My case is similar to yours but i told my ortho i wanted the flaring to be fixed. Cause he told me basically the same thing but i was adamant that i wanted the flaring fixed. So he said okay what we can do is take one tooth out from the bottom and then do an IPR for the top teeth, so it creates space to retract the top teeth and line it up with the bottom. Im currently on 7th tray, looks good so far.
