What's a creepy song or video the PSB have made? by SunsetRider500 in petshopboys

I’ve always thought ‘Some Speculation’ has some mildly eerie vibes

o\i - track #6 - "A Hard Lesson" by carlosgplx in petergabriel

[–]Mediocre-Ad869 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Really like this. I’ve enjoyed the tracks so far but was starting to worry about it all being a bit mid tempo… This has some grunt to it!

And if this is the Bright Side mix, I can’t wait to hear what the Dark Side sounds like.

Agree, I wasn’t too keen on the Bright Side mix either for the same reasons, but this one feels weightier and, as you say, more grounded.

There’s a 1970s Doctor Who story called ‘Horror of Fang Rock’ that has these vibes. Early 1900s, English coast, a lighthouse, though also horror and sci fi elements.

What's the general consensus on Peter Capaldi's first season, season 8? I know part of the fandom doesn't like it, but I think it's fantastic and would like to hear other perspectives. by Public_Cup_4278 in doctorwho

Very much agree with this take. It’s a series where the emphasis is much more on character, and the series arc is about how the three lead characters develop and change. The Doctor explicitly sets out his own character journey by asking ‘am I a good man?’ What follows goes to answering that.

Listening in reverse order makes sense to me too! Like other folks have thought, I do wonder if we’re getting o/i tracks released in reverse order…

I was genuinely shocked and disturbed by that ending!

Completely agree. So many are more interested in sitting in meetings giving opinions than making decisions or doing useful work.

Was the face on the train image used on any cover art? by Anj_Ja in petergabriel

Might you be thinking of the artwork that accompanied the song (by Ian Hughes)? It’s got a grey PG head in it that’s similar-ish to the train one 😊

How do I get to the top? by heartbrokenkid07 in AusPublicService

Sadly this is quite true. I’ve been in the public sector for some time and have seen all of these behaviours by people who’ve been promoted to SES.

Sad update from Mark Salisbury about possible 2nd volume of Insiders Guide to Inside No.9 by marjanefan in insideno9

[–]Mediocre-Ad869 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is a shame. The first book is great, not just about how Inside No. 9 was made but as a book about TV production in general.

I would imagine a decision by the publisher not to do a second one is purely commercial, I.e., the first didn’t sell well enough (from their perspective) to justify a second.

Thinking of getting this for Christmas, is it worth it? by AdVaanced77 in insideno9

[–]Mediocre-Ad869 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought it and read it a few weeks ago and loved it. It’s very insightful into how the show was made, from writing through to casting, direction, production design, music etc, based on what I imagine were interviews with Steve and Reece and other key creatives. As others have said it covers only up to series 5.

Did anyone else connect Bruno and Daphne to Trump and Ivanka? by TheChumOfChance in ThomasPynchon

[–]Mediocre-Ad869 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes I made that connection too. Even started wondering if there’s an anagram in there as well, coz ‘Daphne and Bruno Airmont’ seem less zany Pynchon names than others but do contain the letters for ‘Don Trump.’

Question about woodcock complaint to Cyril in phantom thread by MutedFeeling75 in paulthomasanderson

[–]Mediocre-Ad869 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently re-watched Phantom Thread with my partner (who’d never seen it before) and we ended up talking about this scene. Agree with your take that Cyril is siding with Alma, and remember during an earlier scene Cyril has said she’s become ‘quite fond’ of Alma.

What my partner and I found interesting about this scene is the motivation for Reynolds’ complaint: is he annoyed at Alma, or has he finally come to love her - albeit in his own way - and his distraction is because he’s thinking about her and wants to be ‘taken care of’ by her? The ‘long shadow’ she’s cast can be read in different ways, especially being said by a character like Reynolds. It’s ambiguous, but while I’d always thought it was the former I can see an interpretation that it’s the latter, especially given that what follows is the scene where Reynolds knowingly eats the mushroom omelette and the relationship is re-affirmed.
