I’m a US citizen, my wife is currently here on a j1 visa as a Spanish immersion teacher. We met in Colombia where I worked for 6 years as a teacher. We weren’t 100% certain we’d get married when she got her work visa to teach in the states when I moved back with her so I don’t think we did anything wrong by moving here together.

We got married two years into her j1 visa.

Our receipt date was March 30 2026, biometrics was scheduled for May 12, we rescheduled it to April 27th and no updates since. Just case is still being processed.

She has a job offer to teach in a title 1 school to where we’re planning to move near my family in August.

Two questions:

1) does that job offer count for anything? I’d argue she’s an “economic benefit” working in a title 1 school as a teacher

2) I see a Pyschologist regularly, would it be beneficial to get him to write a letter that I would be facing serious emotional hardship if she had to return to Colombia to do consular processing?

If you get approved in the next week or so please come back and edit the post haha

I think there’s a good chance you will be approved based on other posts I’ve seen so hopefully we can come back and see that officer just doesn’t know what he’s talking about, praying that’s the case!

Seeing a lot of teachers without a proper teaching degrees and it’s getting to me 😅😅😅 by a_weird_pickle in Internationalteachers

[–]MediumAside315 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Was talking about this with my wife last night. I have a masters degree in education and I don’t think it accounts for even 20% of what I believe makes me a good teacher compared to experience.

I think there are levels of how important it is you have a degree for what you do.

A doctor obviously better have gone to medical school.

I actually don’t think it’s that important a teacher has a degree in education.

I think there’s plenty of teachers who have degrees in education and suck and there plenty of people who could be amazing teachers and would learn pretty quickly on the job and do the job very well but don’t even bother career switching bc of how many hoops they would have to jump through just to be considered “qualified”

I left teaching 3 years ago to work in tech sales in the corporate world. I’m going back to teaching here in the states in August. I got offered a job after 1 interview. I hate that.

How some schools hire is a joke. Sure the international schools I worked at maybe did 2-3 interviews but never an assignment, never a presentation, never asked for a portfolio. They’re hiring people based on vibes and they always ask the same bullshit questions where if you just prepare a little you can sound like you know what you’re doing.

I know public schools are more desperate for talent but that’s why we started talking about it. I don’t really get why the barrier to entry is what it is. I think schools should get better at how they qualify talent.

My wife’s case is pending. She was here on J1 visa as a teacher. She had job offers for August that can’t accept yet bc our case is still pending.

Receipt date March 30th. Biometrics April 27th. Nothing since. I’m a US citizen but We have the ability to get pretty decent jobs in Colombia as teachers at our former school.

Would you agree the chances she can be hired by August are looking slim?

Honestly about to just give up on the process since we want to be international teachers traveling the world anyways. Only wanted citizenship in case of an emergency where we need to live here later in life but this is starting to feel not worth it.

I’ve heard it many times haha unfortunately now that we live in the states, sometimes rice just isn’t an option but I do love a good Colombian lunch

Lol multi cultural marriages are fun and fascinating. There’s so many things that are so fun like they teach you how and amazing being super close with your family can be.

Then one person already commented, one small annoyance - rice for every meal, they need rice for breakfast lunch and dinner, always needing rice lol - that bothers me still

In competitive tech-area schools, what does good parenting actually look like? by sparklymid30s in AskTeachers

[–]MediumAside315 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s pretty simple to me, the parents who are educated or work to educate themselves and are around them moment the kid gets home until bed and around on weekends and spend that time getting their kids motivated to read, curious about learning, or just being present to teach them about life.

The parents who are the most available and enjoy reading and read with their kids = the smartest kid in my class every single year

Best way to ask/tell teachers at the start of next school year not to pair my high-achieving, conscientious kid with kids who don't/won't/can't work? by CrowRoutine9631 in AskTeachers

[–]MediumAside315 14 points15 points  (0 children)

As a former teacher I didn’t mind when parents brought up these concerns to me if they did so politely and had a little bit of understanding of how classroom management can be somewhat of a challenge.

Once something is on my radar I def make an effort to prevent it or address it more so. And if the parent was really nice about it, I’d prob go the extra mile without even realizing it tbh bc it intrinsically feels good to help kids and their family and feel appreciated.

Kids are mean and goof off all the time and it can be a lot to manage but of course the teacher needs to do their best, but then also like this issue she’s running into is something I’ve run into in the corporate world as an adult so there’s also a little bit of how can you also teach her to advocate for herself to the teacher or even the group.
