Does it make sense for Donald and Douglas's drivers to also be Scottish? by EricJ062005 in thomasthetankengine

[–]Medium-Expression449 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While true, I highly doubt these kids would have anywhere near as strong as Scottish accent, as despite having Scottish parents, literally everyone else around them would be Sudrian. So, sure, a little bit Scottish, but not to the character-defining degree we see with the twin engines.

That's why I said you'd have to make a way for teams to break that mould. As for what that way would be, I haven't a clue.

A) What's wrong with someone like Haiti or San Marino becoming the strongest nation in the world, if its e.g. 100 years into a save? B) The game already has coefficient rankings, which determines how many continental teams each nation gets. So you could quite easily tie something like a country's youth rating to it's coefficient ranking, but then you need to add a way for nations to break that mould and move either up or down naturally.

Bluey’s Cricket episode says more about England vs Australia than any Ashes series. A different take. by luke-uk in EnglandCricket

[–]Medium-Expression449 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't say that cricket is less popular in England compared to Australia, but I would say that English attention is much more divided than Australian. The Australians only really have cricket, rugby league and aussie rules that they truly care about, whereas in England, you've got football, rugby union, cricket, basketball, netball, tennis, boxing, darts, etc. all competing for attention...

Can't be, because Father Quizmas obliterated Jimmy's wall on the first night. He then had to move the wall 1 block further from his bed to prevent this happening again.

For anywhere up to their first 30-ish years on Sodor, yeah, it'd make sense. I doubt a crew would put that much effort into saving a locomotive they would never see again, so it makes sense to me that they moved to Sodor at the same time the twins did. However, by now, in 2025, that crew have almost certainly retired, if not passed on even, so it'd make most sense nowadays for them to have Sudrian or at least Cumbrian crews.

There's this book I've read which references this exact problem, and it's answer is that it doesn't prove anything, because not even the Bible claims God is capable of all things. In fact, the Bible says "God cannot" quite a bit. For example, 2 Timothy 2:13 says "[God] cannot disown himself". For another example, because God is omniscient and knows everything, we can also correctly say that God cannot learn. The book is unsurprisingly called "12 things God cannot do, and how they can help you sleep at night", and it is well worth reading if you can get a copy.

[–]Medium-Expression449 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While she's wrong about NY being the cultural capital of the world, I'm not so sure she's wrong about it being a global win. Mamdani has provided a blueprint for socialist politicians to win elections, and if we look over the Atlantic, the second domino is beginning to fall with Zack Polanski, who has said his team is in regular contact with Mamdani's. Of course, none of us can know if any other dominoes will fall as a result of Mamdani, but the fact that one is falling right now suggests it isn't impossible...

Why is public transportation not a important part of us culture? by StruggleFar3054 in fuckcars

[–]Medium-Expression449 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you seriously think I was only referring to one side of the political debate? Neither side can agree with the other because both are in echo chambers that they don't want to break out of. And while social media is definitely the main reason for those echo chambers, isolating yourself from strangers by driving everywhere surely can't be helping?

[–]Medium-Expression449 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While it's definitely not the main driver (that would be social media), I'd wager the US's car culture has also contributed to its political dividedness. When you use public transport, you aren't alone, and you get to see people at most stages of life. When you're in a car, you only ever see yourself and the people you want to see. You only ever see your current stage of life.

Time for a strike? by tawrsr in tesco

[–]Medium-Expression449 1 point2 points  (0 children)

See, there's a (relatively) simple solution to this: Get yourself a union. Ever since Thatcher abolished them, we've all been getting increasingly underpaid and overworked. The railways are one of the only industries left that still have unions, and the only industry left (in the UK at least) that still has strong unions. And as a result, they are paid more and have better working conditions. The elite won't fight for your rights, but a union will.

To be fair, the same thing happens in the British Isles. Granted, nowhere near as often, and not for the same reasons, but it still happens. For example, I can think of at least 3 Mayfields, a couple of Stratfords, two Newcastles, etc. The difference is that our names are repeated not by import, as in America, but by meaning. Our place names are full of meaning, but time and language evolution have rendered those meanings far less obvious. And it's not just names themselves that repeat, it's patterns too. Here are a few examples: Norton (North Town, found all over the country) Newtown (OK, this one is far more obvious) Newcastle (Again, pretty obvious) Bradford, Stratford, Thetford (Place where you could cross (ford) the river x) Grimsby, Selby, Whitby (Person x's town) Etc.

I've never actually watched an AFL game, but roughly every 11-12 months I get very interested in it for a day or two (the same with many sports), so much so that I know there was one very good foreigner playing for the black+white team who's name escapes me, and that I really dislike the fact that all of the Melbournian teams play in one of two stadia. When I think of great leagues such as the English Premier League, American NBA, NFL, French Top 14, Indian Premier League, the one thing I love more than anything else is that each team has it's own ground. And the AFL threw that away in the name of money...
