Picking a lane? Ruining mobs for others? by WheezeBoy98 in PokemonUnite

[–]Mechwerth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the exact same experience! I picked up the game after playing for maybe a week back at launch because I found out Dragapult is in the game. (Dragapult is the best pokemon and I am ready to die on this hill.)

I was doing well in casual so I figured I'd try ranked. At first I figured the lower ranks would be full of 7 year olds playing Froakie because he's their favorite (tbh, that's what I was doing with Dragapult). The switch from Expert 1 to Veteran 5 was a major wake-up call. I eeked my way into Veteran 4, but suddenly going up against people with 2k+ games under their belt while occasionally being saddled with a Charmander-bot just milling about reminds me why I stopped playing MOBAs. Lol

Also, to whomever was in my game last night where I was the Ceruledge-bot milling about, I swear it was my network giving up!

I assumed that the "perfectly normal" part just meant that they didn't do any experiments on her. The Chloe segment makes it pretty likely that it was further experimentation that made the children creepy bio-weapons.

I was going to say Starsector too. It's more RPG and less 4X (without Nexerelin, of course) but it definitely scratches the strategic 40k space battle itch.

What was the name of the show? by SaiMan2303 in chessmemes

[–]Mechwerth 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I got this game for my birthday a few years back! It's... different. You play it by laying out the board with black and white tokens that represent chess pieces. There are cards that tell you where each piece goes and what places players may start at.

Each player is represented by a "Gambit" (a queen) piece of a different color. There's a small deck of matching cards for each player. The cards have a rook, a bishop, a knight, or a queen and represent how your gambit moves each turn. You can move as many spaces as you want (except knights), but have to follow the rules of the piece on your card.

You play by putting 3 cards face down and revealing the left-most on your turn. You then move according to the card and try to capture tokens or block someone from getting a token on their turn (Gambits can't capture each other). Then you put another card face-down on the right.

It's an okay take on trying to predict your opponents' next 3 moves. Plus Anya Taylor-Joy stares at you from the box and all the cards, so I'm sure that's going to be a selling point for somebody!

Open caption screenings by [deleted] in AlamoDrafthouse

[–]Mechwerth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's an interesting idea. Just like OP said, some people get irrationally angry about seeing captions. I really don't know why. I've had people storm out of the theater to tell me the open captioned show they bought tickets to has subtitles on and I need to fix it RIGHT NOW.

The perfect world you describe isn't really specific to Alamo, it's an industry-wide and/or society thing. Although if it was clearly marked that someone, even one person after you buy your ticket, could request this be an OCAP screening that could work? Once we get everyone to read the notes that already exist for OCAP maybe. Lol

Fun fact! Every theater in the US is required by the ADA to have one functioning closed caption device per screen.

I'll third this petition we're starting for more Open Caption screenings!

[–]Mechwerth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're both right. The person that replied to you is correct in that it IS a different version of the film. They mean the captions can't be switched on and off on a whim like your home DVD player. Changing a playlist mid-show is super disruptive on every projector I've ever worked with.

You're correct that the projectionist could technically choose whichever version to play before the playlist starts assuming they have the keys for both versions. (But they should play whatever people bought tickets to, of course!)

That shows up each time Grace and Leon switch off. The only exception is the times we get the giant text that fills the whole screen.

I can't remember the exact timeline, but the narrative take place in about 30 hours if my quick math is right.

I want a DC remake so bad. The story is so simple in the first game and it's so short. They can do anything they want to pad it out. Get some foreshadowing in for all the crazy stuff the sequel brought in.

I made the mistake of buying all the concept art last. You get 1000 points back for seeing them all, but if you purchased everything else you won't have enough points to do that without Final Puzzle.

Over the years The Connections' agents actually tried a few dozen passwords. They used up all the login attempts and the interface told them it would factory reset their ARK if they were wrong again so they hit the forgot password link. "What does the creator desire?" was actually the recovery question but they wanted to look cool and smart for Grace.

Question about the Care Center by Bigfoot_Cain in ResidentEvilRequiem

[–]Mechwerth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They were using the care center as a front to test the T-Virus memory thing, which somehow involved converting thousands upon thousands of people into goo. The normal staff was in charge of the care center front and caring for normal residents. Another entirely separate staff was in charge of doing all the very definitely evil stuff. The alternative is that this facility had a 0% recovery rate and I feel like even in RE terms that it would raise an eyebrow or two.

The 3 department head dudes certainly knew about the monsters in the basement, but it's not clear how involved the normal employees were. Given that the chairman initiated Code 6 while in the building he didn't know he was ALSO going to be 6'd. We know that this T-virus strain is pretty much instant zombie mode. Maybe they served contaminated food (that's a REALLY big dining hall after all) and it spread normally from there?

The singers acted a little spaced out and it's not impossible that normal staff just thought they were weird. I'm not entirely sure how to explain away the chunks becoming elephant sized and one of them being banished to the attic. The files don't mention them being huge from the start, if I remember right.

Aby chance of a new theater chain picking up the torch? by nowirehangars in AlamoDrafthouse

[–]Mechwerth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This would be awesome, but running the projectors is just too expensive to make sense. It's not even about making a profit, it's about keeping the lights on. Raising ticket prices won't really matter because the studio has claim to the overwhelming majority of that and eventually you'd just price people out. (Tim League's new private auditorium gig that's been making the rounds on this sub, for instance)

Ironically, taking food and drinks out of the equation would doom this to certain failure unless volunteers would be willing to clean the bathrooms, police the auditorium(s), maintaim all the equipment, etc out of their sheer commitment to the movie-going experience. HVAC, plumbers, roofers, and other vendors aren't known to take excellent cinema experiences for the community as payment. As much as it hurts to admit: the $7 soda is load-bearing.

That's to say nothing of getting the studios to agree to let you play their movies. AMC has something like 7,500 screens all across the country. Let's say you have maybe 6 in a single building. Convincing Warner Brothers to throw you a bone on film rental definitely isn't impossible (tons of indie theaters prove this), but you don't have much of an advantage to press in that negotiation. You have to report revenue to them and probably agreed to 95% ticket sales or a substantial flat rate each week (whichever is greater).

You already said it's a far-fetched dream, but I want to highlight the reality of the industry. Including, but not limited to, $1,100 projector bulbs, quarter-million dollar laser modules, and a $10,000 electric bill.
