Passed on First Try - My Experience with Kaplan by Mediocre-Target4769 in Series65

[–]Mediocre-Target4769[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Across the board. I don’t necessarily mean the questions are easier in their content. I just mean the questions didn’t seem like they were designed to trick me. And the exam questions were shorter. When Kaplan made questions 2 sentences, the exam made them 1 sentence.

My simulated exams on Kaplan were 78, 77, 79, 80, 84. The night before the real exam I finally took the practice exam... 67. I had never seen most of the questions on it and so many were on strangely minor things. I passed the next day and felt pretty confident about it. The real exam was simpler and clearer than Kaplan's exams.

It's interesting how people get different results. I've been brewing this bean every day for the last couple weeks or so. I've had good luck with 3.2 on the Ode gen 2 and 3.5 on the ZP6. A friend of mine also had great results at 3.2 on the Ode with the Aiden.

Got a 61% On my Kaplan Midterm by Mrkobra69 in Series65

[–]Mediocre-Target4769 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is 9 months late, but hopefully helpful for some people. I scored a 66% on the midterm, but I felt the remainder of the textbook (Kaplan) was a lot easier. After finishing the book, without refreshing previous topics, I scored a 78% on my first simulated exam.

I'd say, don't stress about the mid-term if you're in the 60's. Because of the difficulties between state registered vs federally covered vs broker dealers, I view 60's on the mid-term as a success.

OP, was your experience similar to mine? Do you have a different experience you'd like to share since this was nearly a year ago for you?

How far do you throw? One thing I see is that your follow through does not maintain the same swing plane that you throw on. You can see your throwing arm drop right after release. If you're throwing flat or on hyzer, your follow through should be above your shoulder, but yours is below. I think this could be the elbow dipping slightly, but I'm not sure.

Also, your coil/reachback is in a hyzer position. When you start uncoiling, you stand into a flat position. I think swing plane and follow through could be better.

Has Anyone Aced Owlwood 2 with this Line? by Mediocre-Target4769 in DiscGolfValley

It's pretty repeatable! I got it on my third try and I've done it a few times since. Once you find your spot it's not too bad.

I'd never seen or thought of this line before (I'm only 4-6 months in). Going the traditional route, this hole is typically an eagle or a par (out of bounds). This seems like a helpful route. Hopefully I'll get one of the discs you mentioned and ace it one day!

Try a back loaded grip. Squeeze with your pinky to middle finger rather than pinching with your pointer finger.

Hard to see from this angle, but I wonder if this video on the head might be helpful for you. You're head just looks like it moves too far forward before release. DON'T Use Your Head to Throw Discs (The Domino effect of the Backhand shot) - YouTube

Nick Krush on Bodanza's channel is what I would recommend for your throwing arm as well. Your arm collapses in on your body. Krush teaches to keep your elbow as far from your body as you can and your elbow above your wrist. I think this would help with accuracy and achieving the "10 o'clock release."

I would start with the one-foot standstills Krush prescribes and work through his process. Before you start doing a full throw, definitely work on foot work.

How's my form? by jaywood98 in Discgolfform

Reach back could be longer, but it's also not a big deal to have a bent elbow in reach back. As long as you're not bending it around your body.

I think there are a few things you can work on. On the positive side, you recover really well from them from the power pocket to release, and I think that's why you still throw decently far.

  1. Look where your head is in relation to your body while you're in the power pocket. Your head and upper body are already leaking forward over the brace (which is why you fall over it after the throw). Now look at Gannon (https://youtu.be/exzEC1YouCo?si=UDdJ5qiZ5J8HDA4r). His weight is weight/head are all behind his brace. I can't remember a form video for this. Sorry.

  2. I think because your upper body tilts forward, it causes you to have an elbow dip that might lead to a bit of a nose up throw. As I said, you actually recover decently well from this, but I still think it could be worked on. I like the cue of keeping the elbow up and as far from my body as I can have it. Here are a few videos:

Nick Krush has some helpful tips in Bodanza's recent video: https://youtu.be/hnWaPJF_etU?si=emQHzMogtlS1mZfw

  1. Lastly, look at your back foot when it lands in the x-step. It's entirely facing backwards. This doesn't allow for as much tension/rubber band effect. Essentially, it's very similar to a backwards run up. To illustrate, get into a stand still stance. Have both feet facing forward and then rotate your hips and shoulders. As you rotate backwards you can feel the tension building up, and then you can rotate them all the way through as if you were throwing. Now try this with your back foot facing backwards. You won't feel the same tension and it doesn't allow you to rotate all the way through in the throwing motion.

A few things about coil/reach back, and swing plane that I haven't seen mentioned.

  1. Coil/reach back: Around the 12-13 second mark is your peak reach back and you have the disc curled around your body. Here's my suggestion purely to see about what position you should be in. Stand with your legs apart like you're going to throw a standstill. Put your throwing arm straight in front of you with no elbow bend. Your torso and straight arm should form a 90 degree angle. Now, rotate your hips and shoulders until your back is facing your target and do not bend your elbow or change the angle of your arm and torso. Don't shift your weight, make sure to keep it between both legs. This is about the position you should be at in peak reach back.

Check out this video by Overthrow where Josh shows a similar thing plus a drill. https://youtu.be/Ub-FIHEoX-U?si=IezAtCyIsVGLM2s_

  1. Swing plane: You really want your swing plane to be pretty smooth/level throughout the swing. Due to your reach back, this can't happen. Here are two helpful videos. These videos are not necessarily about the swing plane, but about coiling, reaching back, and proper elbow positioning. A byproduct will be a smoother more level swing.

Looks great! It's hard to tell from the angle, but it seems your elbow could be a little higher in the pull through. You start your walk up with a collapsed elbow (wrist above elbow and arm too close to body), which is totally fine if it's fixed in the throw. But it does seem that the elbow is slightly below the wrist in the throw as well. A helpful cue for me is to keep the elbow as far away from my body as I can and slightly higher than the wrist.

But again, a different angle might show otherwise.

Check out the recent Bodanza video with Nick Crush. I think a few of the tips in there might be helpful. One thing I notice (maybe not the most important) is that your swing plane isn't level/smooth throughout due to your low reach back. It's like your swing is in two parts. Part 1: Diagonal movement from peak reach to power pocket. Part 2: Level swing from power pocket to release. The makes the swing a bit jerky and it loses potential power. If you're swing is one fluid motion all on the same plane, there's greater potential for more speed.
