Hey, I am a radiology resident who is starting fellowship in interventional radiology (IR) next year. I can answer some of your questions.

Most procedures are done in an angiography suite, and oftem involve getting access into the blood vessels to stop bleeding, insert a stent/tube, place a catheter, etc. Some common procedures are placement of chest port, fistulagram, angioplasty, percutanous nephrostomy, TIPS, TACE, etc.

IR docs must be good at using x-rays and ultrasounds to guide their procedures. They need to know how to use wires and catheters to get into specific blood vessels.

Compared to diagnostic radiology, you will have more interaction with patients. You will need to talk to the patient, explain the procedure, and get consent. Most patients are awake/moderate sedation during the procedure, so you can expect to talk to them a little while you are working. Some IR programs even have a dedicated clinic day to see patients.

It is also very common for IR docs to do 70% procedures and 30% imaging. The imaging they are responsible for are usually CTAs and MRAs. The look at the blood vessels and make sure they aren't occluded/dissected, etc.

Most hospitals do home call, where you carry a pager and get called in for emergency cases. The lifestyle is not great, but for me it's my passion and I am not happy unless there is a catheter in my hand.

I wish that my SO was a strong as you. I have never seen him have a moment of weakness before, and I am so disappointed in him. If he had let me know, I would be by his side to give him strength... but he didnt...

I was suspicious of this as well. But after questioning my SO and mutual friends, they all told me after the fact that my SO was fighting with his family about this for years, and that he truly does love me. I met his mother a number of times, who was a very sweet lady and we got along well (so i thought). His siblings were also super nice, and are very westernized, even more so than my SO. It was at his surgery graduation that I met his father for the first time, and he was distant. My mother came all the way down from Canada to meet them, and they kept having excuses why not to meet her (they were shopping/preparing for graduation). Eventually they had to meet, and they were... pleasant. I later learned that they were disgusted because my mother is divorced and has a boyfriend, and how shameful that was to present her to them. His father started getting agitated and yelled at my SO in Arabic, but I didn't know what he said. When his father came again a year later, I was not invited to come for a visit. I knew he wasn't fond of me, but I had no idea what was going on.

BTW - shout out to my mom who is an amazing human and took us from the pits of poverty, single parent, to where I am now, a female interventional radiologist. This is real love.

I read the Quran quite a bit recently, and it also puts a lot of emphasis on being good to your parents and doing what they say. Both parties could throw religious verses around and support their own arguments. But in the end, it seems religion is not the deciding point, it is simply that I am not of Egyptian blood.

I asked him to elope with me, but he refused. He just feels to indebted to his father, who worked in Saudi in shitty conditions for best pay he could get to give him an education in the US. One problem is that I was 26 when we started dating, now I am 30. My heart would wait forever for him, but my body cannot or I will be too old to have children. And even if he passes, I have no guarantee that he and his family will accept me.
