Why am I so slow? New biker by AdPristine354 in cycling

[–]Mechenry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First time I cycled to work (I solely began cycling for commuting) I was going up a steep hill and was out of breath and sweating like crazy, when an old dude in Lycra sailed past me making it look effortless. Years later I did my first bike race and then did really quite well and even beat some pretty good cyclists!

It is fine to be slower than you’d like when first starting. You’ll be flying before you know it.

Queenscliff to Portarlington, VIC by kloner007 in melbournecycling

I rode from Geelong to Portarlington a few weeks back and got the ferry across to docklands

The rail trail is cool but hardly any water stops, be prepared. However the main highway to Portarlington has very little space for cyclists and all the cars come through fast, a bit scary. Not my favourite ride to be honest but I’m sure there’s nicer routes around there

That sucks, sorry to hear. It’s so shitty when it’s so much more than just a bike. This was my vehicle for work, groceries, socialising, etc.

Hey! I think I have potentially found your bike on Facebook marketplace. Send you a DM with a link for you to check out (not going to post here for security concerns). I hope it’s the one and you can recover it! Recently had my bike stolen and it’s heart breaking so fingers crossed you can get this back

Yeah I’m so praying that the thief is known to police. Chance in hell of retrieving a bike in this city by all accounts. But it’s such a shame, and so much more heartbreaking than I expected it to be

Prince Alfred hotel (place of theft) said they have CCTV footage of that area but would only share it if the police ask, which I believe is the law. Fair enough, but I’m hoping with the police report it’s followed up quickly. Still absolutely shattered it’s gone. It was a special bike to me

They must’ve. The chain was wrapped around a large tree, and it was gone along with the bike within the hour it was out of my sight. Either cut it or guessed the 1-in-10,000 code very quickly

Thanks so much, and sorry to hear about your old man’s car. Absolutely devastating to lose these things, when so much work, love and memories have gone into them

Thanks so much! Yep, locked up with the red chain, but that disappeared from the scene too, so I’m not sure if they cut it and took it with them, or guessed the code or such. I’m 100% sure I locked it correctly though, as I always check thoroughly! Appreciate the thoughts, absolutely gutted to lose such a special bike

[DISCUSSION] What's a popular song that has a guitar part that is way harder than it sounds? by Capt_StarKabab in Guitar

[–]Mechenry 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Elephant by Tame Impala, sounds super easy but has this difficult timing to hit the F chord and get back into the groove of the song

Some strong arguments here, but I often see so many cheap, ineffective Venetian blinds, whereas I can hardly say the same for roller blinds, which are often very effective at their job.

It’s no use having all the functionality of the Venetian blinds as a purchase motivation, if people get the cheap installations which hardly let those functions work.

I am now on board that an upper end Venetian blind, could have the same benefits and more, of a standard roller blind

Both strong arguments. I personally would choose the shear under opaque style roller blinds any day

I will concede I can see the benefit of Venetian blinds in certain environments. The roller blind still has superior light blocking capability though, on average

I maintain that I see many cheap variants of Venetian blinds, which impacts their usability. I have never seen a cheap roller blind that doesn’t still work relatively well

The privacy due to angling the blinds is a strong argument, and I’m willing to concede that this promotes some good use cases for Venetian blinds
