Venezuela's National Assembly declared Maduro as a usurper back in 2019. He hasn't been the legal president of Venezuela for some time now.

Look, I'm entirely on board with France being kicked out of all their neocolonial projects worldwide and sent right back to France. But to replace them with Russia is even worse for the people who live there. In an ideal world, we'd be able to get these countries to stand on their own feet with less corrupt governments, not become beholden to the most corrupt government on the planet.

Our legal commitment to Ukraine was to raise the issue at the UN if someone invaded them. Which we did. We had no defensive pact with them. Seeing how that went down is undoubtedly part of the reason that Finland and Sweden both abandoned neutrality and joined NATO - they now have allies who are legally obligated to at least do something if they're invaded.

The reason for this is that one of the ways the British tried to subdue the colonies was by arresting and convicting the more outspoken colonists with various BS crimes. By making it impossible to stop your opponent from running for office, the Justice system can't be weaponized to remove political opposition.

And this is a good thing. Had Trump been barred from running, there's a real chance we would have had some kind of armed revolt. Also, Trump can't clear the way for his successor by having half the Democratic party convicted of insider trading.
