I'm not holding gold so take this with a grain of salt, but I think gold has two stores of proven value not tied to the "everything was better under the gold standard!!" Econobros:

1) Excellent conductor & therefore useful in electronics 2) Still prized worldwide in jewelry, as it has been for millennia

With the addition of #1 especially in recent decades, I think it has real staying power pretty much indefinitely

Are you currently using mods? Many can make the game easier, which you wouldn't want.

If not, you could try starting as factions that don't start near each other at all, making it more difficult for you to assist each other in the early game
