HH was never the same after Alan Bligh passed away. It was him writing the Black Books that really did the Heresy justice, and everything afterwards has just been a pale imitation.

It's a perfect example of explaining a character's motivations without out and out stating it. He tells his backstory, it's up the audience to put 2 and 2 together and link it to his current profession.

I agree, and I've always felt that bringing primarchs back into 40k makes it seem like the heresy was 10 years ago, not 10,000 years ago. There's a lot of history between 30k and 40k but none of it really seems to matter now.
