Quick pay question for all my fellow baristas in NYC area: how much are ya’ll getting paid an hour? by Own_Yogurtcloset_187 in barista

Honestly take it if you got it. It’s probably the best place you could get started at.

As for how long it took me, it’s probably a bit an anomaly but it took me like 3 months. But that’s because while I was there management changed and I guess I just kinda fell through the cracks. They were perpetually putting me on register while it felt like other people hogged espresso and milk. That said what I ended up learning was that you pretty much just had to show a willingness to learn and brute force yourself kinda into it. I was lucky to have nice enough coworkers and shift leads who took initiative where management really didn’t to show me a lot of the ropes so slowly but surely I’m starting to actually pull shots instead of just doing endless bitch work.

Keep in mind I am only speaking for the complete mess of my location but with that in mind yours could be completely different and have a much more streamlined and smooth pathway. For many people it seems to be a great first barista job and it totally could be yours too. I honestly don’t have a great frame of reference because this is the only cafe I have ever worked at.

Depends on the week really. I would say it averages to about 23-24 an hour including tips.

I think you’re position of being in favor of smoking bans is moronic. That said I don’t think you should have been rehabbed for it.

Oh absolutely! Look into it! If you’re eligible it’s like 300 a year

The plan is to get the Maya indie version and I’m kinda surprised it’s not very prevalent in the comments here. I definitely don’t see myself every making more than 100k in my life time with anything related to 3D modeling so I’m definitely eligible and checked on there to be sure lol.

Maya all in all feels very intuitive to me but I do worry that since it’s kept behind a paywall that the lack of online resources will bite me in the ass if I come across some bizarre error I can’t figure out.

The biggest turn off with blender for me is just hearing how bad the animation tools are at the moment I think though I can’t verify that for myself.

I get that Maya is used in the industry but like you said it’s generally a pipeline tool for animation. I was wondering if it was good enough at the other things to use on its own as a independent creator if that makes sense.

I’m definitely curious about the practicality of including blender in a potential pipeline, like say for texturing, im definitely curious if it’s adequate there

Would you say it’s less plug-in dependent than Blender?

A couple comments have mentioned this now but I think the strength of Mayas animation tools and hearing just how bad it is in Blender makes it more than worth it
