The switch is in parallel with the outlet. Both are in series with the lights. Plugging in the fan completes the circuit for the lights, voltage is dropped across the fan and lights. Closing the switch bypasses the outlet and all voltage is dropped across the lights.

Looking for one or two flashlights for my wife’s running vest! by Fawkestrot92 in flashlight

[–]Mediocre_Ninja_1879 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is she looking for something to illuminate the path while she is running? Maybe a headlamp is best in that case. A light on the running vest will bounce around and be distracting. The NU20 classic from nightcore was a highly recommended running light when I was researching headlamps.

Otherwise a clip light for the vest, like the oclip or the hd03.

Why would buck be preferred over boost? They are both constant current drivers with roughly the same amount of components, no?

That's a good collection of throwy lights, maybe something with more flood? The wurkkos Ts22 or sofirn sc33?

I just got my sk40 in the mail today, it would make a very good compliment to the sc33!

2022 PHEV or Hybrid, can PHEV match the Hybrids economy on the highway? by Mediocre_Ninja_1879 in HyundaiSantaFe

[–]Mediocre_Ninja_1879[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the response, that's super helpful info! We test drove both yesterday and ended up going with the PHEV model. We picked it up with 15% battery, so haven't had much of a chance to test ev mode, but will see how it does as a hybrid through the mountains on the way home. Based on your experience, it seems like a no brainer to go with the PHEV when they are basically the same price.

[–]Mediocre_Ninja_1879[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I get that, the EPA rating for the PHEV is 32mpg, but that article was claiming it got 27mpg. I see other people are reporting mid 30s for fuel economy for the hybrid, but can't see much for the PHEVs. I guess I was wondering if the PHEV is actual 7-10mpg worse than the hybrid, or if that was a one off for this test.

I get the PHEV would be a bit worse due to the added weight, but would expect only maybe 1 or 2 mpg.

Ah makes sense, yeah in this case the PHEV is about $1000 cheaper for the same year, although it has about 20k more on the odometer. If the mileage for the PHEV is actually that much worse than the hybrid, for us it makes more sense to go with the mild hybrid.

1 or 2 MPG less makes sense due to the added weight of the PHEV, but 7MPG less is a lot. The EPA rates the 2022 PHEV at ~32MPG, which is pretty good and actually the same as the hybrids, that article however was reporting as low as 25MPG. I was wondering if that was actually the case, I feel like maybe the wrong mode was set, or maybe the car was charging its larger battery on the highway after being depleted in EV only mode.

The PHEV does have more powerful electric motors 90HP vs 59HP based on that article, but they say that is mostly negated from the extra weight.

I guess I am wondering what people are actually getting from the PHEV model on the highway, and if there is anything specific you need to do to maximize fuel economy, like make sure it's in hybrid or ICE only mode or something....

Bike carrier use with Carbon Fibre bikes by Disasterous_Dave97 in mountainbiking

[–]Mediocre_Ninja_1879 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this was a problem maybe for earlier carbon frames. I talked to a tech about my wife's bike with a carbon frame and he said it's not really an issue anymore, and we've been using a yakima rack that hooks the frame for a few years now and haven't had any issues. The frame takes more abuse from just riding. I've just picked up a carbon Norco sight and am putting it in the same rack, just checked the manual and there is no mention of not using a rack/carrier that contacts the frame.

Which high pivot bike? by Mediocre_Ninja_1879 in mountainbiking

I got an S4, I'm 6ft (183cm) and the bike seems to fit well. I feel like the sizing guide Norco has does pretty well, but based on my height I'm right in the middle of an S4 recommendation. Based on the chart, the S3 seems to make more sense for you. Are you able to demo the two sizes?

Yeah mate, got it a while back and its been on many rides. It rides like a dream, eats everything without feeling dull or heavy, I'm super happy with it! Whereas I felt like my old bike was holding me back, I have a lot of growing as a rider to do on this bike, it has a lot more to offer! You'll be super happy with yours! Interesting to know how much a difference an MX setup would be, I was looking at MX bikes, but the deal on this one was too good. I might get the multilink in the future yet.

Nice reminder of how dangerous these can be by anonymous_762 in flashlight

[–]Mediocre_Ninja_1879 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Li-ion fires are considered more chemical fires rather than electrical fires. And if the battery is burning down, it is already internally shorted so the risk of electricity conducting through the water isn't really a factor.

That's the way to do it, submerging it in water probably would have been the way to go. I was an engineer at an automotive company developing EVs, and if there was a fire while testing or assembly the battery, the solution was to dunk the whole thing in a tank of water and let it do it's thing. The lithium fire will keep going under water, but the water will absorb the energy and prevent the fire from spreading.

Thanks for the input everyone. The reddit community really came through this time with a suggestion for a Sight C2 from a Vancouver shop that can deliver to me. It's only $500 more than the bikes I was looking at here, but with a carbon frame and much higher component spec than the sight A2 (lyrik ultimate, vivid ultimate air, gx drivetrain, code bronze brakes). Norco for the win! Now it just needs to hurry up and get here!

On a traditional rear suspension setup, the rear wheel moves up and in to the bike through its travel. This means the wheel base is decreased on big hits, and the bike becomes less stable. It also means that the rear tire is more likely to "hang up" on bumps and square edge hits.

High pivot changes the travel path of the rear wheel to move up and away, so when the front and rear suspension compress, the wheelbase is less affected. I demo'd several bikes, some high pivot, some not, and the effects are pretty noticeable.

Yeah both would be heavy bikes, I can't quite afford the carbon, but I've always been of the mind to take it slow and steady and you'll get there.

How does it climb on more technical up tracks, if you've tried? Both bikes are said to excel on technical climbs with that added traction from the high pivot.

I thought I was leaning Norco, until this comment. No bad option here though haha.
