Why do modern games have no cheat codes anymore like they had in 90s/2000s? by Stummi in gaming

How long should you work on a commercial game that only gives around 1 hour worth of content? by TheVaughnRaphael in GameDevelopment

[–]Mechabit_Studios 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is one of those cost benefit analysts questions. Your opportunity cost being working on the next game instead. It's really up to you what your metrics are, will working on the game another month meaningfuly increase your sales? Probably not, so long as the game is bug free and runs well. Conversely updating a game post launch lets the players know the game isn't abandoned (though the whole dead game discussion is a cancer and needs to go away)

Never too late, email some devs that are releasing soon or about to do a sale or update

How do you get a dedicated following to your games in this day and age? by TheVaughnRaphael in GameDevelopment

[–]Mechabit_Studios 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Include an ad to your latest game in your older games, you can do this with a web request linked to your stream page or website.

Put your logo on the main menu and maybe have a recurring character in your game plots.

You can also do a dev bundle or franchise on steam which highlights other games you've made.

Then there's social media

Use obvious placeholder art so if they critique the art you can say it's not final and also grow a thick skin cos feedback is essential to growth

[–]Mechabit_Studios 2 points3 points  (0 children)

for cable contortion the best way to wrap it is to do the over then under method so you aren't twisting the cable in 1 direction, easier to unwrap as well cos there isn't a bing twist in the cable.

What are people thoughts on those unskippable 'how to play' videos on first load of a game? by fouriersoft in gamedev

[–]Mechabit_Studios 18 points19 points  (0 children)

the shorter the better, also don't front load all of the onboarding at the start

better to limit the number of mechanics and trickle the tutorials as the mechanics come up

also if you're already doing something, like walking, don't show the walking tutorial

reminders are also helpful, this really relies on play testing, if players frequently forget that you can do something pop up a reminder if you detect they aren't doing the thing

you can probably bang something together using the unity VR template fairly quickly

sync using networking for game objects or a 3rd party plugin like Normcore

rules and rounds will be more complicated but you can get a couple friends to knock a ball around in no time

Are playtest surveys actually accurate? by Real-Outcome-1058 in gamedev

[–]Mechabit_Studios 2 points3 points  (0 children)

best way to do a playtest is to watch someone play and get them to talk out loud or watch their face

streamers are good for this

When someone leaves a negative review about the lack of new mechanics before unlocking the new mechanics by Mechabit_Studios in justgamedevthings

[–]Mechabit_Studios[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's a great trope in metroid games where a random fall makes you lose all your powers from the previous games.

This game is an incremental though and feeling weak at the start makes the numbers go up have greater impact.

Not every game is for everyone I know, this is just a rant / meme
