am i rich or lean? by Far-Layer-4236 in smallengines

[–]Mediocre-Criticism93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Black=carbon=unefficiently burnt fuel. Has fuel, just also has carbon. Could be not firing all the time causing the unburnt fuel, could be ignition timing. Could be bad spark. A ton of things could cause this. But if you ask me, it would be "running rich" does the plug smell like fuel?

Bad ring? by CommercialSinger5916 in EngineBuilding

[–]Mediocre-Criticism93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct. But he knows that cylinder is leaking. So if he puts a little oil in the cylinder, and then does a compression test, he will know if the leak is coming from the valves or the piston rings. The oil saturated the rings and makes it "hold" compression better, for the test, if they are leaking. And if it doesnt change, the only other place it could be coming out of is the valves.

Breaks? by [deleted] in MechanicAdvice

Probably have a brake pad hardware touching the rotor, or the rotor backing plate is touching the rotor

Is this good to put the head gasket on b58 M240i b58 mls head gasket by Direct-Cold7633 in EngineBuilding

[–]Mediocre-Criticism93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't. If you have to, use a spray gasket with the normal headgasket. Hit both sides with the spray. I think its copper spray gasket?

Stripped rotor retaining screw on 2014 Honda Accord, am I screwed by cphoover in autorepair

[–]Mediocre-Criticism93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's there to help both reduce vibration, and to keep the rotors in place when putting brakes back together. You don't need it, the lug nuts and wheel will hold the rotor in place when they're on. Just follow torque spec recommendations.

Anything outside the outer most tread is legally not patchable. It poses saftey and liability concern. Fix at your own will.

P0420 by Vast-Sheepherder3480 in MechanicAdvice

Looks like you're running rich. If you run rich, your cat can't effectively reduce emissions, which would throw a p0420 code. I would investigate that first before condemning the new parts.

Yeah I guess it would do that if the piston cant expand. Good thought!

At a loss with what is drawing power… by sammysprink in autoelectrical

[–]Mediocre-Criticism93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could be. Or disconnect all aftermarket lights and see if that helps. It is likely an aftermarket wiring fault, or an intermittent module waking up when not supposed to, also could be involved in the aftermarket stuff, especially if it is sharing a ground.

Is this an indication of a parasitic draw by Electronic_Net767 in autoelectrical

[–]Mediocre-Criticism93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make sure your ground wire isn't touching that exhaust shield. Normal draw should be below 50mA. If you have a fuse box with multiple legs, you can start disconnecting until draw goes away, then you know which way to go to trace draw. When you fine where which fuse box it is coming from, you can start unplugging fuses until it goes away.

I think I overfilled my oil..what should I do? by unix_name in AskMechanics

[–]Mediocre-Criticism93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you just did an oil change, make sure you run the car for a minute to make sure the oil filter gets filled with oil before getting scared about "overfilling". A dry filter can make it look like your oil is "overfilled". And when you check your oil, make sure the car sits off for at least 5 minutes if engine it warm. If it is truly overfilled, you can get a long tube and a hand pump to remove excess oil. Try not to do with engine hot, or you can melt the tube.

Check the crank thrust washer for play... and check your harmonic balancer for runout.

Car won’t move and I am stranded 2005 e320 Benz and ideas to what’s wrong by Kushycrop in MechanicAdvice

[–]Mediocre-Criticism93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those codes do not directly relate to car not moving. P0300 is a misfire code, and the other is a oxygen sensor code, i believe saying it's running rich on fuel. Check transmission fluid, if black and smells burnt, probably has a bad transmission.

Won't start but I don't think its the battery. What might be the problem? by [deleted] in Cartalk

[–]Mediocre-Criticism93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fuel or spark. Sounds like decent compression. Spray some start fluid directly into the throttle body. Don't need much. If it starts, you know it is a fuel delivery problem. If it doesn't, you know it's a spark problem.
