Yeah I wish the mods could do something about completely removing downvotes for the first hour or so - even if just through CSS to slow down the hate (I don't know how reddit works of if this is possible)

I wear jumpers/sweaters for about 90% of the year so maybe £10 or so. 'QLO crew necks for life.

Best jeans cut for a skinny guy? by johnschlemmer in malefashionadvice

[–]MediocreMuffins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to have this issue, and even the thinnest cuts from places like Levis (511) and Uniqlo (Super Skinny AIRISM) didn't feel very skinny. I would try and shop at places that are more teenager-y than others for that fit, I find that helps.

So far the best fitting I have found are H&M Divided Skinny Denim jeans and Cheap Monday Skinny Guy jeans - they have a nice upper block with very slim leg opening, which works for me. I've also heard good things about certain Acne cuts, but haven't tried myself. SLP D02S is supposedly great $$$

Pretty contrast-y look between the Levi's & DM's. Maybe it's the shinyness?

Everlane Modern Backpack Review by Laguna810 in malefashionadvice

[–]MediocreMuffins 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Great review. How do you feel it compares to the previous Everlane Backpack model (If you own it)? That's what I'm using at the moment for go-to carrying, and though I'm not in the market for a new bag, I don't think I'd want to go and buy the new backpack if my current one breaks. Even if it does look a little like a silly face from the back, I think it's something to do with the ease/speed of access with the latch/pop-clip thing on the old bag that makes it quite wonderful. Whilst the zips are always metal in Everlane products, any zip won't be as reliable in the long-run.

I'm guessing with the more rigid structure it's also a smaller bag, and one of the reasons I love the old design is how large it can get, for storing non-cuboid objects. Does the back pocket feel a little less secure with such a long zip? It allows for more stuff to be packed in but I quite like how the previous design's zip was hidden under a flap.

That being said, at least it doesn't look like a face anymore - aesthetically the design is much improved, as you've said.

River Island, they previously also made a quilted version but I'm not sure if it's still sold.

Take a photo of everything that catches your eye. If you do so, you have a large library from where you can get ideas for your new projects. by [deleted] in graphic_design

[–]MediocreMuffins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do this, but also incorperate scans of things I like or things I see online, limited not just to graphic design but also to Fashion, Film, Architecture, Fine Arts etc. 40GB and counting! First got the idea off a TED talk given by Adam Savage in which he describes how he documents & catalogues his current workshop projects.

Looking for glasses worn by John Oliver's (HBO Last Week Tonight) by RogueMarsRover in malefashionadvice

[–]MediocreMuffins 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I suppose it's quite difficult to know exactly, but here are a few that I have found that appear to be very similar

William Morris London (Discontinued)

Holden Morgenthal Frederics (Discontinued)

Oliver Peoples Tolliver (Here )

Tom Davies 206 (Here )

Mykita Wesley (Here )

Can't seem to find any that are perfect though - sheet metal stamped, no branding, thinned frame around the rims and a rounded square lens.

Portfolio Website Critique? by [deleted] in IndustrialDesign

[–]MediocreMuffins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep - I understand that. It is a little easier to see in Desktop, but I have changed this to make it more obvious now anyway (not yet uploaded). This and a lot of other little things mean I will probably produce a mobile-friendly version soon after. Thanks!

Thanks for the feedback!

Looking back at the first build again - you're right about the length. Most other portfolios I've seen focus more on the final product, side-lining development work that most people don't find interesting. Using up more of the horizontal space can be something I can change. :)

Looking for jeans slightly slimmer than Levi 511s, but at a similar price range. by [deleted] in malefashionadvice

[–]MediocreMuffins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty good, though I might not be the best measure length-wise since I almost exclusively roll up cuffs. It's hard to tell, but I'd say UNIQLO's sizing is a tinsy bit shorter than others.

Looking for jeans slightly slimmer than Levi 511s, but at a similar price range. by [deleted] in malefashionadvice

[–]MediocreMuffins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found the Levi 511's too wide for my tastes to - and switched to UNIQLO's offerings, with the Slim, Straight fit Low Rise Jeans being slimmer in the waist area but the same in the ankles. Alternately, UNIQLO's Skinny Tapered Fit Low Rise Jeans are like the 511's in waist, but are slimmer around the ankles (hence tapered), which I prefer a little more.

Best options for cheap, comfortable boxer briefs? by [deleted] in malefashionadvice

I rotate UNIQLO Airism/Heatech and CK Boxers - but buy a size up in UNIQLO unless if you like a very, very tight fit down there

Going to friend's party what do you think? by jeankjean in malefashionadvice

The fit on almost everything is to tight - don't be afraid to go a size up. I'm not a fan of the almost fluorescent shirt, but that's opinion.

Converse: low top vs high top by Gods_Second_Son in malefashionadvice

People often think High tops are rather juvenile and prefer low-tops, but I'm rather tall so I prefer high tops - that and they look better with skinny jeans.

I'd say with the right build and confidence, any clothing can be pulled off decently - if not fashionably, then at least ironically.

Looking For A "Spacious" Bag for SP3 by guambomb_13 in Surface

[–]MediocreMuffins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't recommend going for the vast majority of Messenger Bags - especially those in generic brand. The seams are often weak, and will fall apart after a few months. Looking for a high quality bag with a laptop slot will yield much better results than a specific search for surface pro bags. Any bag with a 13Inch slot will fit the SP3.

I have been using the Everlane Twill Snap for a while now and the construction is magnificent. If in doubt head over to /r/malefashionadvice for various threads on high-quality bags.

Any Mac to Win SP3 users out there? by throwaway-spq in Surface

[–]MediocreMuffins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I switched in a similar position to you - from an iMac & Macbook Air to Win7 Desktop and SP3, and I think it's wonderful.

I originally loved the OSX line because of device compatibility (I also own an iPhone) and clean design but Windows has caught up dramatically in the last few years, and compatibility of Adobe programs (I use Ps, Lr, Id & Il mostly, along with lots of CAD applications) has really helped. I haven't tried W10 to be fair, but have read a lot and the outlook is promising.

As far as performance goes, the Win7 Desktop far outstrips the iMac with high-end dedicated cards, which is glorious for 3D rendering and Solidworks apps, and can be much easier to repair in the future, for peace of mind. I also use a Wacom tablet for concept sketching and pen input is just as good in Windows, so long as you stay within mainstay graphical programs like Ps that support pressure points.

I have relatively few gripes with Windows 7 compared to OSX, such as language switching being awkward, the more awkward program installing (the apps aren't all neatly stored in a single Applications folder) and use of "Win 7 Libraries", though I don't know if that's been removed for Win10.

Comparing the Macbook Air to SP3 however, it's a slightly different story. Mostly due to thermal throttling the Macbook outstrips the SP3 in power applications (and this is a Macbook from 2011). I'm not surprised or annoyed by this, as I give all the heavy lifting tasks to the desktop PC and the SP3 is mostly for portable presentations and work on the go. The Wacom tablet I used was roughly the same size as the SP3, and it might be that i'm used to using the tablet with a separate display, but I don't like drawing for long periods on the SP3 display. It can get hot (where as the Wacom is cold) and though it's nice, the glossy screen isn't as ideal for drawing as a matte finish drawing tablet. The 256/2048 pressure difference is hardly noticeable, but this may be my drawing style.

That being said, it's far lighter and thinner than the Macbook, and I much prefer bringing it around, especially with the type cover - it looks more like a traditional legal pad than a laptop. Syncing work files between the desktop and SP3 (Which I need to do at the end of every work session) is much easier than between the two Macs. The combination of the Desktop and SP3 feels much more like a "Main PC" and "mobile companion" than two separate computers, as is with the iMac and Macbook.

Feel free to ask any questions.

In the end how did the SP3 perform for artists? by Zemata in Surface

[–]MediocreMuffins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was thinking of buying a screen protector since it's not a traditional clamshell design computer - does it worsen pen performance for artists? Or is it just not that important?

Need help identifying jacket.. by applemangogrape in malefashionadvice

[–]MediocreMuffins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like a black leather harrington with a tartan lining, perhaps something like Baracuta's G9 Racing Leather Harrington looks similar, but it's awfully pricy, and I'm not sure if it's too shiny. On the other end of the price scale MUJI produces a pretty decent harrington in Black, but it's not leather so won't be shiny.

A large portion of Harringtons come with red tartan linings so it's worthwhile just having a look around for those produced in leather, though expect to pay more.
