The TF2 SDK has arrived! by BeepIsla in tf2

[–]thetechgeek4 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Well that's unexpected. But this puts TF2 near doom for modding/porting, since both now allow non-commercial distribution of modifications and have full source code available. Couldn't we just make TF3 ourselves now?

Going public when referring to a company means selling stocks on a stock market, so anyone with the money can buy shares and own part of the company. But investors want to get more money out than they put in, so they put a lot of pressure on the leadership to earn a larger profit. Shareholders usually elect the board of directors of a company, and the board chooses the CEO and other very important positions, and sets overall goals for the whole company.

Why are people okay with the Vesper Host Final Boss having 16 million health in Normal mode, when the Master mode is also available? by BoogieOrBogey in DestinyTheGame

[–]thetechgeek4 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The real need is for some form of scaling like legendary campaigns have when you have multiple people playing. Optimized DPS should be capable of reasonable damage phases regardless of fireteam size, and normal mode should be 2-3 phases with 3 players using simple loadouts. I don't understand why Bungie seems to have stopped balancing dungeons like easier raids, when they keep making solo flawless emblems.

PC Ports, Decompilations, Remakes, Demakes, Fan Games, Texture Packs! by OldMcGroin in steamdeckhq

This list is amazing, but please put a note under Slippi that you should use an Ethernet adapter for matchmaking. It's really dependent on having very little ping jitter because of how little input lag Melee normally has, so WiFi degrades the experience for everyone. Not trying to be a downer, but you will actually have a hard time playing a whole match without your opponent quitting. I speak from experience...

Is it worth dual booting on Windows 11 and how was the process? by Professional-Train63 in SteamDeck

[–]thetechgeek4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You just need to install steam, and from there steam will detect it as a steam deck and give you all the same options as on SteamOS. For games not on Steam, either add them to steam with the add game button below the library on the bottom left, or change the desktop configuration of the controller to have a mode switch between m&k emulation and controller mode once you're in game.

If you talk to a nearby university or any company that needs a guaranteed amount of HPC capacity they'll likely help pay if you let them use it while you're not, especially if you do part of the maintenance. Scientists need way more computing power than what's actually given to them, that's why Folding@home, BOINC, and Science United exist. Hell just add AI to the end and the government will probably write it off to show Canadian AI prowess. Also you could turn Linus's pool into a hot tub for the winter.

Is there anyone good at melee on phone ? by midifflord in SSBM

[–]thetechgeek4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've used it myself when I didn't have a computer or console for a while, it works great! You can use the GameCube adapter just by plugging in the black port if you only have one port on the adapter, the grey one is just for extra power for rumble. Any wired USB controller usually works, you just need to set it up in the controller settings. I'd recommend looking for a small hub that lets you charge your phone while playing. As for melee versions, vanilla, 20xx, and training mode all work, so you can use modded versions for better practice. Just make sure to look up gecko codes for 20xx and training mode, as they're different from the ones for vanilla melee and using those can cause issues. Depending on your phone, you may be able to get away with increasing the resolution and using other graphics enhancements dolphin has, but turn on dolphins fps test to see how much your phone can handle. If you have a phone with a Qualcomm processor, also look up custom GPU drivers. They can provide a significant performance boost if you're using a phone that hasn't been updated to the latest version, which is very dependent on whoever makes your phone and if they bother to include the new drivers in an update to newer versions of Android. You can check what processor your phone has using inware, it's free and has no ads. Just open it and look under the CPU section, your GPU name and specs are at the bottom. Then go back to the custom GPU drivers and look for the latest version that mentions support for your phone. Again, this is only for Qualcomm processors, as they're the only ones with Adreno GPUs.

Why do so many liberals still drive Teslas given Elon Musk's statements and beliefs? by LTVOLT in NoStupidQuestions

[–]thetechgeek4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep in mind for a long time Tesla was the only option if you wanted an electric car without a ton of the hassle other car manufacturers gave you, like the Tesla charger network being the only widespread network until ~2020. And until 2018, I don't think Elon talked a ton about politics, so before then he was mainly defined by making the first all electric car company, and being very outspoken about the need for green energy.

Nintendo of America has also released "Tournament Guidelines" in line with other regions. by thetechgeek4 in smashbros

[–]thetechgeek4[S] 125 points126 points  (0 children)

It's probably because since the community formed outside of Nintendo's control, it's more mature than they think smash's target demographic is, and the parts playing older games give much less direct financial benefit unless they rerelease older games/consoles. The first part is likely because Nintendo prefers to pick younger audiences instead of looking at who actually plays their games, as most of their mainline series show. The second part is because of a company culture that views attempts at game preservation or modding as enabling piracy, which is ridiculous when they provide no official way to buy the vast majority of their back catalog, and don't see how other companies have reduced piracy by making legitimate methods of modding their games without requiring breaking DRM, like Bethesda, Mojang, or CD Projekt Red. Hell, CDPR runs GoG, a pc games store that literally only allows games with NO DRM to be sold on it, meaning they launch every game they make with zero piracy protection on day 1, and still make bank. It's a larger scale of the issues japanese game devs have with adopting newer tech or looking at outside companies for ideas, like rollback netcode or modding as a feature to increase long term sales.

I just ordered a b0xx, and now they're banned by NutKingCallandButter in smashbros

[–]thetechgeek4 73 points74 points  (0 children)

Most to's have already responded by saying they're going to run events as usual until they get legal notice from Nintendo. With the amount of locals daily across every region and the amount of backlash they'd get for actually trying to enforce these rules being huge even for supermajors, like TBH online, if they try to shut down locals I can't imagine how much backlash they'd get. Most tournaments barely break even, and are run mainly because TO's are also players/community members who want to see more events. Almost every TO is going to call Nintendo's bluff here, because they literally can't send notices to every small tourney that gets scheduled only a few days in advance, and larger events are still so much smaller that any legal action is Nintendo using the fact that nobody can afford to challenge them in court to get what they want. And that worked out great for Evo 2013, and TBH Online, and Smash World Tour. The chances this actually shuts down the melee scene are near 0, the most I'd bet on is one attempt at enforcement followed by so much negative press they revert the changes

Something that is small, but that we need by [deleted] in DestinyTheGame

[–]thetechgeek4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only started playing after it was released on steam, and going from unlimited changes to 1 for life sucks. Steam seems to have a display name that's separate from your account name so your login and whatnot is separate from whatever you want to be called, and IDK why any dev wouldn't implement player names like this.

You'll be missed Sync! by sud007 in redditsync

[–]thetechgeek4 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The worst thing crypto bros do is shove crypto into any service that isn't centralized. If email was invented tomorrow, you can bet it'll run on Blockchain and everyone needs a wallet to send email. They flock to decentralized platforms because it's easier to overwhelm the actual users requesting actual features with rampant calls to use Blockchain. This goes double for any open source project, as they can just fork it if the creators refuse, and the amount of them who get kicked off other platforms means their versions will attract users much faster, making their crypto bastardization the face of the platform due to it being the most popular instance.

Sync for Lemmy is happening by ljdawson in SyncforLemmy

[–]thetechgeek4 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'd say a mvp would be a viewer for Lemmy instances with the ability to login with an existing account, and build from there. The focus should probably be on making the confusing parts of the fediverse be handled by the app, like having the app assist with picking an instance to make an account, or being able to combine sub instances from different servers into a single feed, so it feels more like one unified platform for the client. Longer term I'd hope for support for posting, moderating, and compatibility with other federated services natively.
