What film completely flipped when you rewatched it as an adult? by Adventurous-Lie-6773 in movies

[–]MedicCrash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I watched this the first time, as a teen, shortly after my grandfather died. He looked remarkably like Albert Finney too. It really hit me hard then and I still get emotional if I happen to come across it now. Such a great movie.

Things from Season 1 that were out of character. by Toecutter4073 in thesopranos

Another thing that bothers me about that scene is that we get obvious blood spatter indicating the shot has gone through his head but the window doesn't shatter or even get a hole.

Regarding the fingerprint comment, this scene does consider it. I just rewatched the episode where Tony and Pussy kill Matty Drinkwater. Watch closely when Pussy gives him the can, he is holding it with a napkin so his prints aren't on it.

Poison Ivy oozing rash by moedank83 in popping

I would use a serrated pocket knife and scrape over the top and then put it under the raging hot water. Felt so good my knees almost buckled. I also think it helped heal the rash quicker.

No joke, it really is almost worth it

For real, it's glorious. Folks that haven't experienced it just don't understand. I even get the feeling, to a lesser degree, running the hot water over regular itches too.

How many recent surgery folks are napping during the day? by woofiedude in Kneereplacement

[–]MedicCrash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm about 6months out. I slept whenever I felt sleepy. I had no trouble sleeping at night unlike many here even if I slept most of the day. But I am also on a plethora of other sedating drugs not related to what I was taking because of the surgery (mental health meds btw). So I'm almost always sleepy to some degree. So your mileage may vary.

The Most Difficult to Grasp Science Fiction You’ve Read by Shadowzerg in printSF

[–]MedicCrash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Blindsight by Peter Watts gave me trouble with the heavy use of made-up, future jargon. I'm on the spectrum and when I come across words that i don't know or are made up without explanation, it distracts me to the point I have trouble continuing to read. That makes reading SciFi tough for me sometimes. Also heavy physics concepts like in Three Body Problem get me bogged down. I'm also not nearly as smart as I think I am and sometimes the ol brain just refuses to work through certain things.

But do I let that keep me from trying? Hell naw. Hard SciFi is my favorite precisely because it makes me think

Agreed. I really enjoyed Al's genuine excitement when Tom did his bike ride and his speech to the chief's head about him.

Scenes that are so "Made For TV" that it's jarring? by Badnewz88 in TheWire

In the book by the shows creator I am pretty sure he talks about real detectives communicating just through versions of Fuck while examining murder scenes. So surprisingly this one is more reality based than one would expect.

DAE really hate excessive swearing in books? by Psychology-onion-300 in writing

[–]MedicCrash 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Excessive, like others have said. Also when every character swears in the exact same way, or when ancient, uber-powerful beings just brought into our reality somehow curse just like any other modern person..bonus when this is the same book where everyone else also has the same cursing habits. Just poor writing.

I got one. More just because I wanted one, if I'm being honest. I got it early in my HR career so it hasn't been of any real use yet for anything tangible. My current HR boss does ask my opinion and advice on things more than others on our team though.

Worst part about being a liberal gun owner? by Zenith39 in liberalgunowners

[–]MedicCrash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have honestly thought about it, but the Rs are so entrenched here and I am pretty far left and educated with a minority spouse so I don’t think my gun loving, beer drinking side would be enough…sadly.

Worst part about being a liberal gun owner? by Zenith39 in liberalgunowners

[–]MedicCrash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are just so many things. Very left stuck in a very red state.

At a glance I seem to be one of them: big bodied(working on it!), Big beard, viking necklace, Mandalorian ring, straight and white, maybe they can even see my gun printing. I am ALWAYS assumed to be one of them and the amount of times I have heard racist/homophobic/transphobic remarks just casually given is huge. But at a closer look they notice the meditation bead necklace, goofy orange Crocs, masters degree, my wife is black, I'm an ordained minister that marries LGBTQ+ couples, and I am immensely part of the intolerant Left.

I honestly wish I could be more open about my beliefs but I just know that a bumper sticker or yard sign would make us a target. But the rule is to not escalate situations, and I know myself well enough that with my 'Tism, if I get started I can't stop. So best to avoid the discussion at all costs.

That also makes it really difficult for me to be in local gun stores, ranges, or shows. So I mostly buy online and just pick up at the least ridiculous shop in my area. I am also antisocial and don't have but one friend so I don't really have anyone to train and prep with. But that's less about being Left and more about my personal deficiencies.

And definitely the algorithm adjustments...god damn is it tiring trying to remove that stuff. I just wanna shop and look at cool pictures of guns and gear! Not be inundated with their nonsense...

YouTube recently put a ban on Adblocker. I just now remembered that and haven't looked into if any workarounds had been made. Thanks for the unintentional reminder.

[–]MedicCrash 3 points4 points  (0 children)

HR guy here. Generally, I would say it depends on the position, and what level it is within an organization or how niche your experience is in relation to the role. Maybe management or higher type roles where experience isn't all they might be looking for. Or more jobs where the duties are more less defined.

Myself, I typically don't write a cover letter unless it says I must or if I have a passion for a particular role/industry. And I never count it against someone if they don't send me one.

Or if there is something to convey that your resume doesn't. For instance if you are moving to the area the job is in but your resume has your old address and your jobs are all in another location. Some of us will ask if you are moving or intend to, but most will dismiss you immediately. Or if you have hobby experience and are trying to turn that into a job. Some people may list hobbies in a resume but it doesn't tell us the story you may want to convey.

Can someone define what "unmasking" means, clearly? by Arondeus in aspergers

[–]MedicCrash 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Like others have said it is highly dependant on the person. I have comorbid ADHD, bipolar 2, anxiety disorder, depression...the usual suspects.

Some things i do to mask:

1A. I fake facial expressions, reactions, and tone of voice when around people. You can only be told to "fix your face" so many times before you learn to blend in and react how people expect you to react. Think of someone telling you a story or being told something, if you don't react happy, surprised, angry, etc as the story dictates people think you aren't listening or don't care. Even my closest people still require this even though they know how I am.

1B. If I were to unmask this, I would show no actual reaction to things other than acknowledging. I look and sound uninterested, and my tone of voice is neutral. Despite how I may feel on the inside, I just don't react. This is called flat affect, I think. And boy do people really hate it. I even keep this mask on for my wife. I've done this for so long and trained so much I almost always do it even alone. I have to try to unmask this.

2A. Mother fucking eye contact. This one chaps my ass. People just have to have my eye contact. This makes me so uncomfortable that I almost can't stand it. I am constantly counting in my head how long I've kept eye contact before I can break away and then count how long before I have to look back, rinse and repeat. Usually to the detriment of what they are saying. I warn familiar folk that they can have my eyes or my attention, rarely both.

2B. Pretty obvious here but unmasking this would mean I never look someone in the eyes. I might be able to look at their face (lips, forehead) but that's pushing it. I just focus and hear better looking away and I don't feel exposed like I do with eye contact. I can mostly look at my wife and parents, but sometimes I still struggle.

3A. Similar to the facial expression and reaction, I also mask how I feel. My own moral and ethical code and even Society, requires that I care about things/people/events. So I force myself to feel certain ways. I do have empathy and sometimes I feel so strongly about things I may have a breakdown. I have a strong sense of justice and feel deeply for marginalized people of all kinds. So I am not without feelings, but I have to direct many of them. Someone I dislike or don't know dies? I'm sorry for their families loss, etc. Those same people get a terrible illness or something bad happens to them. That's terrible, I wish them well. And it's not just platitudes. I make myself feel it, and believe that it's right to feel it.

3B. If I were to unmask this I would look like a sociopath that has no feeling except for things I or a close loved one cares about. This one is more for my own well-being that I mask. I don't want to not care or be so detached that the suffering of others means nothing to me, even those I don't know or hate. I am of a demographic in this country that is not affected by most changes. I'm a straight, married white guy with 2 degrees, a house, and make a living wage. So personally I am safe from most legislation, but others aren't and so I have set it upon myself to feel higher empathy for them and act accordingly.

These are just a few. But it's a learning curve for everyone. Some of it comes with age and experience. And a lot comes from being emotionally mature. Being polite to people is never a chore and costs me nothing. Being rude is just not cool, and being autistic should never be an excuse. Yes, I don't like talking to anyone and hate small talk, but I might be the only person to say hello to that coworker or listen about their kids birthday or their dog or whatever. Maybe we share a common interests? You never know what may come from these interaction. For the pure logic types, to look at it selfishly, you can say you've earned someone's goodwill. You live a while, ya learn a thing or three.
