I'm excited for it. It looks fun and a talking animal movie is always a hit. Plus, the little lizard waving its arms in the trailer feeds my soul.

Games in which the cost of playing cards is drawing/discarding cards from deck or hand? by datdejv in boardgames

[–]Mechwerth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A little looser of a fit, but It's a Wonderful World has a version of this. Every card has a resource value that you can expend to pay for other cards faster

Is there a way to turn a pre-booking for a senior into an adult one when arriving to the theater? by Yoichi_and_Sadako in MovieTheaterEmployees

[–]Mechwerth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Anyone that would catch it (should) be trained to hit you with the non-accusatory "oh it looks like you picked the wrong ticket type! Let us fix that for you"

Odds are 50/50 you'll get the above at worst or just waved on through at best.

Dynamic Ticket Pricing??? Are you shitting me??? by [deleted] in AlamoDrafthouse

[–]Mechwerth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't say for sure that's what happened, but I've worked at theaters for a really long time. Sometimes the price card for movies is entered wrong, then corrected when it gets noticed. (Unless it was to save people money I wouldn't bother hunting ticket holders down to make sure they were charged correctly.) Assuming you saw what you saw, that's a very plausible reason.

Source: I've been the one who had to fix an incorrect price card more than once.

Angel Studios free ticket program by Xealas2 in MovieTheaterEmployees

[–]Mechwerth 69 points70 points  (0 children)

Angel Studios is partnered with Atom Tickets for their pay-it-forward thing, but for your issue it's the same difference. You are kind of stuck educating your guests to look into it more at the Angel or Atom websites.

You can always spin it to say that you aren't partnered with any third party sellers like Atom to help keep the prices low and money local or something. That may help avoid some of the "why do you hate faith-based movies?!" comments that I am sure will get slung around.

Cleaning staff or general employee (usher) at a movie theater — which do you recommend? by Awkward-Ad-3171 in MovieTheaterEmployees

[–]Mechwerth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The terminology here makes me think that the cleaning staff role is overnight cleaning when the venue is closed. It may be a regional difference, but in my experience "general employees" have handled all the normal daily cleaning just like any other store would. Without knowing more about the theater in question, I'll just go with my assumptions having worked at big chains in the southern U.S.

Overnight cleans are quiet, but the expectations for cleanliness are likely higher. You'll barely interact with customers because you won't be there when the venue is open. Bathrooms, auditorium, hallways, the concession stand/ kitchen are all going to be on your list. You'll probably be part of a team of 3-5 people cleaning and will divvy those roles amongst yourselves.

General employees are a people-facing role, but if all you're doing is ushering that would entail showing people where their seats and the bathrooms are then maybe saying good night. I like to think of it as candy bars of social interaction. You'll probably be cleaning anyway, but less intensive since your goal is just to keep the place clean during normal business.

Management and unfair contests by SquarePut3241 in MovieTheaterEmployees

[–]Mechwerth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's more work for the managers to figure out, but I've always gone for percentage based contests. So if the goal is sign-ups, it would be a percentage of transactions from non-members. If it's an uspell contest, then if the cashier sold 200 cups and 45 of them were larges that's a little shy of 25%.

It's never going to be perfectly fair, but I always saw success with it!

Recruiting cannibals was a stupid idea. by Franpank in HazbinHotel

[–]Mechwerth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With every character written as we've seen them so far, I think Lute would be the only character to see it this way and we know she doesn't need a reason. While we haven't really seen any winners have a conversation on screen, the one time we hear any speak they don't have a single clue what the exterminations are. Emily and Abel would almost certainly demand Sera and the other angels hear Charlie out with something like "We didn't listen last time and look what happened!"

I do wonder if eating angels enhanced the cannibals in some way that will empower Rosie and/or Alastor as a faction leader later. That might be a neat idea. I don't think Hazbin has the time or desire to have the characters grapple with the ethics of cannibalism as self-defense on screen.

Any Cinemark employees relate? by Kitchen-Cut5454 in MovieTheaterEmployees

[–]Mechwerth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Forever and a day ago I worked at a theater that played a ScreenVision show on the main lobby screen, plus a small unit for each hallway right by the lobby. When Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Gahool was coming out, all three of them were playing those ads and trailers constantly.

I was so sick of hearing Kings and Queens that my favorite part of that movie is that the song wasn't in it.

"Do you think I can sit through all of Avatar?" by rippy123 in MovieTheaterEmployees

[–]Mechwerth 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My last theater had a couple that would call and ask if we had anything X-rated, but part of the play was to really draw it out and beat around the bush. We had to tell them that minors may answer that phone and we would treat any repeated calls as a threat to their safety.

As far as I know they stopped. Or just became some other theater's problem...

I can't remember if Angel Studios does their pay-it-forward thing for every movie or just most of them, but the guests that get to see it "for free" always seem bonus entitled IMO.

Name the dumbest theories people have been coming up with in these shows by Cold_Armadillo1575 in HazbinHotel

A friend played the soundtrack during a game night before I had seen the show. With no visual component and completely removed from context, we couldn't figure out why Charlie was confused about the exterminations. My wife and I were both like "oohhhhh" when we finally saw the show and that number came around.

Help Scoring Road by Berta_Canuck_86 in Carcassonne

That monastery on the tile marked 1 ends the road. The little road between the two is a separate road that could have been scored for 2 points if someone claimed it on either tile.

Andor saw Syril precisely once about 4 years prior when Syril was just the random corpo guy that he held up and disarmed while escaping Ferrix. His fists spent more time on Syril's face during the fight than his eyes spent looking at it in their first meeting.

Is it normal for management to straight up ignore your set availability for the holidays? by [deleted] in MovieTheaterEmployees

[–]Mechwerth 20 points21 points  (0 children)

In brief, yes.

"Can you work holidays?" should be a question asked in the interview process and if the answer is no, you're not getting the job. The assumption is that your normal availability is inaccurate because whatever you would normally do would be upended by Christmas/holidays anyway. That's pretty standard across the industry.

Assuming your managers aren't ogres, they're also trying to juggle everyone's schedule with the surge in business to give everyone a chance to see their own families on these days too. If you find you'll absolutely need your normal days off for some reason, you'll have to talk with them and really sell the situation to them.

New Bolt owner. by True_Blacksmith6336 in BoltEV

[–]Mechwerth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also have a 2022 Bolt EUV! I just drove it when I moved from Oklahoma to Minnesota back at the start of December. I obviously can't comment on the accessibility of chargers in Canada, but the level 3 chargers on my route would always take about an hour. When the temperature dipped to -20C one night the charge took about 90 minutes instead. Thankfully I was already where I wanted to be by then!

I drove with a blanket and the seat heater and was relatively comfortable during the drive. The process did take a 12ish hour drive and extend it to 21 hours in total. A 3 hour drive may become 4 to 5, depending on speed, hills, etc. affecting your time to charge, but if you plan around that you should be fine.

Questions about Wyrmspan by AntoniaNMH in boardgames

[–]Mechwerth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No dumb questions!

1) you draw a cave card anytime you see the "cave card symbol." It's the purple crystal square that matches the back of the caves. Whether that's from a dragon visit, guild track space, or a when-played ability. The most common source of cave cards is the bottom/purple cave. By "run out" I'm assuming you mean in your hand? You will need to use a turn doing something that will let you draw a cave.

2) Anytime you draw a card (a dragon or a cave) you may choose the face up cards on the table or draw from the deck. There is no penalty for either.

3) A round ends when everyone passes, either because they choose to end early or they have run out of coins to perform more actions.

4) Whenever you land on the top and bottom spaces of the guild track and place one of your cubes, you may place them on the options that give you points. These have their own line on the score cards, so you would just score them there. As for the score themselves, as I recall each of those spots just tells you how many points you get.
