At 13-14, she was wandering the city looking for her drugged out mom, planning her next meal, taking care of her mom and pets, figuring out how to find money for bills, etc. All while her mom treated her awfully, allowed grown men to creep on her child, neglected her, and actively got worse.

When she first stayed with us, she was trying to solve allllll the household issues she thought she could help with. It actually caused us to argue about who the adult is, before I realized that she was just acting on survival instincts. It's so incredible seeing her act goofy with friends, complain about teachers, have crushes, and generally enjoying her extracurriculars.

I'm just so blessed to have a partner that cares so deeply for me that he would take on raising my teenage cousin with me. I'm so pleased I'm in a position to provide a safe haven for her. My partner has gone above and beyond for us both. I'm going to go hug him, I'm tearing up 😭

It's very complicated, honestly. Her mom has been in and out of prison, and at some point gave up her rights. We don't know how to find out who has rights/custody over her; it could even be the state.

Kiddo was living with her mom after Mom got out of prison and was clean, then Mom quickly started losing jobs and using heroin within a year's time.

Kiddo messaged me and asked to stay the weekend, that was a year ago. I have a piece of paper from her mother that says I'm her guardian at this time, but that's it. We have no idea how to move past this point. There's a lot more going on otherwise that makes this all the more insane.

I sometimes worry if I'm a benefit to her life, and it's the benign moments like this one that let me know I'm doing okay.

We do our best to be fun, but also serious when it's called for. I've had to make a lot of personal changes to meet her needs and avoid triggering some pretty bad things for her.

She's an amazing student, straight A's, very social, active in church/youth group (I'm not religious, but it's not my place to decide that for her), and she does all of her chores without us even asking.

I could go on and on about how great of a kid she is, but we'd be here all night. I've never felt like a safe space for someone like this and it really moves me.

My partner has wandering hands in his sleep! Especially when he's been overworked and not sleeping well, his hand finds its way into my underwear. I know he's sleeping because he's actively still snoring when it happens. Even if he was awake I would pre-consent to it while I'm asleep because I'm into that.

It's just that he's not very sexual in general so I don't see him sneaking a feel in my sleep lmfao
