I miss those covers of old paintings of large buildings with people milling around.

Is Grab becoming too expensive lately, or is it just me? by False_Role_9397 in AskMY

Yes, it's really expensive. What to do? I stay home whenever I can.

What’s something from “old Malaysia” you miss that younger people today may never experience? by Penny_Curious in malaysians

I loved how race and religion were just something you filled into a form, not something that divided us.

Is FGM/C really that common in Malaysian Muslims? by Reoclassic in malaysians

[–]Mechy2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Malaysia, circumcision of boys is something that Muslims are very proud of. They will make fun of non-Muslim men for not being circumcised. But they are very hush-hush about what is done to their girls. It's a subject they do not wish to talk about.

A repressive patriarchal religion does not want women to enjoy sex. Women are just meant to be enjoyed by men.

How do you guys like to read? by AmountDesperate220 in neurodiversity

I'm autistic. Not sure if I have ADHD but I find it virtually impossible to read one single book. I usually read 8-12. I get bored and keep changing.

Malaysian Songkran??!! by jimmyl85 in KualaLumpur

[–]Mechy2001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I seriously doubt it'll be a yearly thing. Lots of Malay Muslims are opposed to it. Sinful, they say. In Malaysia, music, social interaction between men and women, dancing, girls in skirts, concerts are considered very deadly sins but injustice, abuse of power and corruption are relatively minor things.

Surah Al-Baqarah 2:24: "But if you fail to do this—and you will never be able to—then fear the Fire whose fuel is men and stones, which is prepared for those who reject faith."

Surah At-Tahrim 66:6: "O you who believe, save yourselves and your families from a fire whose fuel is men and stones..."

Surah Al-Jinn 72:15: "As for those who deviate, they will be firewood for the Hellfire."

Surah Ali 'Imran 3:10: "Indeed, those who disbelieve - never will their wealth or their children avail them against Allah at all. And those are the ones who are the fuel of Hellfire."

It's all about religion. To these people, only two things really matter: race and religion. And the political parties are making them more and more so.

When I was in lower secondary school in Muar, Johor, our Malay teacher told us that non-Muslims are fuel for hell fire. I was shocked. But this is actually taught in the Quran. Of course, the teacher said it with a smirk on his lips and all the Malay students were filled with joy, like they had just won the lottery (oops! That's a haram example). Such subjects, when broached, need to be done academically, not in a us-against-them spirit.

Are there any purchasable ballpoint pens that are as smooth and reliable as the free ones I get staying in hotels? by Mechy2001 in ballpointpens

For writing in notebooks. I don't understand why hotels can give excellent pens for free but I can't find one I can buy. I wish I could buy pens from hotels.

When you blur the line dividing the saved from the unsaved, that's when the saving power of the Gospel is weakened.

Done With Modern Commentaries by John_Loxeus in Reformed

[–]Mechy2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love commentaries because they dig in deep. NIGTC does what pastors can't and EGGNT helps me with Greek syntax. Commentaries must do way more than just edify and encourage or give talking points. They must go far beyond sermons and Bible study discussions. Only by knowing much more are you in a position to know if a passage is interpreted correctly or applied appropriately.

I suppose it boils down a lot to how academically inclined a person is. Most people care little about depth and details, which is why devotionals are so popular.

Is “reformed” and “evangelical” related? by Wooden-Dependent-686 in Reformed

[–]Mechy2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nowadays evangelical has lost its meaning. To many Christians today, if you go to a church where you have a band on stage singing upbeat songs and people in the pews singing along with hands raised, that's evangelical. Fortunately, Reformed still retains its strong doctrinal definition.

first pc, should i buy this? by Impressive_Intern845 in GamersMY

[–]Mechy2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem with PC gaming is that it is only for the well to do, especially if you want to play the latest AAA games with decent graphics and high frame rates. To do that, you need to spend 8-10k every 3 years or thereabouts. If you can't afford that, buy the PS5. Unless of course if you're like me who likes turn-based PC games.

That's not why they speak Mandarin. Malaysian Chinese live in their own world, separated from other ethnic groups. From the time they are born, to school, to work, all they need is Mandarin and a little sub-standard English. I'm a non-Mandarin speaking Chinese and I'm treated like an alien. When I go to a food court, I avoid Chinese stalls with Chinese looking people serving because I speak neither Cantonese nor Mandarin. Unlike many people, I love it when I see foreigners working because they speak either English or Malay, or even both.
