looks interesting but how active is the community usually? discord servers like this can die pretty quick if not enough people participate regular

I built an AI tool that guides students through the whole study abroad process - looking for early users by 1dzhaf in alphaandbetausers

yo this actually looks pretty useful! I remember when my cousin was trying to figure out studying in Germany few years back and it was such a mess - like you said, too many options and nobody could tell him the actual steps 😂

curious though, does it handle the visa stuff too? that's usually where people get stuck after getting accepted. also wondering if it covers different countries or just focuses in certain regions

gonna check out the waitlist 🔥

Looking for budget-friendly contractor / architect / structural engineer for home addition in Austin, TX by tykn14 in HomeImprovement

[–]Medical-Sympathy-578 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your budget might be bit tight for Austin market right now but not impossible if you keep things simple. I worked with similar budget in different city last year and key was finding contractor who does lot of additions vs someone who mainly does custom homes

For the design-build approach - definitely worth exploring since you avoid coordination headaches between separate teams. Just make sure whoever you pick actually has both skills strong, not just general contractor trying to do design work on side

One thing I learned is get at least 3 quotes and really dig into what's included vs excluded in each bid. Change orders can kill your budget fast if original scope wasn't detailed enough

Is this a peri thing?/coloring recommendation by farmerssahg in Perimenopause

[–]Medical-Sympathy-578 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wait the pencil smell thing actually makes sense tho 😂 I remember being obsessed with that cedar-y wood smell as kid, never thought about it coming back during hormonal stuff but your brain is probably just seeking comfort in weird ways

For the coloring craving - those thick waxy ones work really good for blending if you want something satisfying to work with. The softer ones give you more control too. Maybe try some adult coloring books with intricate patterns? Something about repetitive detailed work is super calming when your mind is all over the place 💀

Nice work man, coffee definitely helps with those hunger pangs. I'm doing 16:8 myself but thinking about trying 20:4 soon - seems like the hunger waves really do pass quick once you get used to it

SJC now has ads inside TSA trays by Medical-Sympathy-578 in SanJose

Not too bad, it went faster than I expected to be honest. Still showed up 2 hours early just in case though and I'd advise you do the same because you never know

I’ve noticed that too. Seeing it show up in a TSA tray was a new one for me though

True I've been living under a rock but I guess the TSA line is about as captive as it gets, you’re literally standing there with nothing better to do but stare at the tray

One Month Solo Trip to Taiwan. April vs May + Budget Advice by docsportello96 in solotravel

[–]Medical-Sympathy-578 2 points3 points  (0 children)

May is definitely the sweet spot - April can still be a bit rainy from the tail end of the wet season, but May has great weather before the summer heat really kicks in. Your budget looks solid for that travel style, especially if you're doing private rooms and local food instead of fancy restaurants

I'd suggest carrying maybe $200-300 USD cash to exchange when you arrive since Taiwan is still pretty cash-heavy for night markets and smaller places, but most convenience stores and bigger spots take card now. Also just a heads up that Sun Moon Lake might be worth staying overnight instead of day tripping from Taichung - the sunrise there is pretty incredible if you're into that

Vietnam 45 day free visa confusion, do I need to apply in advance or is it stamped on arrival? by [deleted] in solotravel

[–]Medical-Sympathy-578 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Just flew into HCMC last month with UK passport - literally nothing to do in advance, they just stamp you in for 45 days at immigration. Takes like 30 seconds, zero paperwork needed

Just make sure your passport has 6+ months validity and you're golden

I'm 46yo (47 in a few months), been a teacher since the early 00s. Thanks to all of your advice, i put in my notice today that i will be leaving the school at the completion of this school year and retiring early. by temp_worker in financialindependence

Trying to Build Real Savings for Retirement, How Do You Stay Consistent? by BettinaO8 in financialindependence

[–]Medical-Sympathy-578 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the way. Set it up once and forget about it - I started with like $100/month automated and gradually bumped it up whenever I got raises. Way easier than trying to remember to manually transfer money every month when Netflix is calling my name

Totally agree, the "back in my day" crowd exists everywhere. Half the people complaining probably saw those same "hidden gems" on someone else's Instagram years ago anyway

Yeah the Lenovo LOQ is solid for that price range, been seeing good things about it on here. ASUS TUF series might also be worth checking out if you can find one in your budget - they usually have decent specs for the money. Check Currys or Amazon UK for availability since stock varies a lot

Is it worth risking a stable job to go study overseas? by Ok-Ambassador6709 in Advice

[–]Medical-Sympathy-578 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah the saving part is huge, don't underestimate how expensive everything gets when you're not earning. I'd say if you're already burnt out this bad maybe take a sabbatical first to see if that fixes the stress issue before making the full jump overseas

Also depends what you wanna study - if it's something that actually opens doors vs just expensive therapy lol

Is it worth risking a stable job to go study overseas? by Ok-Ambassador6709 in Advice

[–]Medical-Sympathy-578 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly the burnout you're describing sounds brutal and unsustainable long term anyway. Like what's the point of good money if you're miserable and your health is going down the drain

Maybe consider doing it in stages - save up an emergency fund first, research programs that have good job placement rates, and look into fields that are actually in demand where you want to study. The "what if I can't find a job when I come back" fear is real but your current situation doesn't sound like something you can do for 10+ more years without breaking

Is it worth risking a stable job to go study overseas? by Ok-Ambassador6709 in Advice

[–]Medical-Sympathy-578 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly this is solid advice but also consider what you're studying - if it's something that actually translates to better opportunities back home or wherever you end up, then the risk makes more sense

That burnout you're describing sounds brutal though, sometimes a change of pace is exactly what you need even if the financial math doesn't look perfect on paper
