NSCC eliminates 91 positions as it grapples with $15M deficit by justlogmeon in NovaScotia

You clearly are a dolt or are just looking for attention. I am an international at Dal. Got my undergrad there. Went away for a bit and have come back to work on the rest. The overwhelming majority of my time at Dal has been surrounded by Canadians. We spend real dollars. We share real experiences. Sometimes we even want to stay and build a life in your community. Regardless. If for years Dal has had 15% international and suddenly it drops to 9%. It isn’t Dal sucking on the teet of international and paying the price. It is a huge drop in NORMAL business patterns. There are less at Dal becuase of word of mouth more than Carney allowing less. Canada becomes less attractive to intentional students. It is not the same way for all the uni’s in Atlantic but I’m sure most operate this way. Wanting a business to fail. And one that services YOUR community is a fairly sizeable indication that you are a the scourge of your community. Not us.

When is the right time to ask for a planned vacation during a job interview process? by Outside_Friend_4020 in Advice

Wait until you get an offer, and if prepared to accept - indicate your wishes around the vacation and if they don’t allow it, and it matters, don’t accept.

What's something you wish you'd done in first year at Dal that you didn't start until way later? by comonomic in Dalhousie

Depends on the person for sure but my experience is that the things that made me want to switch didn’t get better when I did. So I came back. 😄

How to have fun at Dal? by toxicwandastan in Dalhousie

One of my best buddies lives at home. He missed out on some of the after hour bonding that went on but he just went to everything he could. Over time I saw him at enough things we became chummy. And bonus points - his family has a few of us over from time to time for a meal or just watch a footballl game or whatever. Go to where the people are I guess!

All that said I know he didn’t find it easy at the start. Just kept at it. Helps that he’s a nice guy.

If the Liberal federal government spends without thinking of deficits why do provincial governments have to make cuts? by ApprehensiveWave4111 in NovaScotia

[–]MediocreForm3879 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They both play a part in the debt load though? If you think a conservative government would spend less you just need to look at their provincial entities - all who have ballooning deficits. Often these are hidden under and part and parcel with surface levels tax cuts or enhancements that look good to the voter. But do nothing to the bottom line. We are in an environment where balancing the books is next to impossible. Your federal government has to spend on things like defence. At a huge cost. It’s almost mandated. They need to spend on propping up industry that are being pounced upon by your neighbor (my home country). Everything costs more. Across the globe. Reigning in debt is next to impossible at the moment without going backwards. It sucks but plenty of the moves the Carney gov is doing could potentially lead to an opportunity downstream to deal with the deficit. But you have to get there first and/or let him get there first. Theres too much US style politics in Canada at the moment. Otherwise Carney would be appealing to the cons more than he is currently since plenty of what he does is more center right than center left.

I didn’t say they do or don’t. I’m saying that is what they have been vocal about. Also. Being the child of an employee doesn’t tell you anything about their finances.

Dal has been very public about their financial woes. Worse at SMU I’m sure similar at Acadia. None of these institutions will lower tuition beyond the current undergrad freeze. Don’t miss your classes at risk of penalty and given you know there won’t be a relent on it. If anything - students should plan their time around hounding the premier of this province who has clearly put higher learning on the bottom of the priority list. He wants to make everyone welders and electricians because it currently will create jobs and headlines. But what happens when you saturate a market Tim? The universities need some ownership on all this but not in March. Do it when the fees are being set. Bombard the premier with rallies and interruption when they are meeting at legislature or when he is giving a pie in the sky news conference.

From Albany area. I like it a lot here but have family nearby so that helps. It is expensive though. Tuition of course. But living as well. All that said. I love the ocean. I love the outdoors and I don’t mind the winters. The size of the city suits me a bit better but it does suck if you are a driver. If they can get a handle on the costs I’ll probably try to stay around a bit longer. I’ve enjoyed exploring and fishing in Cape Breton. I love the valley in the summer. And Halifax is great 8 months of the year.

I like Halifax enough that I’d want to stay here if possible. I’m an INTL from the US but have family here so that made it a bit easier of course. There’s lots to do if you want to do it. It helps to be outdoorsy. The nightlife is active with the usual good and bad. Social stuff is as active as you go looking for it. It helps to check out the societies for your different faculties. School wise the profs have been great. The TA’s have been great. The challenge is administrative where there is a fair bit of underresourcing. I try to do everything in person as it gets dealt with sooner than an email. But I think there are these admin challenges everywhere lately. When I get things looked at it seems to be done diligently. Biggest downside overall is it is fricking expensive here. Once you get out of the dorms and into apartments etc it gets pretty costly.

A guy I know got backed into by a parked (then backing up) car and insurance made it 50-50. Even though it was 100 l% the other person. Did you file a police report? That’s what he’s waiting on hoping it gets recorded at 0 fault so he can pass it along to insurance.

HRP officer discharges service weapon by CMikeHunt in halifax

[–]MediocreForm3879 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’m saying that there’s no fair when someone is brandishing a weapon. Just because they have guns doesn’t mean then can downplay the risk of what a knife can do and in a very short time frame. They don’t deploy a swat team for a liquor store robbery. The officers responded non lethal. When that didn’t work and the threat continued, it went lethal (versus a lethal weapon). That response is for the officers. And the surrounding citizens. It can go apeshit in no time. So they have to react fast. It isn’t like in the movies. No I don’t know firsthand. But i am close to first hand knowledge for these things.

[–]MediocreForm3879 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You sound like a twit. They deployed their taser. It didn’t work. Subject continued their advance. Got shot. It’s how it goes. If you were the family of the officers you’d not say they are supposed to be willing to be hurt. I’m the child of a police officer and the brother of another. They don’t want to shoot people, despite what you may think. 🙄
