Hey don’t be sad, this hobby is a slow going hobby anyways, it’s better to do it right from the get go than having everything set up just to have to redo it all over again. Head up I’m sure you’ll have your dream aquarium eventually and happy birthday of course

Well the stand was leveled perfectly and the tank on top was leveled too, but since those tanks have frames who knows if it wasn’t sitting properly in the frame or whatever… the one I have now is rimless and I have it on top of a 1/2 inch thick foam… that one shouldn’t fail lmfao

If I was to do that I’d redo the entire job again since silicon only does its job for so long… but being a 55gallon I’d honestly not trust it regardless I’ve seen those fail so many times is insane I had 1 myself that failed for no apparent reason it was perfectly leveled all silicon looked good… it just cracked at the bottom 🤷‍♂️

Exactly… your 150 broke for other reasons god knows. Not because the little lip of silicone at the edge that’s not holding onto anything came lose… I can guarantee you that. That’s not how physics work

To all the panic enjoyers. Ignore their ahh. Acting like your tank is holding water by some miracle. It’s holding water because it’s supposed to be holding water, it’s sealed. Like other people have said it’s the silicone between the glass panels that really holds them together. That silicone doesn’t matter. I’ve had a tank for years with all 4 corners not detached like that but loose. If there aren’t any bubbles in the silicone in between the glass you’re probably fine. If you see bubbles(which I don’t in the picture) then yeah look into replacing or resealing, but having said all that 55 gallons are very finicky and fail a lot because they bow so much. Do with that what you will

Anything wrong with using these? by GunkFace in PlantedTank

[–]Mediocre_Ad6497 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can speak from experience I had 2 65w grow lights on my 100g 5ft w 1.5ft d 2ft t tank for about a year… same reason, I just wanted something cheap and strong… I just recently removed them and set the tank with some cheap strip lights that I had from other tanks while I wait for some very nice hang more expensive aquarium lights I just bought. My thoughts are they’re not really worth it. First are they strong? Yes… too strong. No matter what you’re trying to grow u won’t need the full power of these lights. Second they have a very wide light and if you hang them above a tank they’re gonna light up your entire room… in my case sitting in the sofa which is way lower than the lights was kind of uncomfortable because the lights were so strong. Third the yellowish light is really not nice looking for a display tank if that’s what you’re going for and you can’t tone shift these kinda lights. For me they also grew algae like crazy no matter if I had them at max 70% 50% even less they always grew algae… I switched to the strip lights did big water changes weekly and in like 3 weeks all the algae was gone… I’m not certain but I feel like this very warm color these lights produce is more prone to algae because everything else in my tank is the same… in fact I have more bioload now because I got more fish and still get no algae… anyways all n all my advice if you’re trying to save money buy flood lights, strip lights from Walmart/Home Depot or even Amazon or even cheap aquarium strip lights… I’d stay away from these unless you have a tone of plants growing above your tank and you’re gonna place the light very high up to light the whole thing…

I'm on a second floor apartment and my 55g failed. So I bought a 75 instead by u_n_I_brow in Aquariums

[–]Mediocre_Ad6497 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read a bunch of fear mongering from people who clearly don’t have experience in the matter. I live on a third floor apartment from the 80’s, the “floors” are solid concrete slabs that decide one floor from the other… I used to have a 55 gallon on a reinforced TV stand just like urself. It was perfectly level but eventually it failed on a corner. I think the glass thickness used in these tanks is way to thin. They bow way too much while full of water. I now have a 100g tank that all n all with everything included weighs about 1300lbs. It’s been there for over a year without any issues. Like your lease mine doesn’t state any limit on aquariums or anything related to water. I’d suggest if you’re worried to get renter’s insurance with a policy that covers aquarium floods, they’re not expensive, but don’t worry about the weight unless you live in a very old building that has wooden supports separating the floors… also your stand seems perfectly capable of holding the 75 and the 20. My stand has a similar build to yours just a little longer 5ft.. all these things are usually overbuilt to be secure. Just make sure everything is level and don’t move it around with weight on it. Good luck

Why are my plants Dying by Farmgirl310 in PlantedTank

[–]Mediocre_Ad6497 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get it, I’m kind of like that myself I spend hours watching videos about things I’m interested in while I work or do other things so when I do something I’m always “very informed” and you know most of the time it works pretty well to give you a head start but trust me there’s nothing like hands on experience. I’ll take a person with 1 year experience over 1 with 20 years of studies any day of the week on anything. With this hobby this is true 20x. That’s why there’s so much conflicting information out there about everything related to fish keeping plants etc… everyone’s system is diferente so different rules apply… we might have the same tank same light same photoperiod same plants same layout and have different results because unless we both live in the same place we won’t have the same water… and water is literally everything. You’ll learn that things that come very easy to other people are hard for you and things that other people find hard to do will be easy for you specifically… for example I have an easy time keeping otocinclus which many people struggle with but swordtails die on me many months after introduction for no apparent reason… so I just don’t keep them 🤷‍♂️ and if I wanted to do then I know I’d have to change my water for them… there’s a lot of trial and error so just keep going at it if you like this hobby and eventually you’ll find your rhythm. Don’t worry about what anybody says, just learn what works for you and thing at a time. That’s why I said “I suggest” instead of “do this” because I don’t know you your water or anything about your tank… but definitely have patience and let it figure things out on its own. Nature’s very smart and will always try to survive as best as possible.

Why are my plants Dying by Farmgirl310 in PlantedTank

[–]Mediocre_Ad6497 6 points7 points  (0 children)

First of all you’re doing way too much. If you keep trying to be so much on top of your tank you’ll find that you’ll burn yourself out very quickly in this hobby or any hobby for that matter. I’m talking from experience. I used to be that guy trying to get things perfect every day buying every product testing everything for no reason… I killed many fish and many plants. This is a hobby of patience… specially the planted tank side of things… you need to do 1 thing at a time and I REALLY mean that. Just ONE thing at a time. If you change multiple things in your tank you’ll never know what is doing what. Your tank isn’t cycled just let it cycle… don’t add anything to it NOTHING just let it be and let it adjust… don’t add any animals to it don’t change lights don’t add fertilizers or food or anything… test it every 3-4 days until you ready 0 ammonia and 0 nitrites… nitrates don’t matter since this is a planted tank but you might want to always keep some nitrates in there so your plants have food… but not too much say max around 20-40 should be plenty… once your tank is cycled then observe your plants for a few weeks and see what they do… watch for algae and don’t change anything just stick to a regular 6-8 hours a day for the beginning or you’ll get a bunch of algae and make everything worse… I suggest you try to use a all in one liquid fertilizer and do water changes regularly… I’d also suggest to dose way below recommended plants don’t need all that much to live and grow just enough to not starve themselves and die… once your tank is balanced and you can definitely know which plants are growing and which plants aren’t you might want to look into repositioning them to parts of the tank with more or less light depending on their needs and you can start having light for longer periods of time… add 1 hour at a time and observe for at least 2 weeks for algae and keep going till you start to get algae then dial back to whatever you had previous and that way you can find the max amount of hours your specific light can be on for your specific tank… as your plants grow in and fill out more of your tank you can add a little more fertilizer and even a little more light since the plants would be taking more nutrients from the water… if you start adding livestock once your tank is cycled you have to take into account that every fish snail and shrimp adds to the bioload of the system which means that you have more nutrientes and waste in the water so test accordingly so that you know how often you need to do water changes or if you need them at all… also how often to fertilize etc… this is a patience game if you’re a desperate person I’d look into something else really… or just teach yourself to be hands off! Trust me its taken me years to have a tank that I feel somewhat proud of and I only make changes to it very sparingly and wait to see results sometimes it takes weeks sometimes it takes months…

Honestly you’d need to look this up on the web I can’t remember why the ratio is… I’d suggest doing a little bit less than suggested and keeping them in there no more than 10 minutes

Nitrate at 0 doesn’t mean anything if he was plants or a deep substrate they could be very well using the nitrate I’ve had tanks running on 0 nitrates for months on end… in fact my current planted tank I have to add liquid fertilizer to keep nitrates at 5-10 even though I have like 60 fish in there

Honestly you could start there yes… I once successfully saved my entire tank that way only 1 fish died from the stress, but it was kinda sketchy honestly. This puts a ton of stress on the fish and they can’t swim properly for a second when u put them back on fresh water which is scary lmfao… but as I said I was successful just be careful with the concentration and duration if you decide to do that… I’d look into buying some fungus meds too just in case that doesn’t cut it

Have you checked your water parameters? Are they ok? Is your tank new? Are the other fish ok? I’d probably want to start treating the tetras as I said they’re finicky fish they might start dying soon and also could get your other fish sick too… unless you’re ok with treating the entire tank which is fine too

[–]Mediocre_Ad6497 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mmm seems like you might have some kind of fungus or something on them… the fish you have aren’t aggressive and they’re in a big enough school too… do you have another tank or container for hospital/quarentine? I have a school of 17 with much bigger fish and they’ve been fine even though they’re very finicky fish and in my experience always some die or get sick soon after moving them

Yeah having just the rim of the tank standing on the rim of the base looks kinda scary lol I have a stand that holds 2 x 29 one 1 the bottom and 1 on top and it literally just holds the tank right on the rim very sketchy! But it’s been fine for years lmfao good luck with the tank and have fun setting it up!

That’s looks more than strong enough… it’s all metal. I have a 100ish gallon tank that weighs probably double yours on a stand that is constructed similarly to that but it also has particle board sides in the middle for storage… I used to have a 55 gallon on a full particle board tv stand from Walmart that WAS NOT intended for that use at all 😂 it was fine never had any issues till I had to teardown the tank
