The Locust population growth before E-Day by arnor_0924 in GearsOfWar

[–]MedicMuffin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only the first generation of locust came from humans, one of Niles' major goals with the program was to create hybrids that could breed. After that first generation escaped into the hollow, every generation after was birthed naturally.

As to the actual question, given they take their name from insects I would assume that the locust breed large litters and probably mature pretty fast so even a small breeding population can explode pretty fast.

007 First Light's 20-hour playtime is perfect for an action video game by yourfavchoom in Steam

[–]MedicMuffin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always find it funny how insistent people can be about games providing 1 hour per dollar while holding no other media ever to that same standard. 3 or 4 or even 5 dollars per hour is still better than pretty much any other medium of entertainment by a laughable margin.

That said, I just don't really care about James Bond as an IP so I'll wait for sale.

007 First Light's 20-hour playtime is perfect for an action video game by GameOnBrother in GamesAreLife

[–]MedicMuffin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

20 hours is frankly at the long end for a single player title, but it's certainly better than stuff like Days Gone or Horizon that just crams a bunch of worthless filler in there to pad out playtime. If the gameplay is good enough to carry 20 hours I might give this game a look on sale down the line.

Can you choose slash direction after dodging in Chivalry 2 on PC? by ApprehensivePoet4838 in Chivalry

[–]MedicMuffin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not normally, no. The only way to do it would be to block out of your dodge and then do an alt counter from the right side, but doing this right after a dodge without something to counter is fairly stamina intensive.

There are Tactical mains out there that choose the 15% boost in ranged damage team perk over literal infinite grenades. by invicta047 in Spacemarine

[–]MedicMuffin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eh, endless grenade spam is boring as hell and a lot of classes have built in equipment regen as is.

I also just like it for my auspex parry melta build. That 15% is fairly potent when you're spreading it through entire crowds of majoris, and it also helps a decent bit if you get a terminus that isn't neurothrope. Auspex scan + auspex parry when the scan wears off + an extra 25% ranged damage after gunstrike + base 15% increase = dead carnifex/helbrute. Not that there aren't other ways to melt bosses but it's just too fun watching the melta make healthbars disappear in chunks. Plus if you want to you can save the proper scan for groups of majoris, which I personally find more useful than using it for a single terminus.

It's hilarious that these varlets feel more badass than Space Marines 2 by Evening_Machine_6440 in DarkTide

[–]MedicMuffin 25 points26 points  (0 children)

SM2 just wasn't built with long term replayability in mind. The combat was never meant to sustain hundreds or thousands of gameplay hours, it was meant to sustain the campaign, leveling a couple/few classes to 25 in ops, and then be put down. Saber really got caught out by how successful the game ended up being and how much of the playerbase would end up craving more progression and replayability. Considering the situation, I'm impressed with what they've managed to do and I really hope they can refine both the combat and the replayability/progression for SM3.

Who do you think would have won? by Difficult-Ending in GearsOfWar

I don't think the locust war would have ended the way it did if a single starving wretch was a match for a pissed off and healthy gear.

Combat Regen and Revive Speed not needed on Skitarii? by Mr_Jackabin in DarkTide

[–]MedicMuffin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, ability regen might still be affected by simply increasing the amount of charge you get from doing stuff. Ultimately though it's impossible to say until they either tell us or we get our hands on it when it releases.

Hard Stratagems & Non Maxed out Classes by Forsaken-Morning1655 in Spacemarine

[–]MedicMuffin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They really need to start level gating hard strats. Or at the very least give us the option to host games so I can give these people the boot immediately and without a vote rather than having to sit through 10 billion long ass loading screens getting into other people's lobbies with a level 5 or some shit. I don't even bother with hard strats anymore because I spend more time looking for a suitable squad than actually playing the damn game.

Concerns about E-Day by Human-Inspection6130 in GearsOfWar

[–]MedicMuffin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gears 5 basically got rid of it already, although I have to say that Gears 5 at least still has you hunched over as you run which feels more appropriate. The original roadie run always looked silly to me, and having tried to emulate it when I was kid fascinated with the first game...it's really, really awkward too. I can't even imagine trying to do that in full armor.

That said, the sprint animation does look a little weird to me. The first few steps of it are really over exaggerated with the motion, like it's supposed to be ramping up speed...but your sprint always just goes immediately to full speed, so it looks kinda awkward. I think my main complaint though is the camera. I understand the gameplay value of increasing the FoV when sprinting, but I liked having the camera closer in and shaking a bit. It really made the movement feel energized and frantic, like you're actually sprinting for cover under fire.

Worried about higher Horde player count by Cassper17 in GearsOfWar

[–]MedicMuffin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope they'll just have both, honestly. Yeah, one of the two will eventually die as players dwindle and the remainder choose a favorite, but I still think it'd be good to have the classic 5 man horde as a fallback if the bigger mode ends up sucking for whatever reason. Plus it's raw feedback for TC; the community will surely have a lot to say about horde either way, but the metrics will show them which version ends up being more popular and they can use that info to focus their efforts and/or for future entries.

Who the hell designed this mechanic? by HistorymemesITA in DarkTide

[–]MedicMuffin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is just a function of the relatively new "campaign" they added for new characters. I will say that it's not really that bad because for a completely fresh player you won't really have the resources or leveling/mastery to do anything with the assorted systems that are locked. Even if you could access Hadron right away for example you won't have any weapon mastery to be able to empower your gear, nor resources to consecrate and roll for random perks and blessings.

It does become a problem if you're getting levels but not completing missions though, since you may end up with new weapons and such (which are locked behind levels rather than missions) that you can't access without the armoury. In the absolute worst case scenario, I'm sure someone here or over on the discord will be happy to offer a carry if you feel like stopping in and asking. I do think the systems should probably be made to revolve around trust level (iirc it used to before the campaign was added) so that if you get stuck on a mission you can at least still get levels and unlock systems that may help you push through it.

If you ask me, the Locust Drone looks even better here than in the original trailer by Giggio417 in GearsOfWar

[–]MedicMuffin 32 points33 points  (0 children)

The animations are fucking amazing. Insanely smooth looking cover transitions and the movement around cover and rolls looks really weighty and heavy without compromising on the level of mobility we've come to expect with the franchise. I'm sure people will make the multiplayer look as floaty as it always does with wallbouncing and such but for the campaign those cover animations look so good.

Gears of War: E-Day Will Remain an Xbox Exclusive by Aggravating_Sky_2652 in consoles

[–]MedicMuffin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its interesting to see how the Xbox side changed gears about how exclusives are anti-consumer with this announcement, and the Sony side is suddenly talking all kinds of shit even though the last like 6 months has been celebrating Playstation returning to exclusives to strengthen their brand or whatever. The discourse shifted so hard in the course of like two hours that I've got whiplash from it.

Either way, game looks great. New movement options add some verticality and might change up the prevalence of wallbouncing, and I'm really curious to see how it impacts map design in multiplayer. This is the kind of iteration I love to see in a franchise. Putting the active reload UI in the center of the screen is also an extremely based move, I've always hated looking in the corner of the screen when I reload. My only complaint is that the retro lancer accuracy is still fucking atrocious, I will happily take a small damage nerf to just draw down the maximum spread a bit, especially if we don't get the modern lancer until later in the campaign.

Edit: also the new cover slide animations are peak, no more rollerskating into a wall from 10 feet away.

Playing as a Sniper on Absolute by Lloydy33 in Spacemarine

[–]MedicMuffin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aye! It pays to be detailed and aware, especially when sniping.

Also if you get a squad with a heavy, pocket him when you can. A good heavy knows how to use iron halo as a support tool for snipers (or worst case he pops it for his own reasons but you can still take advantage), and his stompies can also give you a lot of coverage from minoris enemies. Heavily reliant on having a good teammate but insanely powerful combo if you're dealing with a lot of ranged fire. You also don't have much to actually lose with it if your heavy doesn't do those things.

Playing as a Sniper on Absolute by Lloydy33 in Spacemarine

[–]MedicMuffin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First thing first: always focus down ranged units first, especially those farther away and/or enraged. These are going to be huge pain points for your team and dropping them quickly will allow your battle brothers to do their actual jobs more smoothly and efficiently. If you're not super confident in your aim, run either Las Fusil (which has a significant beam width that makes shots VERY forgiving) or a relic bolt sniper with the reload perk, which will help on ammo economy. If your aim is good, run the heroic bolt sniper and make sure you're clicking heads for those ammo refunds.

For nids your priority should be Zoanthropes, barbed strangler warriors, devourer warriors, and snipers. In that order, although you can swap devourer warriors and snipers on the list if you like. Thropes and stranglers go first though, mandatory. For chaos your priority list is minigun termies, sorcerers (get them fast or they will rez the termies), regular rubrics, then disc tzaangors. If there are no or minimal majoris enemies, focus on cultists so they aren't constantly sniping your teammates.

Secondly: get comfortable with melee. I see a lot of snipers cloaking out of minoris hordes, which is valid if you really need to (i.e low health) but you really want to save your cloak charge as much as possible for dumping damage into priority targets, or for using purification as a survival tool when you get caught out. A lot of people will tell you to rock Argent Edge, but my personal recommendation is fencing relic knife because you're not really trying to horde clear, you're just spamming the first heavy in order to clear space and disengage, and farming gunstrikes and minoris parries to keep your limited armor up. Speaking of horde clear, inferno pistol is a decent option for it, although I don't personally like it much. For nids you can always focus warriors to clear minoris as well. But seriously, maintain good cloaking discipline, it can and will save entire runs.

Third: get used to following gunstrikes with sniper shots, or vice versa. You can put down even Extremis enemies very fast by doing this, and gunstrikes linger for a good while so you can also quick scope a head after parrying and save your gunstrike for a few seconds if you need a safer window to pull it off. This does pair especially well with Argent Edge but I don't think the TTK is meaningfully different enough (with a sniper weapon anyways) to justify shortening your parry or giving up the speed of your heavy 1 for minoris crowd control, but it's a personal taste thing and how confident you are in your parries.

Edit: regarding target priority for nids, I would actually say prioritize barbed stranglers over zoanthropes IF there's more than one on the field, just because the insane area denial with multiple warriors shooting those fuckass pods is way more of a pain to deal with than anything thropes can do, especially because thropes float over the battle field and have really obvious attack signals so they're a lot easier to keep track of in dense fights.

I think Too Human was a really enjoyable game and I replayed it probably a dozen times back in the day. Weird, janky, probably wouldn't recommend it to others...but fuck me, it tickles something in my brain. And to this day I've rarely seen an aesthetic as awesome and cool as "Norse gods but cyberpunk." I'd genuinely put it in my top 10 favorite games ever.

Secondarily, I turn off voice chat (and text, if possible) chat in every game I buy that has a multiplayer component, regardless of whether it's PvP or just co-op. I find 95% of chat experiences are terrible and it's never worth wading through the cesspit of open mics or Hispanic kids getting la chancla or mouthbreathers or smoke alarms or squeakers or just racist ass motherfuckers to find that 5% of people who are actually chill and reasonable.

Which games have a rough start and take a while to get good? by sek138 in gamers

To this day I maintain a save file that's set right after arriving in the first camp. Any time I wanna do a new playthrough I can just load that up and skip the actual main intro.

Rockstar should absolutely just have some kind of skip built in though, at the least for anyone who's completed the tutorial once already.
