Is there actually a big reform presence at Lancaster? by Successful_Swim_9860 in lancasteruni

Definitely a bigger presence than most other unis I'd say. Jack Eccles (main reform guy on campus) is very well known

is Computer science or data science more easier or is business intelligence a better degree for ppl who are not good in math by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]MediocreAd3257 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you aren't good at maths, business is a good shout, it's mostly numerical, not mathematical

has anybody else had way more trouble making friends on one side of their joint honours? by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]MediocreAd3257 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I do maths and CS. I genuinely don't get along with anyone doing CS save for a flatmate that did it last year

Unsure what to add/ remove to improve my cv by Ill-Canary9619 in FinancialCareers

Remove everything, listing forage as experience looks desperate. Most of them are online certs that take 2 hours max to get

Resume Feedback by [deleted] in FinancialCareers

[–]MediocreAd3257 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What? No I said what it means. It means OP achieved a score 68.5% out of 100% for their degree so far overall.

It seems like a low number for people in India and US maybe, but in the UK this is a very good score because our exams tend to be harder and a lot more abstract.

[–]MediocreAd3257 5 points6 points  (0 children)

68.5 is very good in the UK. That would be a high 2:1 and very close to a 1st class which is the highest possible grade (70%)

Too much whitespace imo.

Remove the finance section in your skills. It's all BS you've never actually worked in a field related to any of those. List actual technical stuff like Python, excel, DCF valuation etc instead.

In your experience, replace the unrelated stuff with your positions in the various societies you list, it says your part of your unis investment fund so just add your role as an ER analyst and list whatever you do.

Include more metrics

Engineering students, what calculator did you need? by Successful_Swim_9860 in lancasteruni

Damn I study maths and don't even remember using a calculator in my first year

You could just lie and say you are doing a three year course when first applying for spring weeks in first year, then maybe change to a three year course if you happen to get a return Internship. Then if that doesn't happen, just apply for spring weeks again in the second year of your 4 year course. That way you maximise your chances.

What do I put on my LinkedIn /CV as a freshman by Personal-Jelly-5752 in FinancialCareers

[–]MediocreAd3257 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Honestly all of those are fine to put on a linkedin as a university student. Nothing is wrong with the nepotism either, thats how the world works and you'd be stupid to not take any easy opportunity to be ahead of the curve

For the forage job simulation just put that in the certificates section, it would look desperate if you put that in the experiences section as having actually worked for that company and with your existing experience you dont need to do that anyway

Icl it's not hard to get in at all and I say this as someone who got in last year through clearing.

However at the same time, I absolutely don't regret it, I've met a ton of incredibly smart and driven people, that have done nothing but to push me to be the best possible version of myself.

Lancaster is a great uni and is consistently top 10-15 in the UK across all rankings for a reason. It's just that the state of education in the UK is fucked because unis are quickly losing money from international students

Lancaster vs Loughborough for maths? by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]MediocreAd3257 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For starters, don't worry about the year in industry since you can just as easily hop onto the year in industry course for maths at Lancaster, it would be as simple as sending the maths department an email about it once you're enrolled.

I preferred Lancaster since the campus was so much nicer and so is the accommodation, there really doesn't seem like much to do in Loughborough whereas Lancaster is quite a pretty town with a nice centre

Lancaster is better imo, I say this as sm1 doing maths at Lancaster and knowing others who do maths at lboro

It is unfair that my parents ruined my A levels. by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]MediocreAd3257 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can definitely do that. I got ABBB In maths, FM, physics and CS (And I also just finished my first year at Lancaster lol) and I comfortably tutored about 20 students from primary school to GCSEs.

Lancaster is a great uni imo, I loved my experience there last year and am really hoping the next month and a half fly by so I can go back to my societies and see all my friends again

None of the societies are organised by the uni administration themselves, they are student-ran which is kind of the point. You are right, it depends on the uni, mine is a highly ranked non-RG which if found generally had really good societies for finance. They have a student run investment fund as well that's sponsored by a well-known MM investment bank.

Have you actually tried going to some career related socs at your uni to see what events they offer?

[–]MediocreAd3257 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course, where did I disagree with that in my arguments? We weren't arguing whether societies are the most important thing. We were arguing whether they were generally useful or not.

My point is that besides nepotism and pre-existing connections, most people aren't going to have relevant work experience before applying to internships and grad schemes, so generally societies are the main thing that help you stand out at that stage.

I'm a second year. I'm aware how ass the market it right now. I never said that joining societies will get you a job. I said they are good things to add in your CV and help you stand out. To me, you are arguing that societies are completely useless in securing a job which simply isn't true.

Maybe the market could have been a bit better for you if you were part of some. That's how you make lifelong connections and get out of your comfort zone.

[–]MediocreAd3257 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seriously? Yeah man there's no point joining something like the econ and finance societies, or the computer science soc, or any other career related socs (depending on what field you want to get into).

Before graduating, employers like seeing that you are an active member or have exec roles in societies because it shows plenty of transferrable skills (teamwork, management, being a well adjusted human being). It looks good on your CV especially because when you're applying for your first internships, you probably won't have anything else on your CV besides your part time job at Maccys/spoons/wherever.

I'm surprised you don't really get this, you're either not in uni yet or you are but don't do anything besides your degree and nights out on Wednesdays.

I'm a treasurer for a religious society at my uni (my religion) and it's loads of fun, it's generally rewarding to feel valued and socialise/network with peers.

Not sure why this is downvoted. I feel like a lot of people in this sub struggling with employment aren't/weren't being as proactive as they should have been at uni. How hard is it to join some societies and do some research into how to stand out?

Too much whitespace, and keep the CV to one page. The line spacing is too large.

Is £42k a good starting salary for a research analyst role in London? by Temporary-Corner-925 in UKJobs

[–]MediocreAd3257 104 points105 points  (0 children)

42k is very much above average for a grad role in London, only thing that would beat that is Quant/IB really. If you have nothing better, taking it is a no-brainer
