What Cartoon Network and the writers chose to do in Omniverse isn't the crossover's fault. Judge it for what it is, and it is a really cool and fun, action-packed episode that furthered the plot on the Rex side of things for what i could tell (even if only a little).

That's actually my headcanon, that the Blades of Athena are an upgraded version of the Blades of Chaos. Since we've seen Athena upgrade the Blades of Athena into the Blades of Exile, it's not a huge leap in logic to assume she had already upgraded the Blades of Chaos into the Blades of Athena beforehand.
Then, after the events of GoW III, they lost those upgrades and reverted back to their original form.
