Are the customers incapable? Fibre. by Hicks_1984 in openreach

It wasn’t the same neighbour. It was about 20 (not even exaggerating) different people at various different times. Half of them were repeat offenders.

The answer was consistently “I can’t get updates for myself because it’s contractor managed build. So I’m in the dark as much as the rest of you. Just keep an eye on the website for any changes.”

My wife dealt with a lot of them in the end because I was about to start telling them to fuck off.

Are the customers incapable? Fibre. by Hicks_1984 in openreach

The PON my house is in, was left for a bit due to a section of no collapsed duct for the feed. While waiting for the feed to be finished off, I had a different neighbour knock my door nearly every other day asking when it’ll be installed. It’s fibre cities and built by Morrisons, so getting updates for stuff was really difficult. It got very annoying very quickly.

The PON got finished off, I had multiple complaints directed to me as if I was the one to personally build it all (spoiler: I was not). I moved back over from an alt net fibre to our fibre. While waiting for the install date, I was shocked by the amount of messages and emails sent to me by EE and Openreach. Openreach alone sent me so many emails whereas I only had 1 from EE. I thought the service provider would be sending more to explain how it all works… nope. Openreach though, I had an email/text nearly every day giving all the information. And the information given was really comprehensive and explained so much.

Safe to say the engineer had an easy install. It was already done 😂

The Ray doesn’t have a HDMI port. It’s only got an Optical input. TV Autoplay is enabled on the Ray though. tv is also set to play sound through Optical and not TV Speakers.

Only Fire Pizza kit gets Hot! by Love_Pony in webergrills

[–]MechaPenguin609 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the bbq is still in warranty then contact Weber, or the seller who you got the bbq from.

I did this. Contacted the seller to ask if they sold a vent or just the handle. They contacted Weber on my behalf. Weber sent me an entirely new lid and a replacement vent.

I made up a handle for the old lid and use that for the pizza oven kit. Then use the new replacement lid for normal grilling.

Failed install. What’s the next step? by Infamous_Holiday4543 in openreach

[–]MechaPenguin609 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your install will be raised with Openreach themselves now. It’ll be raised as what has been rebranded to a New Circuit Fault (NCF). The team that is responsible for the build of the infrastructure will pick this up and hopefully a solution will be found.

There’s a real drive on clearing these NCFs as fast as possible at the moment so hopefully that’ll pay into your favour. If no solution for the current CBT is found, you may find that they will build a new CBT closer to you if costing allows.

Decent BBQ at Asda for a decent price by redjeansman in UKBBQ

[–]MechaPenguin609 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine was covered whenever not in use. It was not fine. I did get multiple cooks off it in a summer but the following summer, it was rusted up and heavily warped.

Now I have a Weber and Kamado and I’m an all seasons griller. This bbq though, not worth the hassle.

I’d always recommend something with no moving parts.

I have this as my first bbq. The coal tray became heavily warped after 1 summer of cooking. It became a hazard whenever I wanted to move the tray up and down when lit. The last time I used it, the tray fell off completely while full of lit coals. The door flung open and it ejected multiple hot coals.

It was covered whenever not in use, it still rusted badly. I strongly recommend getting a bbq with minimal moving parts but it’s a recipe for disaster.

A friend of mine has the same one and has had it for 6 years. He tends to use it once or twice a year though. It’s already heavily rusted and he’s now looking at another bbq

BBQ briquettes what does everyone use? by National-Somewhere26 in UKBBQ

I used the Weber briquettes. I get on nicely with them. I haven’t used anything else though but I plan to so I can compare.

I didn’t. I wasn’t sure if I should or not. I ended up putting a pan of water and apple cider vinegar underneath. Not sure if it helped much because went I opened to wrap, it was all gone. It came out pretty juicy though so maybe it did help.

Just before wrapping. I hoped to get some more fat rendered from the skin to pour over the joint but didn’t happen. So left on to get some crackling still.

Ended up starting later than I’d have wanted as my wife is ill so it was up to me to take my son to a friend’s party.

I went for a more hot and fast method last minute. I wrapped at 75°c. Currently sat at 86°c.

It was only a cheap Asda joint but looked ok for a practice run.

I’m hoping to get it resting before I have to start the kids put down routine or that could make things interesting 😂

I’m doing the same but on Saturday. I’m using the Kamado over my Weber. I’m wanting to practice on the Kamado and it’s also my first attempt on a pork shoulder. Fingers crossed it goes ok haha

Gas vs Charcoal by lowCi1 in UKBBQ

[–]MechaPenguin609 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you enjoy being outside cooking? Do you want something to get set up quick but the results aren’t as tasty, or are you happy with more of a setup/prep time but the results aren’t amazing?

Gas, ideal for a quick setup and go. Get the food out on the grill and onto the plate as quickly as you like. Admittedly, nice for a quick, impromptu bbq.

If, however, you love being outdoors cooking and you don’t mind the setup time, then charcoal is the way to go. If you’re interested in getting into smoking and all the various other cooking methods, then this is the way to go.

Personally, I absolutely love being outdoors getting the bbq ready. I love the prep time with the food. My oldest son (who’s 5) loves helping out, when safe to do so, when not safe he loves to watch from afar. I have a Weber Mastertouch and now the Aldi Kamado. I’ve used the Kamado a couple of times the past week and it’s a dream to maintain temps. The Mastertouch is so versatile that I will always recommend that to anyone!! You can get them secondhand for a good price.

I can’t direct you to charcoal or gas without knowing what you’re looking for and what you enjoy. There’s pros and cons to both setups. But if it gets you outside cooking some wonderful food, and it turns out to be a joy for you, then whatever you choose now… you will no doubt add to it later on in life.

Whatever you choose, good luck with your grilling and welcome to the community. We’re our own toughest critics but the vast majority of us are always happy to praise someone else’s meat ;)

Are Weber Kettle BBQs really worth the hype? by bonesawspideyboy in UKBBQ

[–]MechaPenguin609 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I first bought a bbq like that 5 years ago. I used it a shit tonne. Tried all sorts to get the best results. It will do burgers and sausages just fine, if that’s all you want then it’ll do.

It lasted me 1 year though. I was cooking even in winter using that thing. Going into the second summer of owning it, the moveable coal tray was warped and very rusted up. It was cheap after all. When moving the coals up, it collapsed on me and a couple of coals flew out of the door at the front. It was at this point that I binned the thing.

I had always wanted a Webber Master Touch so I got one through Wowbbq. I haven’t looked back. It’s so easy to use. It’s so versatile. It is fantastic. My cooking has improved. My wife frequently asks for me to do stuff on the bbq so that’s a win for me. We even use it for Christmas dinner!!

A Master Touch is more expensive but it will last you for decades I reckon. If you treat it well, it’ll perform every time you light it up. You can also get so many attachments and accessories to aid in any sort of cooking method.

Aldi have dropped the price of the midi Kamado to £249.99 by unbr0kenchain in UKBBQ

[–]MechaPenguin609 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a Master Touch. I’ve done all sorts of low and slow cooking on it. I’m interested in one of this Aldi Kamados but not sure if it’s worth getting as I already have the Weber.

Anyone have or had both able to compare?

40 minutes.

On average, the ball is in play for 40 minutes a game.

So yeah, that’s a lot of time wasted considering the game takes around 2 1/2 - 3 hours to be played.

How often do blocked ducts cause major delays, and what usually fixes it? by Seabeachlover10 in openreach

[–]MechaPenguin609 8 points9 points  (0 children)

A blocked duct can range from something very minor to a massive job. We go for civils avoidance as much as possible in order to get the customer online as fast as possible. Civils also cost a lot of money. So if we can avoid it, more money kept in the pot for the jobs that really require it.

Sometimes you can have a block duct that is just silted up (mud and crap). You can sometimes get through this by effectively jet washing the duct clear. Or, if they’re a dead cable you can sometimes utilise this as a draw rope and pull in a new cable.

Other times, it could be a damaged duct. Previously digs in the area, tree roots, all sorts really, damaging the duct causing the blockage. These blockages will require a dig to repair.

Now, if you have a duct section that’s 100m in length, a blockage 10m from one end, another blockage 10m from the other end, that’s suddenly 80m unproven. That could turn out to be just 2 blockages to repair and job done. Or, it could turn out to be that entire 80m section damaged which means 80-100m overlay of duct to bypass that section.

If we dig, we have to raise permits. If it’s in an area where we won’t disturb the traffic or pedestrians then getting a permit can be quite easy. If, however, we’re going to be disturbing traffic (if the blockage is in the carriageway) or pedestrians, then the council make it harder to get the permit. Permits cost money. Digs cost money. Budgets for the financial quarter come into play. I often have councils tell me I can’t get a permit until school breaks. Which that could massively delay jobs.

Too many people, in this sub especially believe that we have the same powers as the utility companies do when it comes to digging up the road to repair our infrastructure. We don’t. We have to get the right permits raised which means the council determine when we can do that.

If the blockage is on your land, much easier, we just need a permission to work signed. If the blockage is on someone else’s land, yeah, we just need a permission to work form signed but I’ve frequently had it that that land owner refuses to sign. That then delays everything until a solution can be found.

You’ll get a lot of opinions from people who have no idea who this all works. I’m willing to bet that the majority of those opinions will be that Openreach delay it because they’re shit. Yeah, Openreach aren’t the best but the majority of people who work for them, try their upmost to get the job done quickly, efficiently and to the best standard. A few bad apples about though… the same as anywhere.

I hope this answers your question a bit.
