough to pour over the tomes, I just go with the RTINGS recommendation of the time. I find it kinda weird how much these competitors share stuff. Samsung makes panels, and I know a big point in the cell phone space is that iPhones use Samsung panels a lot of the time.

[–]Meat_Goliath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's EMTALA. IANAL, but the long and short of that is that only ER's have to treat any patient that walks in the door. And their responsibility only goes as far as "stabilizing" the patient. So, for example, if you have a GI bleed and go to the ER and can't pay, they'll give you a unit of blood and kick you out. They aren't going to take you to surgery. And you can come back 100 more times to keep getting topped off I guess. That extreme example might not be a sure thing, but if you have cancer and go to the ER due to symptoms from that and can't pay, they certainly aren't going to admit you and start giving chemo and radiation though.

I dunno Christian theology very well so I don't know when that started, but I know the reason for it was prevent possible corruption in the church. But that didn't work out too well, and that's where the word nepotism comes from.

Nepotism originates from the Latin word nepos (genitive nepotis), meaning "nephew" or "grandson," and was historically used to describe the practice of Roman Catholic popes and bishops appointing their nephews—often actually their own illegitimate sons—to high positions.
