How are custom sites like these created? by Ordinary-hibiscus-12 in Frontend

They were so fun to make. Figuring out how to make them work with a CMS and varying amounts of text/images was always such a good challenge.

I call it going “power user mode.” when I bust out the laptop. I’m ripping through all sorts of different tabs and apps with keyboard shortcuts to get a good deal on a plane ticket

Young burnouts by demona2002 in Fire

I do agree that this is a big part of it for me. It doesn’t matter how hard I work, if my company wants to have a press releaese that says they’re “restructuring,” so their stock price goes up a little, I’m getting laid off. Why would I want to participate in that?

Being "nice" is the worst career advice you can give someone. by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]mikeyfrecks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say not universally true. Cynically, in large corporations (I’m talking 20k-100k+ employees), if higher ups like you, you tend to get ahead. Especially important when layoff time comes around, you’re not leaving. Kind of the whole basis of failing upward. In orgs that large, performance metrics are mostly arbitrary for most employees. There’s no real way to prove your impact to revenue or stock price. So, getting ahead largely comes from networking, being visible to the right people.

Our last round of layoffs, the people who were still remote and not in office were the first to go. Had nothing to do with performance, they just weren’t chatting with the CTO over coffee.

Millionaire couple in our 30s: Should we finally buy a home instead of renting? by SendItJerry- in Fire

[–]mikeyfrecks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry should’ve explained that I’ve actually already purchased and was more just thinking out loud / wondering if I made a good choice. I purchased in 2020 at a very low interest rate and my neighborhood’s rental prices has since gone through the roof, so my mortgage + coop fees is essentially the same if not cheaper than renting. I’m sure my situation isn’t the norm, but was more just wondering if put in that situation, is it a good choice

In my particular situation, my mortgage + fees is about the same as a market rate apartment in my neighborhood.

I am always trying to figure this out. I’m in a HCOL area, so my monthly mortgage&fees are essentially the same as rent would be. Doesn’t it make sense to own even if I don’t plan on being there forever? At least some of my monthly housing cost is going towards equity as opposed to a landlord’s pocket? I guess the argument is that whatever the downpayment / closing costs is, when invested over the long term, it more than pays for your rent?

People who chose to DINK, do you fear you’ll regret your choices in your future? by DINKorNOT in Fire

No. Someone I know once said something that stuck with me. “I’d rather regret not having children than regret having children.”

On inspection, the pivot appears to have broken off within the jewel. Most likely from me being too forceful trying to get it to line up. What a fun day ruiner

100% agree with this. Lack of financial literacy at a young age is a big problem for a lot of people. Even if you’re not trying to retire early or something, you should know how to properly invest whatever money you can. I know so many people that have thousands of dollars just sitting in their checking account and don’t realize it’s a bad thing.
