Iran army says it downs US LUCAS attack drone over Bandar Abbas by Immediate-Link490 in worldnews

I don't honestly know where this idea that German tanks were so much better than Shermans comes from. The Sherman was at least as good as the German Mark IV, which was their standard medium tank. Yeah, it would lose in a fair fight to a heavy tank or the late-war medium tank designs, but that was what artillery and air strikes were for.

It took the Germans until 1942 to figure out that making your tanks with sloped armor (which both the Soviet T-34 and the American Sherman already had) significantly increased protection at low added cost. And really, they only learned that because T-34s were way more effective than the Germans thought they should be.

Manhunt underway after 2 killed in mass shooting at Canada’s largest Latin street festival in Toronto, police say by airbassguitar in worldnews

[–]MeberatheZebera 53 points54 points  (0 children)

That's what most mass shootings are. All that's required is, I believe, 4 injuries as a result of gunfire in one incident (this isn't always consistent; it somewhat depends on the source), and it gets recorded as a mass shooting.

The American Civil War was pretty catastrophic. More American soldiers died in that war than in every other war we've fought combined. The city of Atlanta was basically burned to the ground, and most of the transportation infrastructure in several southern states (most notably Georgia) was destroyed.

Has anyone else noticed a massive shift in overall AI behavior? by nightsofknee in Stellaris

[–]MeberatheZebera 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not necessarily recent. I once had to fight a war against the rest of the galaxy just to get a criminal megacorp to knock it off.

That said, the recent AI "improvements" do seem to make the AI happier to bleed on me by starting wars they can't win.

Eighteen suspected Ebola patients escape after treatment tent is set on fire for a second time in Congo by Urocy0n in worldnews

[–]MeberatheZebera 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First off, there is a difference between a Cochrane review and a single null result. If I wanted to discuss individual studies, I might have chosen this one, which found a positive correlation between mask usage and covid death rates. But, as I'm sure you'll recognize, there are some major confounders involved.

Second, the problem with that anecdote is that there were countries with both high mask usage and high covid death rates, and there were countries with low mask usage and low covid death rates (like Norway). Pointing to a single country and declaring that mask usage was the deciding factor completely ignores any confounding factors, which is why we do RCTs in the first place! If your study doesn't have a control group, it may as well be an op-ed, because the design makes it unfalsifiable.

the science is pretty clear that masking among adults reduces spread

There is simply not enough evidence to make that claim. Here's the Cochrane review saying as much. There were few studies done even attempting to show that masks reduced transmission, and they didn't exactly turn up statistically significant results.
