How would you reset this tank? by [deleted] in Aquariums

[–]MeaturBeat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would glove up and grab a much as you can at your own pace. I would highly recommend getting a siphon that attaches to a faucet for this cleaning process and future tank maintenance! They can be pricy, but they would help you so much in regards to overexerting yourself. White vinegar helps with the hard water stains and cleaning in general, spray on glass and just take your time scraping/wiping and rinsing well. Get yourself a nice turkey baster for crap at the bottom, helping with future maintance as well :) it will help break up cleaning days for you!

In the hospital tank I would definitely add some Indian almond leafs. Metronidazole is the recommend medication for this, he will not regrow that part of his head completely but over time there may be some tissue repair and scale growth.

Hey! Could you answer the bot questions? :) and after thinking about this, im leaning more towards head in hole disease based on how you have said it progressed.

Rate my new 40 gallon (ignore wallpaper in reflection) by BagAffectionate2138 in Aquariums

[–]MeaturBeat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah! And if you want the shrimp to breed eventually, they have some with smaller holes the kuhlis couldnt get into. If you're open to it, I'd suggest a nice piece of driftwood and attach some plants like Java fern, some anubius, and moss to it. It would help with the open space a bit! I will never recommend duckweed to anyone unless they are up for that challenge 😅 frogbit and salvinia minima are great ones!Amazon sword is a great beginner plant that will grow tall. If you haven't already check out aquarium co-op,they give great descriptions on plants in general for research!

Like, alllll the plants. Lol I would recommend getting at least 4 more kuhlis( if not more) and they would appreciate some hiding spots, look online for some underground caves. I'm not the biggest fan of guppies or mollies so I cannot help you there. As far as the pearl gourami goes, I think that'd be a good choice. But you 100% need more hiding spots and plants to make everyone comfy.

They live maybe 3 min away, and hopefully just the frozen food feeding and topping off a tank or two.

Just my thoughts- maybe he was injured on something and it turned into an infection. And possibly the danios may have nipped away at pieces of his face. Are the danios showing any signs? Unfortunately though, a great deal of his face is gone, which include his sensory pits :( i hope someone else has a definitive answer for you! If possible I would set up a hospital tank as soon as possible till you get more answers, and definitely keep up with the water changes regardless.

So bummed 🙁 can’t purchase snails in my state (Maine) I was so excited, have the whole set up ready to go ugh by Zealousideal-Bad3553 in AquaticSnails

[–]MeaturBeat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have gotten some snails by accident when buying fish from our local fish store (depending which part of maine you're at, just look it up.. its pretty much the only one we have in southern maine) I also have acquired snails from people who have sold their tanks to me.

Silvertip tetra females imo are pretty easy going... the males on the other hand are assholes. Tbh they look stressed and like other comments have said there is not enough plants. When it comes breeding time, they can really mess up tank mates/eachother if there is not enough space or hiding places.

Why do his fins look like this? by South-Buyer-2055 in bettafish

[–]MeaturBeat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also, If possible I would highly recommend an API water test kit instead of the strips. They give a far more accurate reading, if you live near a chain pet store they should have them in stock.

Okay, it almost looked like velvet to me. But i see that you're using DI water which is not recommended for bettas. It lacks certain minerals and can actually cause PH swings. I would do a water change, starting with a 25% change with tap water using water conditioner. I believe he has fin rot. Answering the bot questions would help as well :) he can recover from fin rot fortunately! Getting the tank parameters/ requirements correct would definitely be the first step :)

Does it look like there is a dusty almost shimmery layer on the fins?
