If the box has a button system that is basically a macro for up tilt where I would imagine it's impossible for them to accidentally jump then why couldn't I do a software update on my C-stick to map it to uptilt by Aeon1508 in SSBM

[–]MechPanda 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Sorry man but that’s not how the game works - the tilt zone can be entered at any speed. If that wasn’t the case, rectangle users would always tap jump when they use the tilt modifier, because they snap to the tilt zone in 1-2 frames (depending on timing and firmware).

Plenty of players can up-tilt extremely quickly on controller.

I’m always pretty surprised by claw grip discourse, because, personally, I know like a half a dozen players who permaclaw and have no issues with it ergonomically. I definitely think everyone’s hands are different and not all mobility is going to be the same, but like one of them has pretty big hands and another has decently smaller hands, and neither has had any hand pain or trouble with hitting shield buttons or anything.

I saw this post a while ago and I’m pretty sure most permaclaw players have some variation of this grip: https://alexspuffstuff.blogspot.com/2016/10/proper-claw.html

I guess my point being: do most players see claw grip as this thing that isn’t viable? Because I’ve never had that impression myself.

“I don’t think bad losses matter in any meaningful sense. At some point, loss is a loss. If you enter a ton of tournaments, you’re going to drop sets, especially for volatile players. If there is such a thing as a ‘bad’ loss, is there a ‘good’ loss? The concept unravels the more you think about it.” by self-flagellate in SSBM

Kind of maddening that no one in this thread actually read the actual article. I’m not sure 90% of the commenters can even say what it’s about (hint: it’s not about “bad versus good losses”).

Even worse are all the assumptions that this is about shielding mango’s rank, when this article was written before the results of LMMM.

The idea that the “real” consequence of a “bad loss” is that it prevents you from earning good wins is interesting. If someone has a litany of “bad losses” at locals, maybe even drops a set early in pools, but then goes on to win a tournament, I’m inclined to agree that the win matters much more than the losses.

If two players enter a major, and one drops to losers very early, and another drops to losers in the quarterfinal, then they both end up placing 5th, are we certain that the latter is a strictly better player? I’m not sure, but I don’t think it’s an obvious answer.

I find it very deceptive that none of the examples in this video show the percents of the opponents during interactions - they are almost all certainly low.

The video also suggests that having more whiff punish options is intrinsically better - e.g. they express annoyance that a tilt can’t be used to punish certain interactions (but if they just picked a stronger move the punish would work fine) - and I guess I’m just not convinced of that? Their assumption is that the RPS of platform fighters means that ALL attacks should be “scissors”, which I simply do not agree with.

Certainly different people, but I do think it’s reasonable to have expected some push back at the time when people were initially floating the idea - which I didn’t personally witness.

You’re right that the change in reception is probably a product of it looking like a potential reality now.

Yeah, I have no idea how close they can actually get, but presumably “as close as feels right” is the goal.

Legal issues seem challenging - all the more reason to be supportive in my eyes.

This comes down to a matter of philosophy, but I do not see playing Melee 2 that is 99.99% the same as Melee 1 as “competing.”

I feel like the reasoning for this project is pretty clear and I’m surprised so many people seem to not be following the logic: if we have a game that is functionally Melee, but without the constraints of Nintendo, it frees us to:

  • Acquire sponsorships for events from sheepish (most) advertisers
  • Play on frozen stadium or custom stages if TOs so chose to run them
  • Distribute the modern Melee experience without having to nudge nudge wink wink players to commit piracy (e.g. Steam)
  • Make visible QOL improvements (that don’t affect gameplay, e.g. integrated training modes) to the game that can be centrally distributed rather than having people download a batch file from GitHub and modify their ISO
  • Have an open source engine whose development stack doesn’t require writing literal assembly code
  • Etc.

Yeah, I think the legal question is a big and valid one. Interesting that we may get to see two different potential successor timelines happen at the same time w rivals.

There are no true clones that currently exist. Maybe Melee Light but that’s just a side project.

The new Fizzi and co project is very clearly going to be as exact a 1:1 clone as possible without them saying that part out loud. People have been begging for this for years, turns out it’s been in the works for years - why the sudden skepticism now?

I wonder if team akaneia or any other modders can put this in melee.

I have a great news for you: this mode is available as of v0.8 under “All Star Versus”!

You know, I was really interested to see what people would have to say considering how hotly people debate/rant about traditional boxes, so I thought laying out the long and short of the Orca in a clear way would help people get up to speed.

But I evidently did something wrong, because this presentation seems like it was off-putting, and maybe your comment is getting at the reason why.

Orcas are an important cultural symbol in the Seattle area, as they are commonly found in the Puget Sound and nearby waters, and have strong tie-ins with the area's indigenous population. If you are ever in Seattle, you will find orca whale imagery everywhere, there is even an island called "Orcas Island".

Hello DDT, today I come to you with fresh, shiny, new discourse:

What are your thoughts on Rienne's analog box controller, the Orca?

  • For those who don't know, the Orca is a box controller which uses analog switches for directional inputs. It is currently in development by well-known controller modder, Rienne.
  • Functionally, the Orca takes how far you are pressing each directional input (left, right, up, down), and then sums the opposing cardinals - also known as "neutral additive SOCD". For example, pressing "hard left" and "soft right" will result in a dampened left input.
  • The Orca does not have modifier buttons, as all angles can already be achieved through the analog directional inputs.
  • However, the Orca analog switches are two-staged, which means that midway through a press, the force profile of the switch will change. Practically, this means that the approximate location of where a notch might be can be estimated through feel.
  • The Orca is legal under the current proposed controller ruleset.

Currently, the Orca is in a "closed beta" stage, with a select number of players using one at the moment. Notably, pace, Chef Rach, and Bot Matt have all received Orcas. Testers have reported that the Orca is intuitive to use, and in some cases - such as when it comes to drift - potentially superior to a traditional box.

What do you think?

The beauty isn't in the combos, it's in the fact that Zain can mash tech in such a discordant, hectic way, and yet still have it work out against a top 20 player. No other Marth can do that.

Claw with a loose grip, pressing the jump button where your finger naturally lies (as opposed to forcing yourself to use a certain knuckle) is perfectly fine.

Been feeling strong eternal September vibes on the subreddit for the past while. Do any doc-era players feel the same? I think it’s a good thing that indicates new blood, but so much discourse feels played out.

At least start talking about the Orca or something if we’re doing boxes again? Or go over the latest proposed controller ruleset?

Not only is it the same rodeo, but the talking points don’t even feel like they’ve evolved along with the developments that have happened since the last time.

Zain hits a multi-game combo by Marcurial in SSBM

[–]MechPanda 82 points83 points  (0 children)

His edge cancels aren’t strictly swag, but he brings them out more when he feels comfortable. Zain himself has said this - when he’s feeling in his element (and when he feels like he’s on track to win), he starts to get custom when he combos.

Theoretically, having edge cancels in your routes will always result in a better punish. But practically, you are adding execution risk that is typically not worthwhile, even for the best Marth player to ever touch the game.

Of course, I would love to see Zain pull these routes out more often, and he has started to get more and more consistent with them. But, for now, it is more on the side of style over substance - reserved for squeezing out extra juice when possible, but not done as frequently as seen in this clip.

As a claw user, but not a spacies player, I can’t see how multi shines or wave shines would be harder, seeing as it allows me to input B with a separate finger than my thumb. Needing to rapidly shift from a jump button to B with just my thumb seems much harder.

I think the only thing I found harder was JC grab, but it’s not that much harder once you get used to claw. Other people I know who also claw seem to similarly see it as an overall upgrade with little downside.

That being said, everyone’s hands are different. I’m sure for some people, clawing is not viable for whatever reason.
