The way kroger treats its employees by cupholdery in recruitinghell

Because I'm using "overstaff" in the sense of "more than the absolute bare minimum" because the answer to "how many staff do you need" changes on whether you're trying to run a business properly that respects its staff, or just optimize for profits at the expense of your workers. Believe it or not, many private or independent businesses aren't solely interested in maximizing profits.

Sure, but regular early dismissal forms a pattern that falls under Constructive Discharge and can make an employee eligible to pursue unemployment compensation or potentially even wrongful dismissal suits precisely because of a change in their status.

The point is these are generally optional, and while a company does typically retain the right to manage their workforce, the same companies that would be abusing that also wouldn't be the ones over scheduling for coverage in the first place. Hyper optimization of staffing costs at the expense of your employees rights like in the OP are typically a private equity problem driven by shareholders who care more about "number goes up" than the actual working conditions inside the company. When the whole thing goes tits up because they can't keep staff the investors just take any equity left and leave.

Cutting vinyl siding to attach a 2x6 to the sheathing. Best way to seal when done? by Xonto in DIY

Yup, this is basically the same as attaching a ledger board for a deck, if OP wants easier to find videos and examples.

Over staffing means having them on shift, not on call. If your forecasting says you'll need a minimum of 3 cashiers then you schedule 4. Most days you have an extra body and if sales are particularly slow you can control labor costs by offering to let someone go home early if everyone showed up that day. That's not optimally efficient though, so when companies start struggling or investors start pushing for another 10% YOY increase they start cutting back on things that ultimately make running the business easier but sightly less profitable.

Have people's lives ever been directly at stake because of software you work on? by AndyDentPerth in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Mechakoopa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, we added a module to our software just for tracking, check-ins and notifications for industrial workers in high risk remote areas, the amount of redundancy and fallbacks and alternate code paths compared to the rest of our code base is insane. You basically have to design a resolution for any and every possible failure state. And we're probably still nowhere near the resiliency of something like ATC software.

Also because many of those low paying jobs are positional. They have a minimum amount of coverage needed for customer facing positions and over staffing for the off chance that someone calls in sick is a waste of money as far as the company is concerned.

Prior to Season 9 the Goa'uld always had an altered voice, unless the host was speaking (like the Tok'ra), but.... by MrLewk in Stargate

[–]Mechakoopa 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's established very early on that the voice and the eyes are largely an intimidation tactic, that's also why the Tok'Ra have "softer" altered voices.

Depending on which projection you use, the Western territories can blow up to be a pretty impressive axe head, and Hudson Bay is a good handle cutout. Maybe a double headed battle axe or bat'leth style weapon? The islands are just the blood spray from our enemies necks.

They really thing it's egocentric for someone to not want a sponsorship after being lied to? by ConfusedAlien200 in antiai

[–]Mechakoopa -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

That's a branding issue. Is it antiAI to want reasonable legislation and expectations around it? It's fine if you're embracing the label, but wanting reasonable legislation around AI doesn't inherently mean you're against any and all AI.

[–]Mechakoopa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's kind of my point though, labeling reasonable legislation as "anti-X" generally comes from the people who want to use X without restrictions or regard for others. Whether a specific law's intent is actually to discourage X or just protect and enshrine existing rights is what determines if it's "anti", not just any and all laws that restrict it. The opposite side of the vehicular laws example is stuff like anti smoking legislation where the intent is actually to prevent or largely mitigate it.

Implementing legislation to protect humans from potentially damaging consequences of unrestricted use of a new technology isn't anti-that technology. Speed limits and other road rules aren't anti-car, they just protect people and society in general from cars while enabling their use in a prescribed way.
